(Intercosmic Kinship Conversations) Symbols and Subconscious with Claire Dorey by Alison Newvine

After a summer break, I’m happy to bring to you the fourth installment in the Intercosmic Kinship Conversation series, a spinoff of the anthology Celebrating Intercosmic Kinship of Goddess (CIKG). This interview is with Claire Dorey, an artist, writer, curator, Reiki master and cold water swimmer with an interest in feminist history, Goddess, and feminist spirituality. She studied feminist textiles and fine art at university and began exploring and writing about Goddess culture during the pandemic. (Available at Mago Bookstore) Her piece in CIKG, is titled, Chalking the Eyes in Search of She Who Spins, analyzes the possibilities and maybes of the origin of certain Pictish symbols, and how they relate to the divine cosmic female. In her piece, she cross references these symbols with sky maps, cosmic motion, sacred geometry and symbolism in other cultures and various mythologies, where similarities arise. Her piece also includes original artwork that illustrate these concepts and understandings. We begin by talking briefly about Claire’s education and feminist art influences. Then Claire defines for us the terms in the title of her piece “She Who Spins,” and “Chalking the Eyes.” We explore her unique artistic process and look at some of her artwork before diving into a subject matter close to both of our hearts — the underworld. We talk about the underworld as both a place and a state and explore how this connects to grief, the topic of an anthology Claire recently co-edited with Trista Hendren and Pat Daly. This anthology, Wounded Feminine: Grieving with Goddess was released this summer by Girl God Books. Claire and I also discuss the upcoming event S/HE Divine Studies Forum being held online on September 7th. This event highlights some of the pieces in the “Wounded Feminine” anthology and centers around the theme, “Mourn the Blockage of Matriversal Blessing.” This event is a coming together of two worldwide Goddess communities, Mago and Girl God Books. Claire is organizing this event along with Helen Hye-Sook Hwang and Trista Hendren. Claire also gives goes in depth on one of the pictish symbols that inspired both her artwork and her piece in CIKG. Claire has an astounding intuitive, associative mind and can feel into the unseen and translate what she sees through art and word. Her multimedia creations are are journey through symbol and psyche. (Essay) Woman the Gatherer by Moses Seenarine

[Excerpt from Cyborgs Versus the Earth Goddess: Men’s Domestication of Women and Animals and Female Resistance by Moses Seenarine.] Woman-the-Gatherer Throughout the course of prehistory, women and children constituted 75 percent of the population, on average. The over-emphasizing of activities conducted by 25 percent of community members, sperm-producers, creates a fictitious view of ancient societies and neglects egg-producers’ contribution to human evolution. There are few studies on Paleolithic females, or on hominin feminist theory. This academic oversight is remarkable given the fact that the young-bearing sex are the creators of life in the species. Female hominins exercised enormous power in sex selection, and under gynocentric socialization, they would have been the primary determinants of our evolution. The production by hominin egg-producers in food provision and gathering of plant foods have garnered far less attention than they deserve. Edible plants, eggs, and shellfish often makeup 80 percent of the contemporary gatherer-‘hunter’ diet. In Woman the Gatherer, Frances Dahlberg discusses the roles and activities of women in prehistoric groups and among four contemporary gatherer-‘hunter’ communities. She found that gathering was used as the principal form of food security. Egg-producing hominins were the keepers of a vast botanical knowledge, and they used it to help their families and communities survive and thrive. Foraging and botanical knowledge may have led to the development of memory, communication, language, and a bigger brain. sapiens females observed other animals burying food in the ground to preserve it for winter, and they imitated this behavior by hiding roots and tubers in holes dug in the ground. During winter, they stored an assortment of tubers, wild carrots, onions, seeds, nuts, herbs, grains, vegetables, and other plant-based foods in caves, root cellars, and other places relatively safe from insects and other animals. The young-bearing sex were far from sedentary homemakers waiting for men to show up with rapidly decomposing animal carcass. Egg-producers were the primary providers for hominins’ plant-based diet. Mothers were actively moving around the environment, gathering food, and carrying infants while doing so. Woman-the-gatherer may have traveled for millennia along established routes to gather wild plants in well-scheduled assemblies. Successful gathering required skills of discrimination, evaluation, and memory. The range of seeds, nuts, shells, and grasses discovered at primeval sites indicate careful and knowledgeable selection rather than random gleaning. While traveling and foraging, woman-the-gatherer had to protect herself and children, and her sharpened digging-stick was a primary weapon. A hominin child’s survival depended upon its mother’s ability to carry it great distances for several years, her skill in finding and gathering food, using tools, her ability to space infants, to feed her weaned offspring, and to maintain social ties with the clan or community. Child-centered, egalitarian groups allowed for cooperative breeding and equal distribution of resources to ensure a stable food supply and avoid famine. In addition to gathering, females were doing a lot of plant based processing in the Stone Age. Vegetable foods were usually available to hominids and were exploited easily with simple tools. Women used seeds, nuts, and grains to make cakes, breads and other portable and preserved edibles that would keep during travel over long distances. And, they used fire to bake and cook hard plant-based foods like roots and tubers. Paleo Carb Diet Chimpanzees are close to H. sapiens sapiens genetically, sharing more than 96 percent of their DNA code with humans, and their digestive tract is functionally very similar to that of humans. Pans are primarily frugivores. Their actual diet in nature is just about 95 percent plant-based, with the remaining 5 percent filled with insects, eggs, and baby animals. Given the similarity to Pans, what then did hominins eat, and which sex was more responsible for meeting their nutritional needs? The Stone Age diet was primarily plant-based. Earlier hominins ate a diet of mostly raw, fiber-rich plants, grains, and legumes, and not that much flesh, for millennia. As part of the Paleolithic diet, carbohydrate tubers, the underground storage organs of plants, may have been eaten in high amounts by pre-agricultural humans. The Stone Age diet may have included as much as 3.6 to 4.1 pounds (1.65 to 1.9 kg) of fruit and vegetables per day. During the Early Stone Age, tubers, seeds, fruits, nuts and other starchy foods were readily available and contributed to the evolution of humans’ oversized brains. Cooked starch, a source of preformed glucose, substantially enhanced energy availability to human tissues with high glucose demands, such as the brain, red blood cells, and the developing fetus. Since the human brain uses as much as 25 percent of the body’s energy and up to 60 percent of blood glucose, it probably could not have grown so massive on a low-carbohydrate diet. Also, pregnancy and lactation require more glucose, and low maternal blood glucose compromises the health of females and their fetus. Plus, analysis of European DNA show they had extra copies of amylase genes to break down starchy foods, long before the intensive cultivation of plants. Lactase persistence emerged only 7,500 years ago, which proves that prior to animal colonization, H. sapiens were not regularly consuming the milk of other-than-human animals. Maybe hominin ovary beings were making plant-based milks instead. Archaeologists found stone tools with thousands of wild grain residues on them in Mozambique, dated to 105,000 BP. The grains were highly processed, either boiled, fermented, or ground. This plant-based evidence shows that female foraging groups in the Middle Stone Age routinely brought starchy plants to their cave sites. Most of the grain was sorghum, an ancestor of modern sorghum used in porridge, bread, and beer. Possibly, Paleolithic egg-producers grounded and processed grains and nuts into milk shakes and smoothies. Other plant-based foods were found, such as the African ‘potato,’ false banana, wine palm trunk, and seed from a woody tree. By the Late Stone Age, the processing of wild cereals was routine and women invented efficient methods for cooking ground seeds. (Essay 1) The Two Marys of Chartres by Anne Baring

