I dive into your waves
letting go of myself
I revel in bliss
as your touch penetrates
each one of my curves
beloved Sea Goddess
you enter my body
and reach for my depths
I swim with abandon
I feast on the blue
above and around me
telling a sacred truth:
the water's a doorway
deep into my cells
the mind is expanded
an ocean embraced
Your water's a cradle
Sea Goddess, my love
mysterious and healing
it knows no end
it cleanses the spirit
it washes away
the teardrops, the bloodstains
the scars I have worn
And there, behold!
I emerge reborn
a mermaid baby
of sunlight and foam
a shimmering creature
who's young and age-old
a daughter of Tethys
breathing her ancient song.
Author’s Note: Swimming in the Aegean can feel like a mystical experience—an immersion into the body of the Sea Goddess. This poem reflects my perception of her dual nature. She can be sensual, like the foam-born Aphrodite, or she can become a maternal presence, like Tethys—a primordial Greek Mother Goddess associated with the sea. The image of the mermaid, called a tritoness in ancient Greek, reflects my deep sense of connection with the element of water.
