My Lucy died less than two months ago and the grief I feel comes and goes like the wind, with me marking each moment – witnessing – through word and feeling… I lost both my beloved companions within five weeks of each other and grief strikes like a knife for one or the other. Yesterday was Lucy’s day. On my walk I picked up an acorn and planted it next to her grave. The seeds of new life are always gestating even through loss – Later I learned that a cherished friend of mine had also just died.There is a poignancy to fall – a gathering in of crystalline light.The season is shifting, and cool nights have come to our parched land for the first time in a few years, a joyful shift. Perhaps vibrant fall color will be abundant this year after two years of absence? All of our trees and plants have been under such stress for so long that I am more than ready for a frost to let them go, imagining perennial nutrients returning ‘home’ to their roots, the underground mycelial network… The field has been shorn of millions drooping wildflowers. Now seeds are abundant and easy to access for birds and animals to feast upon.The light is so clear, and the air is cleaner than it has been for months.Each day is a gift.Then I learn of the latest violent shooting atrocity and the mobilizing of the rampant far right bent on vengeance and retribution. I feel myself splitting in two. All of Nature is trying to show us how to let go – to return to a natural and more compassionate way of life. Why are we so bent on hatred and self – destruction?I visit the graves of my dead dogs and wonder how this could be so… Nature is refuge and what is happening to humanity is beyond my comprehension. In response to the Covid-19 – the Corona Virus – for the past week or so it feels as though there has been an extra dose of FB memes imploring people to focus only on love and light, flooding our newsfeeds with pretty pictures and words. As nice as this may be for some, it doesn’t resonate as real and I am advocating for REAL… real emotions, real feelings, real conversation, real understanding of where we humans fit in the current scenario that is now playing out. I am advocating, pleading even, that we feel into our grief, our sadness, and understanding of what we have done to our world (and we have all participated in some way). I’m advocating for realistic assessment of where we stand in relation to our Earth and the future that reality could hold for us. I am advocating for hope with REAL action. I am not advocating descent into the dismal with no hope, but I also do not want to be shamed for feeling the other emotions we humans are given. In a recent meditation with a group focused on healing Mother Earth and ourselves, the following writing came through. As intense as the message was, as well as the feelings it elicited, I was surprised at how effortlessly the words flowed. My experience with the painting was anything but effortless flow and, in fact, was a most difficult birthing. Coming through the portal of the canvas, the Being who I would come to know as Gaia, fought me constantly. Sometimes it’s like this though as they come with a specific agenda and my work is to ensure their message – in words and/or in image – is their truth and not mine. I’m the channel to ensure their voices are heard clearly and, at times, very loudly.Gaia Speaks and Fierce Mother come to remind humans of the desperate need for powerful activism with visionary voices speaking fierce truth. Their message is one of urgency with need for authentic feelings, conversations and real change. May Gaia be heard, may She be seen. Gaia Speaks: The Question Why do you insist on staying in the light when I’m in the dark? Why the obsession with love when so many of your species hates me and my children? Why do you avoid the feeling of fear when I’m afraid daily of my limbs being torn from me, my waters poisoned, my children brutally trapped and murdered just so you can have an expensive house or car or some exotic meal or a rare aphrodisiac? Why? I feel fear as I wonder what is to happen to me. I feel hatred for those who rape and kill me. I feel anxiety for I don’t know how much more of this my body can handle. Why then should you be allowed to exist in your love and light bubble, ignoring what is happening around you, just so you can avoid feeling bad? I don’t have the luxury of shutting out the world for I AM the world and my existence is dependent on me staying highly vigilant while you take your cruises that pollute my oceans, jet around the world poisoning my very breath, refuse reusable packaging in lieu of convenient plastic that kills and maims my children, while driving your cars that require cutting deeply into my body and extracting my blood. Why do you get to live in love and light, ‘ enjoying your comfortable privilege as you simultaneously throw me and my children into darkness? Why, when in truth I continue to provide YOU life? I give you air to breathe, though you continue to pollute it. I give you water for your body, though you continue to pollute it and extract it for gain. I give you shelter, though you continue to tear down and destroy that which you need. I continue to give you food, but you only want to poison it. So tell me again Why you get to focus only on love and light when your actions and ways bring so much darkness to me and my children? Tell me Human Why I should continue allowing YOU to live. Why? (Art) The Shaman’s Necklace by Kathy Martone