[Author’s Note: This essay in four parts is my webinar talk given to the Ubiquity University online Chartres Community Meeting ‘Madonna Rising’ August 14th, 2020] Chartres – La Belle Verrière, Photo by Anne Baring The Virgin Mary Part 1 Apart from Christmas and Easter, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15th is the most important day of the year for Catholics and Orthodox Christians all over the world. In the town of Chartres, in France, the Black Madonna is taken from the Cathedral and carried through the streets, accompanied by the people of the town, in an intensely moving and timeless ritual. Exactly the same attitude of reverence and adoration would have accompanied the processions sacred to the Great Goddesses of the ancient world. There are two Mary’s who are at the heart of Chartres Cathedral: The Virgin Mary and her daughter-in-law Mary Magdalene. Both are connected with the Black Madonna in the crypt. I have come to the conclusion that the image of the Black Madonna represents Mary Magdalene and the Wisdom Tradition that she brought with her from Palestine to France, or Gaul as it was called in the first century CE. The Wisdom Tradition enshrines the lost Feminine aspect of God, named Shekinah, Sophia, Divine Wisdom and the Holy Spirit. The Virgin Mary is the unrecognized Great Goddess of the Christian tradition. In our chapter on the Virgin Mary in The Myth of the Goddess, Jules Cashford and I showed how she appears as a new Christian incarnation of the Great Goddess of ancient civilizations. In icon, painting and sculpture, she is portrayed as the Great Mother, Queen of Heaven, Earth and Underworld, Goddess of the Animals and Goddess of the Wisdom of the Soul. In the exquisite blue of this window in Chartres Cathedral – La Belle Verrière – a blue that has never been reproduced, we see the image of the Virgin Mary, seated on the Throne of Wisdom, holding her son on her lap. The words addressed to her as Queen of Heaven speak to us of her exalted being: Hail! Queen of Heaven, Hail! Lady of the angels. Salutation to Thee, root and portal, Whence the Light of the world has arisen. These words echo the similar greeting addressed four thousand years ago to the Sumerian Goddess Inanna and the Egyptian Goddess Isis as Queen of Heaven — Hail! Great Lady of Heaven. Hail! Light of the world![1] Those who know only the Christian tradition do not know how deep the roots of Mary go and how the salutations and prayers to her echo the salutations and prayers offered to these Great Goddesses, both of whom were addressed as the Light of the World. Mary is addressed as ‘Star of the Sea’ and, like these ancient Goddesses, is associated with the morning star Venus and with the moon, whose crescent is often shown beneath her feet. And the image of the dove always accompanies her as it once accompanied the Great Goddesses and the Holy Spirit. Hence, when we hear the words spoken at the baptism of Jesus, accompanied by a dove: ‘This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased’, we can know, as the Jewish Christians did, that the Divine Mother, the Holy Spirit, is speaking to Her son.[2] Baptism of Christ by Andrea del Verrocchio Once she has given birth to Jesus, the Virgin Mary does not play a prominent role in the Gospels, other than her presence at the wedding in Cana and the crucifixion. Yet within 500 years of her death, she has mysteriously assumed the presence and stature of all the Great Goddesses before her. In this role, like earlier Great Goddesses, Mary is both virgin and mother. She gives birth to a half-human, half divine son who, as in earlier incarnations of the dying and resurrected god, dies and is reborn. Like Osiris, Attis, Tammuz, Dumuzi and Persephone before him, Jesus descends into the underworld, where the mystery of regeneration has always taken place. And his ascent and resurrection or return, like theirs, is understood to renew life and to redeem it from the limitation of mortality and time. Behind the mythic figure of her son, is the shadowy form of Mary as the new carrier of the Divine Feminine who presides over the mystery of death and regeneration.[3] In 431, at a Council in Ephesus, the city where the great temple of the Goddess Artemis had stood for centuries, Mary was proclaimed not only Christ-bearer but God-Bearer or Mother of God — Theotokos. In giving her this title, she was implicitly, though not yet doctrinally, recognized as the feminine counterpart of the Divine Father. Twenty years later, in 451, at a Council in Chalcedon, Mary was declared Aeiparthenos — ‘Ever-Virgin’, that is a virgin before, during and after the birth of Jesus. There are four dogmas of the Catholic church that have elevated Mary to the position of Divine Mother and Goddess: Her Immaculate Conception, her Perpetual Virginity, her being declared the Mother of God, and her Assumption. The extraordinary story of the doctrinal elevation of Mary to the position of the former Great Goddess as Queen of Heaven shows the persistence of an archetype and the profound need of people to have the feminine principle at the heart of their religion. Because of everything that the figure of the Virgin Mary embraces, the whole past mythology of the Divine Feminine as the womb of life, as cosmic soul and as all that we call nature, the Assumption of Mary has crucial archetypal meaning. In this celebrated event, the feminine dimension of the Divine held in the person of Mary is raised to parity and union with the godhead. In Christ’s welcoming gesture, the tragic Christian tendency to dissociate nature, matter and the body from divine spirit, is dramatically and finally redeemed in a glorious affirmation of their sacredness, unity and divinity. (Essay 3) I Must Call Her Awe/stralia By Leslene della-Madre

After a welcoming stay with Glenys, and being able to visit sacred places in the Blue Mountains with her like “The Three Sisters” in what I saw as Awe/stralia’s version of the Grand Canyon, I traveled on to Brisbane to Susan’s lovely home in the bush. The birds, landscape and lushness all nourished my soul! The fact that Awe/stralia’s population is only 22 million people invites one into a spacious, grounded and heart-warming experience of the land. I felt this everywhere I went. I went barefoot as often as I could. (In fact, when I first arrived at Jane’s in the beginning of my adventure, I immediately removed my shoes and grounded into the earth. I believe it is this practice of “Earthing” that kept me from being jet-lagged. I never experienced it after a fifteen-hour plane trip and travel from the past to the future through a time change. Nor did I experience it upon my return.) I spent another lovely time gathering with kindred sisters in the Friday night talk and workshop. The workshop was particularly a-mazing because a beautiful Sri Lankan woman, a cancer survivor, brought the ashes of her recently deceased sister who also suffered from cancer and placed her ashes on our altar. It was one of those things that could not have been put in a schedule. It was the first time she had brought out her sister’s ashes in the presence of others beyond her family, blessing all of us with her sacred presence. With her ashes on our altar we had twelve women in physical form and one in spirit — a perfect circle of thirteen. We opened our circle sharing a grieving process with her that I felt was held by the ancestors. We bonded immediately in sacred sisterhood — as the circle of women acting as shaman. This particular workshop allowed some women, who had been unsure about coming due to feeling not quite ready because of recent transitions of loved ones in their lives, to feel held by the collective of women and to be witnessed in safe loving space. This is the tribal way of women I feel we are all longing for. Women just know how to love each other. And allow what needs to emerge in the moment. This is the experience that I like to honor as being dreamed together where any agendas of doing are surrendered.

Photo by Sara Wright People can’t make NOISE in rain Machines seize up and rust Screaming Motorcycles sit silenced Chainsaws sputter Weedwhackers clog Lawnmowers spit Power boats gasp Hunters stay home Gray sky blesses Emerald Green wind battered leaves sigh soaking in Cloistered Air Breathing deep Body vibrates in Peace soothed by the songs of Rain whose crystal drops are gifts for roots and frogs abandoned unloved trees underground mycelial networks Animals sigh with relief Haunted Souls return – If only briefly Rain nourishes the Earth. Is this why people hate rain? I wrote this poem this morning when it became obvious that a second quiet day was a probability because of steady rain and cold temperatures in the forties. In June ( I was wrong – one crazed person shot round after round – the rage is palpable – more gunshot violence down the road). Every day the noise is overpowering – motorcycles, guns, fireworks, fast cars and trucks spewing filth, roaring boats going nowhere, whining lawnmowers and other gardening accoutrements to keep those perfect lawns intact… Noise vibrates through my body enervating and buzzing me at the same time, an impossible combination. Mind feels fury. Body feels hopeless. There is no escape from noise pollution except by torrential rain or mountains of snow. Virtually no one complains. Even Refuge, a place I go to lessen the harsh cacophony has neighbors… I keep a bed in my car so that we can leave at a moments notice even there. I live in a Culture that worships Violence. Violence permeates the air like a fiery serpent ready to strike, again and again. My nervous system is attached to the Earth – we are One Being – She suffers, and Her suffering is mine. Last weekend someone exploded a bomb in the field below me – Turkeys screamed in terror. But S/he is biting back. ____________________________________ “As our physical and cultural landscapes transform around us what memories are held by water – what re -surfaces to haunt us, to guide us? There is a space between water and memory.” (my bold face) Emergence Is this another reason people dislike rain? Do some fall into the crack against their will? Do unwanted emotions flow to the surface, dark inner emotions that are normally buried by the fury of a Brutal Summer Sun? (More murders occur in the summer than at any other time of year. Heat apparently conjures up more Hatred). It’s an interesting question. I am in touch with my feelings. Like it or not. Today, I feel the leaves on the trees recovering from yesterday’s trauma when they were beaten down by hail and high winds. Amazingly, all wildflowers survived unscathed, even the lupine spires. Today’s soaking rain nourishes all living beings, and I lean into the songs of flowing water as my body rests. Two days of rain – the first so fierce it tore new leaves from their branches, toppled trees ripping roots from the ground as they fell. (Oh how the noise makers raged when their trees toppled, docks and moorings escaped)! Tons of topsoil were swept to the sea, thanks to the logging machine who has no use for protecting the water from raping the soil (as well as the trees). The second day dawned as a blessing. Quiet rain all day. Not enough to keep the birds from visiting the feeder. The cardinals were feeding each other. Woodpeckers, titmice, chickadees and golden finches flitted back and forth under a canopy of new leaves. All trees are recovering, their leaves open to the sky perhaps in prayers of supplication, while soaking in, soaking in the precious nutrients that will allow them to survive at least in protected places. Like here. For now. The WildFlower Moon passed by last night. Perhaps she brought mercy to those who needed her most, the fragile ephemerals. My animals and me. I used to love the moon but in the last few years I have come to fear her fullness for she now brings frightening extreme weather shifts in her wake. The dark side of moon is showing her revengeful face on a regular basis. This month was no exception. These days my moon ceremony consists of prayers to the Four Directions and a simple water blessing. This month I was grateful for water that I scooped out of overflowing rain barrels. Water that keeps the tadpoles happy. A blessing for the house, the Earth, myself, and my beloved animals. Bowing to the Goddess in Green. Thanksgiving. (Dual-language essay 1 English) “Planetary Consciousness” – What is that? Obituary for Rosalie Bertell by Claudia von Werlhof

Rosalie Bertell is dead. She passed away peacefully on June 14th of 2012 at the age of 83. After having suffered from cancer she closed her eyes forever at the convent of the “Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart” in Pennsylvania which she had been a part of for most of her life. She had been able to experience the publication of her book in German half a year earlier. This causes me great happiness, since I am aware of the relevance of this event for Rosalie. It was very important to her. I maintained ongoing contact with Rosalie for as long as it was possible to do so. One of our last topics of discussion was the Fukushima disaster and the events surrounding it, which appeared more than strange to her as well. According to her calculations the earthquake had not taken place in the potentially sensitive tectonic rift of the Pacific Ocean, as generally presumed. Rather, she traced its origins to a region that was neutral in this context. She was very worried about the long term effects caused by this disaster, after all, this was her area of expertise for which she was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 1986 (Bertell 1986). However she had not been able to grasp the tremendous effects of the Fukushima disaster anymore (cf. www.pbme-online.org, 6th Information-Letter: Fukushima and We, June 2012). Another topic that she had been observing very carefully and a question she had been unable to find an answer to during her lifetime was that of the phenomenon of the melting of parts of the Antarctic region. She assumed that the reasons could not be the same as those that she had pinpointed through her research on the rapid melting of the ice in the Arctic region, namely the employment of electromagnetic ELF waves by the Soviets and the Americans since the mid 70ies, as she describes in her book. One thing was certain to her: it is not just CO2 that is responsible for climate warming, as pretended for the Arctic region. This belief has been promoted by political and economic interests in the United States, and throughout the world since Al Gore’s presidential candidacy– and since then even alternative and ecological movements believe in it. CO2 accumulates in the earth’s troposphere while the warming actually takes place in the higher layers of the ionosphere. And this is precisely the layer that military experiments target utilizing electromagnetic waves to heat it up and creating the potential for natural disasters, as we have come to know decades ago already (s. attempt by the UN to prohibit military application of these technologies through the ENMOD convention of 1977). Maybe, in the case of the Antarctic region, the reason does not lie above, in the artificial warming of the air, but rather below, namely in the warming or any other changes of the water in the oceans? This was where our discourse ended; it was the beginning of June 2012. What would she have thought about all the other disasters that have occurred since? Large earthquakes throughout the planet, storms like “Sandy” which hit the US east coast just in time for the presidential election, and volcanic eruptions like the one in New Zealand last November. How would she have applied her knowledge in order to differentiate between true and fake natural disasters? For if there is one thing we have gained clarity on since the writing of her second book Planet Earth. The Latest Weapon of War, it is that today nobody can just assume natural origins behind the accumulation of enormous natural disasters anymore…