The snake, symbol of initiation and rebirth, arises from the green lavaliere and merges into red fox, symbol of feminine magic. Poised at the center of the upper circle of the lemnescate formed by the serpentine body is the phoenix, emblem of immortality. At the end of the snake’s tail hangs a small clear quartz crystal, a spiritual transmitter, and balanced on the bottom curve is a cross, representing the interpenetration of spirit into matter. This piece was inspired by a dream in which a Native American shaman gifted a circle of women with a platter of green necklaces. Each of us in the circle was instructed to choose one of the necklaces. When it came time for me to choose, my necklace immediately transformed itself into a large snake that then sprouted the head of a fox. ◊ ARTIST STATEMENT “Art is an act of the soul {that celebrates} the temple of consciousness…” –Julia Cameron The magical world of dreams has fascinated and intrigued me for as long as I can remember. Inspired by a dream in 2005, I began making velvet banners imprinted with the image of one of my dream figures and embellished with ribbons, rhinestones, feathers, glass beads, Swarovski crystals, pieces of jewelry, and semi-precious stones. As a Jungian psychologist and shamanic practitioner, energy and depth of meaning are very important to me. So I frequently will accent my tapestries with symbolic objects, such as old pieces of jewelry, the lining from a purse that belonged to my grandmother, leaves from a sacred place, animal fur, or a piece of ribbon I wore as a little girl. Layering these materials into a meaningful image evokes for me the multi-layered realms of dreams, myth and metaphor. Not unlike tarot cards, these colorful tapestries stand alone in their ability to evoke deep inner wisdom and, like the magical nets of ancient shamans, they ensnare the features of my dream spirits as they stare back at me from their watery dimensions.
Reweaving the Great Round: a winter solstice story by Sara Wright

Photo by Sara Wright The scent of balsam wafts through the room as I cut the boughs to make my annual wreath to honor all trees, those that still stand, those who are slaughtered. My intention each year is twofold – acknowledge my love for these sentient beings and to participate in the unfolding of the Great Round. Other intentions vary from year to year until recently when a prayer for protection from the dark forces that permeate the psyches of so many peoples of this earth becomes a yearly part of this winter ceremony, even as a multitude of others suffer intolerable losses. Today’s American culture creates endless non-religious festivals to celebrate the entrance into this winter season that are totally devoid of meaning beyond consumerism – buy more ‘stuff’ – chop down more trees. These devourers can never be satiated because the chasm is too wide and deep. The Christians celebrate Jesus’s birth although he was born in the spring, revealing the ‘religious’ obsession of turning dark into light to rid those folks of the true meaning of this season. Sorrowfully, I note new agers follow suit with winter solstice ‘celebrations’, and their ‘cosmic coming of the light’. Once I did this too, but nature intervened making it clear that I was on the wrong track (the return of the light comes in February) Jung once said that ‘fairy tales are pure products of nature’. What we now know from painstaking scholarship that Jung was right. Some of the original fairy tales are thousands of years old and were passed down by the oral tradition by preliterate peoples in Europe. They are an important part of our European heritage some stretching back to the bronze age or beyond. Like most oral traditions no one knows for sure. To complicate matters in today’s world more recent Greek and Celtic myths (among others) are often re-written by feminists to suit the needs of the writer. Of course, this approach has merit but the problem with this reconfiguring is that the original messages are buried or lost. One fairy tale comes to mind to demonstrate the importance of having adequate protection from the ‘cold’. Rose Red/Rose White befriend a bear who comes into the house and sleeps by the fire every night to protect the family from the dangerous forces that come to life during the darkest months of the year. In the spring when he leaves, much to the sorrow of the children, the bear, a powerful animal (instinctual?) protector, becomes a man who has a brother. Both marry the girls. There are several versions of this story, but the core message is the same. Befriending the bear provides the girls and their mother with the protection they need from ‘winter’ and eventually the bear is integrated into the instinctual female psyche as a positive