(Book Review) Marguerite Mary Rigoglioso’s The Secret Life of Mother Mary: Divine Feminine Power For Personal Healing and Planetary Awakening by Mary Saracino

The Secret Life of Mother Mary: Divine Feminine Power For Personal Healing and Planetary Awakening, Marguerite Mary Rigoglioso, PhD (Bear & Company, July 2024); https://www.innertraditions.com/books/the-secret-life-of-mother-mary Reviewed by Mary Saracino Marguerite Rigoglioso’s most recent book, The Secret Life of Mother Mary: Divine Feminine Power For Personal Healing and Planetary Awakening, is not the Catholic version of the Blessed Virgin Mother that most people are familiar with. She is definitely not the Blessed Virgin Mary I knew of growing up Catholic in the 1950s and 1960s. Rigoglioso’s depiction of Mary is noncanonical, subversive (in a positive way), and decidedly anything but the submissive, passive patriarchal receptacle promoted in Christian theology. Rigoglioso contends that Mary was an active player in the conception, birthing, and rearing of Jesus. She was also his mentor, teaching him all he knew about ministering to people, performing miracles, etc. And after his death, she played a primary and active role with the apostles. Rigoglioso is the world’s foremost authority on the history of virgin birth and has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in the United States and United Kingdom. The founding director of Seven Sisters Mystery School, she is the author of several books, including The Mystery Tradition of Miraculous Conception: Mary and the Lineage of Virgin Births (Bear & Company, 2021), Virgin Mother Goddesses of Antiquity (Palgrave MacMillian, 2010) The Cult of Divine Birth in Ancient Greece (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009), and her PhD dissertation, Bearing the Holy Ones: A Study of the Cult of Divine Birth in Ancient Greece (California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco, 2007). In The Secret Life of Mother Mary, this revelatory understanding of Mary is presented in seven chapters: Why Mother Mary Is Worth Rediscovering, Mary’s Remothering of Me, Mary as a Conscious Priestess of Divine Birth, The Power of Mary’s Holy Womb Chakra—and Yours, Mary as Healer, Mentor, and Women’s Champion, Mary’s Full Ascension to Divinity, and Mary’s Connection to the Subtle Angelics of Nature. Rigoglioso’s book is steeped in extensive cross-cultural, multidisciplinary research (citing, among others, Sri Kaleshwar, Cindy Lindsay, Ally Kateusz, Maximus, and Rudolph Steiner). The book is also rooted in the author’s deep spiritual practice and her psychic/channeling abilities. She brings to light earlier versions of the Gospels that are not part of the Catholic Canon, including the Gospel of Bartholomew, the Gospel of Philip, the Infancy Gospel of James/Birth of Mary, the Gospel of Mary [Magdalene], and the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew. Rigoglioso writes: “What we learn in all of these lesser-known sacred texts about Mary, then, is that she was a tremendously influential, tremendously spiritually adept, and tremendously powerful holy woman” (p. 79). In The Secret Life of Mother Mary, Rigoglioso notes that Mary: “… is hardly the passive girl who allowed the Divine to have its way with her, as we’ve been brought up to accept. This is a mature woman with gumption, courage, intelligence, and leadership capacities that we’ve never been told about” (p. 78). This Blessed Virgin Mary is a direct manifestation of the Divine Mother. The term, virgin, is applied with the understanding that it refers to a woman unto herself; inviolable, sovereign, a divinely born avatar. Rigoglioso notes that Mary was a priestess, a master of Divine Love and the Womb Mysteries. Her name, Mary, is a moniker for her status as such. Rigoglioso writes: “As we have learned, the very name that was passed down to us as Mary probably comes from the Egyptian Meri, an honorific priestess title that meant ‘beloved of, loving, lover, and the one who is loving’” (p. 126). Through the power of the Holy Womb Chakra, Mary was a priestess initiated into the Divine Mysteries. Thus empowered, she gave birth, parthenogenetically to Jesus (my understanding of parthenogenesis is that a woman would give birth to a female, but here, obviously that is not the case). This was made possible by using sacred medicine or herbs designed to help open her awareness to the interdimensional realms, so she could manifest an Avatar. Mary was also parthenogenetically conceived by her mother Anne. Rigoglioso tells us that, from the age of six months, Mary was tended by virgin priestesses and she continued her early life with them in the temple. Rigoglioso also discusses how Elizabeth, Anne’s sister and Mary’s aunt, was a supportive mentor to Mary when she was in the early stages of her pregnancy with Jesus (p. 75). Rigoglioso notes: “This…helps us recognize to a greater degree than ever before how Mary is an intimate champion of humanity’s healing and spiritual awakening. She encourages the expansion of consciousness far beyond what is typically thought possible in ordinary third-dimensional life. Indeed, she is all about helping people to achieve their own God/dess Self (p. 125). In addition to being steeped in scholarship, the book’s seven chapters, provide a spiritual primer for those interested in deepening their understanding of and relationship to the noncanonical Mary with integration activities and information on how to access guided online meditations. Rigoglioso invites readers to keep a Mary Journal to chronicle their experiences of Mary and their thoughts and feelings about this spiritual endeavor, …guiding them on an experiential and intellectual journey. Thus, Rigoglioso’s book is as much a personal endeavor as an academic (historical/herstorical) exploration and revelation of who and what Mary the mother of Jesus was and is to the author and to the world/Earth. Ultimately, Rigoglioso’s book exponentially expands the traditional understanding of Mother Mary. Her revelations will broaden your understanding—if not outright blow your mind. During those beginnings of what is now called “the second wave of feminism,” everything was new to us and everything was mushed together — the political, the economic, the intellectual, the emotional, the spiritual. I liked that a lot; it felt as if all the parts of myself were coming together. During that time, I learned something crucial the imagery and concepts of patriarchal religion justify and are embedded in the material structures of oppression. I don’t know which came first, institutionalized oppression (of everyone; I’m not speaking here only of women) or the religious expression of that oppression. All I’m certain of is that patriarchal religion permeates, for example, the Oxford English Dictionary, which I use all the time, in conjunction with Websters’ First New Intergalactic Wickedary of the English Language, conjured by Mary Daly in cahoots with Jane Caputi.
(Special Post) BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE FOR EL PASO ARTIST MARIO COLÍN by Donna Snyder

Born in Juárez in 1959, Mario Colín lived his entire life in the Five Points area of Central El Paso, where he attended Houston Elementary and Austin High School. From the age of fifteen, he worked as a construction worker, building silos and other large construction projects across the U.S.A., at some point hitch hiking from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic shores. In his late twenties, he began to focus all his attention and energy on art, which had been an interest since early childhood, working as a muralist and portrait painter. Much of his art is of a religious nature, although he also painted secular art, portraits, and historical scenes. Colín painted his first mural of the Virgin of Guadalupe in collaboration with deceased artist Chuck Zavala in 1987 at Esparza’s Grocery, a small store in Central El Paso. It has now become a shrine, with community members building a stone arch and bringing flowers and candles, and has been pronounced a religious site by the parish church. Since that first mural, Colín has painted over 40 pieces of public art, many of which have become landmarks. Many of those murals are in that same Central El Paso neighborhood, on or near Piedras, including the House of Pizza, Los Alamos Grocery, The Elbo Room bar, the former Sanitary Plumbing at Piedras and Fort Boulevard. Colín twice painted a 25 foot mural of the Virgin of Guadalupe, at Alameda and Zaragoza, across from the Ysleta mission. The first version, painted in 1997, became decayed, but was a popular landmark. That mural has appeared in periodicals, art books, calendars, many newspaper articles, and in photographs exhibited in the El Paso Art Museum and galleries. In 2004, Señor José Villalobos donated and members of the community contributed money to pay laborers to replaster the wall of the century-old adobe building where it is located, and Colín repainted the entire mural for donations from passers-by and community members. Colín’s work has also been featured on the International History Channel and Canal 44, XHUI TV, in a Ford television commercial, and numerous times in the El Paso Times and the defunct El Paso Herald-Post, as well as in periodicals such as Texas Monthly, Dallas Morning News, Texas Observer, Austin American Statesman, Stanton Street magazine; literary journals such as Mezcla and GypsyMag.com; in documentaries including Walls that Speak: El Paso’s Murals, directed by Jim Klaes; in art books such as Colors on Desert Walls: The Murals of El Paso and Texas 24:7, and in various editions of Chicano Studies: Survey and Analysis, a text book used throughout the country.

Cast in 771, the bell reenacts the music of whales to remind people of the Female Beginning, the self-creative power innate all beings. Today is Day 2 of the New Year in the reconstructed Magoist Calendar characterized by 13 months per year and 28 days per month. We are heading toward the Solstice that falls on Dec. 21/22 (Day 5 of the first month in the Magoist Calendar), which happens to be the day of the first full moon of Year 2. We just passed Year 1 or 5915 Magoma Era (the Gregorian 2018). For Year 1, we had the New Year Day on December 18 of 2017, the first new moon day before the December Solstice. That makes December 18 of 2017 our lunation 1, the first lunar year that the reconstructed Magoist Calendar determines its first day of the Year 1! Although relatively short in history, the Mago Work began to celebrate the Nine Day Mago Celebration on the day of December Solstice annually since 2015. With the reconstructed Magoist Calendar, we placed it in its due timeframe, the Ninth Month and the Ninth Day, which fell on August 8, 2018 (US PST) and celebrated it for the first time according to the Magoist Calendar. Apparently, this had to be a mid-Summer event. This left us with another seasonal event, the New Year/Solstice Celebration. A few from around the globe (Germany, Korea, Italy and the US) participated in it or hosted their own local vigils. The Korean temple bell is the key symbol for the Magoist Calendar as well as the Magoist Cosmogony. It is not a coincidence that it is struck on the midnight of the New Year’s Eve. It is Korean tradition that even modern Koreans gather at the bell tower in Seoul to hear the sound of the bell at midnight. And these bells are gigantic weighing 19 tons in the case of the Emile Bell. That this convention has an ancient Magoist root remains esoteric. For not only they strike the bell 28 times in the evening indicating the 28 lunar stations that the Moon stops by in the sky throughout the year (please read below what the 28 day lunar journey means and how it is represented by women). But also the Korean temple bell is no mere acoustic device to play the beautiful sound only. (Essay) Contemplating How Her Creativity Proceeds by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is an edited excerpt from the conclusion of chapter 5 of the author’s book, PaGaian Cosmology: Re-inventing Earth-based Goddess Religion. It is a chapter on the process of the Wheel of the Year. for the Northern Hemisphere version: https://pagaian.org/pagaian-wheel-of-the-year/ It seems to me that the main agenda of the Cosmos is ongoing Creativity, “never-ending renewal” it may be termed, and that this is expressed in Earth’s Seasonal Wheel through the transitions of Autumn,Winter, Spring, Summer; and in the ubiquitous process of a Cosmic Triplicity of Space to Be, Urge to Be and this Place of Being, a dynamic that has often been imagined as the Triple Goddess. In the flow of the PaGaian Wheel of the Year, the Seasonal transitions of the Wheel and the Triplicity of the Cosmos come together. There are two celebrations of the Old One/Crone or the Cosmogenetic quality of autopoiesis creating the Space to Be; and they are Lammas/Late Summer and Samhain/Deep Autumn, which are the meridian points of the two quarters of the waxing dark phase. At Lammas, the first in the dark phase, we may identify with the dark and ancient Wise One – dissolve into Her; at Samhain, we may consciously participate in Her process of the transformation of death/the passing of all. The whole dark part of the cycle is about dissolving/dying/letting go of being – becoming – nurturing it (the midwifing of Lammas/Late Summer), stepping into the power of it (the certain departure of Autumn Equinox/Mabon), the fertility (of Samhain/Deep Autumn), the peaking of it (at Winter Solstice). The meridian points of the two quarters of the waxing light phase then are celebrations of the Young One/Virgin or the Cosmogenetic quality of differentiation, the new continually emerging, the Urge to Be; and they are Imbolc/Early Spring and Beltaine/High Spring. At Imbolc, the first in the light phase, we may identify with She who is shining and new – as we take her form; at Beltaine, we may consciously participate in Her process of the dance of life. The whole light part of the cycle is about coming into being: nurturing it (the midwifing of Imbolc/Early Spring), stepping into the power of it (the certain return of Spring Equinox/Eostar), the fertility (of Beltaine/High Spring), the peaking of it (at Summer Solstice). In the PaGaian wheel of ceremony there are two particular celebrations of the Mother, the Cosmogenetic quality of communion; and they are the Solstices. If one imagines the light part of the cycle as a celebration of the ‘Productions of Time’, and the dark part of the cycle as a celebration of ‘Eternity’, the Solstices then are meeting points, points of interchange, and are celebrations of the communion/relational field of Eternity with the Productions of Time. This is a relationship which does happen in this Place, in this Web. This Place of Being, this Web, is a Communion – it is the Mother; the Solstices mark Her birthings, Her gateways. The Equinoxes then – both Spring and Autumn – are two celebrations wherein the balance of all three Faces/Creative qualities is particularly present: in the PaGaian wheel, the Equinoxes have been special celebrations of Demeter and Persephone – echoing the ancient tradition of Mother-Daughter Mysteries that celebrate the awesomeness of the continuity of life, its creative tension/balance. Both Equinoxes then are celebrations and contemplations of empowerment through deep Wisdom – one contemplation during the dark phase and one during the light phase. The Autumn Equinox is a descent to Wisdom, the Spring Equinox is an emergence with Wisdom gained. I like to think of the Equinoxes, and of the ancient icons of Demeter and Persephone, as celebrations of the delicate ‘curvature of space-time’, the fertile balance of tensions which enables it all. Her Creative Place The Mother aspect then may be understood to be particularly present at four of the Seasonal Moments, which are also regarded traditionally as the Solar festivals; and in this cosmology Sun is felt as Mother. I recognize these four as points of interchange: at Autumn Equinox, Mother is present primarily as Giver – She is letting Persephone go, at Spring Equinox, She is present primarily as Receiver – welcoming the Daughter back, at Winter Solstice the Mother gives birth, creates form, at Summer Solstice, She opens again full of radiance, and disperses form. The Mother is Agent/Actor at the Solstices. She is Participant/Witness at the Equinoxes, where it is then really Persephone who is Agent/Actor, embodying an inseparable Young One and Old One. The Old One is often named as Hecate, who completes the Trio – all seamlessly within each other. Another possible way to visual it, or to tell the story, is this: The Mother – Demeter – is always there, at the Centre if you like. Persephone cycles around. She is the Daughter who returns in the Spring as flower, who will become fruit/grain of the Summer, who at Lammas assents to the dissolution – the consumption. At Autumn Equinox She returns to the underworld as seed – Her harvest is rejoiced in, Her loss is grieved, as She becomes Sovereign of the Underworld – Her face changes to the Dark One, Crone (Hecate). As the wheel turns into the light part of the cycle She becomes Young One/Virgin again. Persephone (as Seed) is that part of Demeter that can be all three aspects – can move through the complete cycle. The Mother and Daughter are really One, and embody the immortal process of creation and destruction. Demeter hands Persephone the wheat, the Mystery, and the thread of life is unbroken – it goes on forever. It is immortal, it is eternal. Even though it is true that all will be lost, and all is lost – Being always arises again: within this field of time there is never-ending renewal, eternity. This is what is revealed in the ubiquitous three faces of the Creative Dynamic/ She of Old, the Triplicity that runs through the Cosmos. The Seed of Life never …
Samhain/Deep Autumn within the Creative Cosmos by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is an edited excerpt from Chapter 4 of the author’s new book A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony. Traditionally the dates for Samhain/Deep Autumn are: Northern Hemisphere – October 31st/November 1st Southern Hemisphere – April 30th/May 1st though the actual astronomical date varies. It is the meridian point or cross-quarter day between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice, thus actually a little later in early May for S.H., and early November for N.H., respectively. A Samhain/Deep Autumn Ceremonial Altar In this cosmology, Deep Autumn/Samhain is a celebration of She Who creates the Space to Be par excellence. This aspect of the Creative Triplicity is associated with the autopoietic quality of Cosmogenesis[i] and with the Crone/Old One of the Triple Goddess, who is essentially creative in Her process. This Seasonal Moment celebrates the process of the Crone, the Ancient One … how we are formed by Her process, and in that sense conceived by Her: it is an ‘imaginal fertility,’ a fertility of the dark space, the sentient Cosmos. It mirrors the fertility and conception of Beltaine (which is happening in the opposite Hemisphere at the same time). Some Samhain/Deep Autumn Story This celebration of Deep Autumn has been known in Christian times as “Halloween,” since the church in the Northern Hemisphere adopted it as “All Hallow’s eve” (31st October) or “All Saint’s Day” (1st November). This “Deep Autumn” festival as it may be named in our times, was known in old Celtic times as Samhain (pronounced “sow-een), which is an Irish Gaelic word, with a likely meaning of “Summer’s end,” since it is the time of the ending of the Spring-Summer growth. Many leaves of last Summer are turning and falling at this time: it was thus felt as the end of the year, and hence the New Year. It was and is noted as the beginning of Winter. It was the traditional Season for bringing in the animals from the outdoor pastures in pastoral economies, and when many of them were slaughtered. Earth’s tilt is continuing to move the region away from the Sun at this time of year. This Seasonal Moment is the meridian point of the darkest quarter of the year, between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice; the dark part of the day is longer than the light part of the day and is still on the increase. It is thus the dark space of the annual cycle wherein conception and dreaming up the new may occur. As with any New Year, between the old and the new, in that moment, all is possible. We may choose in that moment what to pass to the future, and what to relegate to compost. Samhain may be understood as the Space between the breaths. It is a generative Space – the Source of all. There is particular magic in being with this Dark Space. This Dark Space which is ever present, may be named as the “All-Nourishing Abyss,”[ii] the “Ever-Present Origin.”[iii] It is a generative Place, and we may feel it particularly at this time of year, and call it to consciousness in ceremony. Some Samhain/Deep Autumn Motifs The fermentation of all that has passed begins. This moment may mark the Transformation of Death – the breakdown of old forms, the ferment and rot of the compost, and thus the possibility of renewal.[iv] It is actually a movement towards form and ‘re-solution’ (as Beltaine – its opposite – begins a movement towards entropy and dissolution). With practice we begin to develop this vision: of the rot, the ferment, being a movement towards the renewal, to see the gold. And just so, does one begin to know the movement at Beltaine, towards expansion and thus falling apart, dissolution. In Triple Goddess poetics it may be expressed that the Crone’s face here at Samhain begins to change to the Mother – as at Beltaine the Virgin’s face begins to change to the Mother: the aspects are never alone and kaleidoscope into the other … it is an alive dynamic process, never static. The whole Wheel is a Creation story, and Samhain is the place of the conceiving of this Creativity, and it may be in the Spelling of it – saying what we will; and thus, beginning the Journey through the Wheel. Conception could be described as a “female-referring transformatory power” – a term used by Melissa Raphael in Thealogy and Embodiment:[v] conception happens in a female body, yet it is a multivalent cosmic dynamic, that is, it happens in all being in a variety of forms. It is not bound to the female body, yet it occurs there in a particular and obvious way. Androcentric ideologies, philosophies and theologies have devalued the event and occurrence of conception in the female body: whereas PaGaian Cosmology is a conscious affirmation, invocation and celebration of “female sacrality”[vi] as part of all sacrality. It does thus affirm the female as a place; as well as a place.[vii] ‘Conception’ is identified as a Cosmic Dynamic essential to all being – not exclusive to the female, yet it is a female-based metaphor, one that patriarchal-based religions have either co-opted and attributed to a father-god (Zeus, Yahweh, Chenrezig – have all taken on being the ‘mother’), or it has been left out of the equation altogether. Womb is the place of Creation – not some God’s index finger as is imagined in Michelangelo’s famous painting. Melissa Raphael speaks of a “menstrual cosmology”. It is an “ancient cosmology in which chaos and harmony belong together in a creation where perfection is both impossible and meaningless;”[viii] yet it is recently affirmed in Western scientific understanding of chaos, as essential to order and spontaneous emergence. Samhain is an opportunity for immersion in a deeper reality which the usual cultural trance denies. It may celebrate immersion in what is usually ‘background’ – the real world beyond and within time and space: which is actually the major portion of the Cosmos we live in.[ix] Samhain is about understanding that the Dark is a fertile place: in its decay and rot it seethes with infinite unseen complex golden threads connected to the wealth of Creativity of all that has gone before – like any …
Imbolc/Early Spring – a Season of Uncertainty by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

Traditionally the Seasonal transition of Imbolc/Early Spring, celebrated in early February in the Northern Hemisphere, and in early August in the Southern Hemisphere, has been a time of nurturing the new life that is beginning to show itself, around us and within. It is a time of committing one’s self to the new life and inspiration – in the garden, in the soul, and in the Cosmos. We may include in our celebrations and contemplations of this Season the beginnings of the new young Cosmos as She was, that time in our cosmic story when She was only a billion years old and galaxies were forming; and also the new which has continually emerged throughout the eons, and is ever coming forth. The flame of being, as it has been imagined by many cultures, within and around, is to be protected and nurtured: the new being requires dedication and attention. In the early stages of its advent, there is nothing certain about its staying power and growth: it may flicker and be vulnerable. There may be uncertainties of various kinds. There is risk and resistance to coming into being. The Universe itself knew resistance to its expansion when it encountered gravitation in our very beginnings, in the primordial Flaring Forth[i]. The unfolding of the Universe was never without creative tension. The Universe knows it daily, in every moment: and we participate in this creative tension of our place of being. Urge to Be budding forth Imbolc/Early Spring can be a time of remembering personal vulnerabilities, feeling them and accepting them, but remaining resolute in birthing and tending of the new, listening for and responding to the Urge to Be[ii]of the Creative Universe within. Brian Swimme has said (quoting cultural anthropologist A.L. Kroeber) that the destiny of the human is not “bovine placidity” but the highest degree of tension that can be creatively born[iii]. many flames of being, strengthening each other These times are filled with creative tension, collectively and for most, personally as well; there is much resistance, yet there is promise of so much good energy arising. We may be witness to both. This Season of Imbolc/Early Spring may encourage attention, intention and dedication to strengthening well-being: in self, and in the relational communal context, and opening to our direct immersion in the Well of Creativity. We may be strengthened with the joining of hands, as well as the listening within to the sacred depths, in ceremonial circle at this time. Lammas – the Sacred Consuming by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

Lammas, the first seasonal transition after Summer Solstice, may be summarised as the Season that marks and celebrates the Sacred Consuming, the Harvest of Life. Many indigenous cultures recognised the grain itself as Mother … Corn Mother being one of those images – She who feeds the community, the world, with Her own body: the Corn, the grain, the food, the bread, is Her body. She the Corn Mother, or any other grain Mother, was/is the original sacrifice … no need for extraordinary heroics: it is the nature of Her being. She is sacrificed, consumed, to make the people whole with Her body (as the word “sacrifice” means “to make whole”). She gives Herself in Her fullness to feed the people …. the original Communion. In cultures that preceded agriculture or were perhaps pastoral – hunted or bred animals for food – this cross-quarter day may not have been celebrated, or perhaps it may have been marked in some other way. Yet even in our times when many are not in relationship with the harvest of food directly, we may still be in relationship with our place: Sun and Earth and Moon still do their dance wherever you are, and are indeed the Ground of one’s being here … a good reason to pay attention and homage, and maybe as a result, and in the process, get the essence of one’s life in order. One does not need to go anywhere to make this pilgrimage … simply Place one’s self. The seasonal transition of Lammas may offer that in particular, being a “moment of grace” – as Thomas Berry has named the seasonal transitions, when the dark part of the day begins to grow longer, as the cloak of darkness slowly envelopes the days again: it is timely to reflect on the Dark Cosmos in Whom we are, from Whom we arise and to Whom we return – and upon that moment when like Corn Mother we give ourselves over. This reflection is good, will serve a person and all – to live fully, as well as simply to be who we are: this dark realm of manifesting is the core of who we are. And what difference might such reflection make to our world – personal and collective – to live in this relationship with where we are, and thus who we are. We all are the grain that is harvested and all are Her harvest … perhaps one may use a different metaphor: the truth that may be reflected upon at this seasonal moment after the peaking of Sun’s light at Summer Solstice and the wind down into Autumn, is that everything passes, all fades away … even our Sun shall pass. All is consumed. So What are we part of? (I write it with a capital because surely it is a sacred entity) And how might we participate creatively? We are Food – whether we like it or not … Lammas is a good time to get with the Creative plot, though many find it the most difficult, or focus on more exoteric celebration. May we be interesting food[i]. We are holy Communion, like Corn Mother. (Budoji Essay 2) The Magoist Cosmogony by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang

“Mago, the eponymous Goddess, is the head, ruler, and guardian of Mago-seong. She represents the eco-community of the Earth in the intergalactic universe.” [Author’s Note: This and subsequent essays are part of the forthcoming book tentatively entitled, The Magoist Cosmogony from the Budoji (Epic of the Emblem City), Translation and Interpretation, Volume 1, that I am currently writing. I am indebted to Harriet Ann Ellenberger, who has given me her prompt feedback and editorial advice in a most supportive manner. I am also grateful for Rosemary Mattingley, who has provided copy-editing of my essays in Return to Mago Webzine.] Chapter One (Translation) Mago-seong was the grand castle located in the highest place on earth. Revering the Heavenly Emblem (Cheon-bu), it succeeded the Former Heaven (Seon-cheon). There were four Heavenly Persons[i] at the four corners of the castle. They built pillars and sounded music.[ii] The eldest was named Hwang-gung (Yellow Gung),[iii] the second Cheong-gung (Blue Gung), the third Baek-so (White So), and the last Heuk-so (Black So). Mother of two Gungs was Gung-hui (Goddess Gung)[iv] and mother of two Sos was So-hui (Goddess So). Gung-hui and So-hui were the daughters of Mago. Mago was born in Jim-se (My/Our/This World).[v] Mago had no [human] emotion of pleasure and resentment. Taking the Former Heaven male and the Latter Heaven female, Mago bore two Hui Goddesses without mate. Like Mago, two Goddesses, without mate but by the emotion [of the cosmic periods], each bore two Heavenly Persons and two Heavenly Women. They were four Heavenly Persons and four Heavenly Goddesses in all. [i] Here “in” in Cheon-in 天人 is transliterated as a gender-neutral term, “beings.” It means “a person” but often transliterated as “a man.” [ii] The whole sentence can also be translated as “They made tubes and composed music.” [iii] “Ssi” in Hwang-gung-ssi 黃穹氏 intimates both a leader by name of Hwang-gung and the clan led by Hwang-gung. Other terms of “Cheong-gung-ssi,” “Baek-so-ssi,” and “Heuk-so-ssi” are used in the same way. [iv] Literally “hui” in Gung-hui 穹姬 and So-hui 巢姬 means a woman. Since it refers to Mago’s two daughters, I translated it “Goddess.” [v] “Jim” in Jim-se 朕世 can be transliterated as “my,” “our,” or “this.” ◊ Mago-seong (Mago Castle) was the grand castle located on the highest place on the Earth. Mago-seong, located on the highest mountain, is the primordial home of Mago, the Primordial Goddess, and Her descendants, human ancestors. Mago-seong also refers to the Earth itself (see Chapter 2). Mago, the eponymous Goddess, is the head, ruler, and guardian of Mago-seong. She represents the eco-community of the Earth in the intergalactic universe. Mago-seong’s location on the highest mountain symbolizes Mago-seong’s supremacy as the prototype of a Magoist state that will follow the cosmogonic event. Mago-seong’s location also indicates its proximity to the extraterrestrial cosmos, in particular to the Sun, the direct cause of the auto-genesis of all things on Earth. (Essay 2) Why Reenact the Nine-Mago Movement? by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang

[Author’s Note: The sequel of this essay is released in preparation for 2015 Nine-Day Solstice Celebration Project.] Part 2 Goddess Goma, the Magoist Shaman Ruler, and Her Nona-Mago Tradition Not until the autumn of 2012 did the pervasive manifestation of the number nine symbolism in Magoism surface in my consciousness. The information that the shrine of Gaeyang Halmi (Gaeyang Grandmother/Goddess), the Sea Goddess of Korea, was once called the Temple of Gurang (Nine Goddesses 九嫏祠) awakened a deep memory in me. It was a revelation to me and I began to connect the dots! That summer, I had joined the field research team of Konkuk University’s Korean Oral Literature graduate program. With them I visited the Shrine of the Sea Saint (Suseong-dang 水聖堂) in Buan, North Jeolla, S. Korea to collect folklore from the locals. Only when I was processing the data that the team gathered to write a report, did I come across the original name of the shrine, the Temple of the Nine Goddesses. And the Nine Goddesses refer to Gaeyang Halmi and her eight daughters. It is unknown how and when it was replaced by the current name, the Shrine of the Sea Saint. It is evident, however, that a linguistic femicide took place; the female-connoted term, the Nine Goddesses, was replaced by the sex/gender neutral term, the Sea Saint.