male force. What interests me is that Indigenous peoples throughout the northern hemisphere also acknowledge the bear as a powerful root healer and protector in all their stories. This entrance into the darkest months of the year brings us to the edge of what we think we know. In the northern hemisphere three months of deep cold are ahead. Acknowledged or not, our own deaths, and the deaths of those non – human beings around us are uppermost in our minds. Nature is mirroring human chaos by demonstrating that the next seasonal round will be darker still with unpredictable weather. Political insanity looms and yet we continue to deny… we cling to false hope with grizzled claws refusing to let go. Our earliest Indigenous stories inform us that this is the season to acknowledge the element of fire – that which warms us, that which destroys. Indigenous and country people in some cultures still wear masks to help protect them from dark forces, and at the same time acknowledge the reality that individual and collective shadow elements are on the move. The powers of fire burn too hot even as earth’s temperature drops. When will we acknowledge that our mechanistic cultural shadow has become demonic? Do we even notice that the images we see of ourselves have become cartoons? These thoughts and questions swirl around me as I weave my wreath returning my thoughts to The Great Round – those of abundance and attrition. Beginning with gratitude for my beloved dogs, bird, Animal Healer and close friends I weave my personal prayers into this Circle. I ask to stay awake, provide support for those like me who live unpalatable truths. And yes, I give thanks for Life even as I acknowledge my fears. I follow the Seasons of the Great Round (Winter solstice, February’s First Light, Spring Equinox, May Day, Summer solstice, August’s Feast of the New Grain, Fall Equinox, All Hallows). I have learned over half a lifetime that the eight turnings of the year are fluid, exact days don’t matter, timing does, so I pay attention to Nature’s nudges and let natural forces determine just when and how I need to highlight these turnings. This year, as is my custom, I tipped my greens the day before the first snow/ice in November but only last week wove my Wreath for Life. My Medicine Wheel is tucked away in the darkest corner of the room. The four elements, four directions, the cranes that create the circle with bodies and beaks, red feet rooted into rich dark earth seem to be crying out for further attention. Feeling that nudge sends me out to gather more greens which I then wove in between starry lights. I placed spiral shells on the shelf just below the wheel wondering about the call from the sea, built a fire in the stove and watched Winter Moon rise high in the sky circled by stars…The dogs and I curled up on the couch in front of the warm fire grateful for the heat. In my first memory, I lay among the exuberant peonies bursting into Moonlit white, beguiling pink, raucous blood crimson from tiny buds. Clasping hands, the peonies and I held Earth’s beauty tight In dawn’s ever-brightening kiss of the sun. At that instant I did not yet know all I had sacrificed for my birth. Did I remember gamboling contentedly in the Otherworld’s fairy light While waiting to emerge into fragile flesh on 20th century Earth? Did I know that the price for this mortal human life would be Pain, hunger, violence, anger, bereavement, and death? Over the years I have often wondered why the goddesses choose to dwell On Earth, consorting with us humans full of faults and tragedies. Why did they create our eggshell brittle bodies and minds And remain to help us pick up the pieces when each life fades so soon like Peony blooms in the blistering late summer? Why did Durga fight the Demon to save us?*Why did Demeter regenerate the landscape to nourish us** And Amaterasu emerge from her sanctuary cave to revive us with Her sunlight?*** I think my own answer arose in that first moment of consciousness among the peonies, That ur memory from which all others in my life evolved, When I spun with gratitude in Earth’s gravitational orbit and Fell in love with all life on our planet. The ancients say that the Greek goddess Selene Drove Her chariot, the moon, across the sky. She invented peonies to reflect the glow of moonbeams onto Earth And thus protect us from the terrors of the night and evil spirits. Perhaps, instead, She simply longed to see our faces shining in Hers. Just as we are enlightened by experiencing our own divinity, Could She be seeking illumination in her own humanness amongst us? She witnesses as we care for injured animals and newborn trees Make love and comfort and caress Build cozy shelters, cook food, teach children the ways of our ancestors Whistle and sing and cry and speak poetry Dance and paint and sculpt and weave. She sees all those things we do to ease Earth’s pain, hunger, violence, anger, bereavement, and death And so grow communion and compassion and service To make everyone’s every moment the best of our world. The goddesses hold close the truth that the bliss of the sun on our cheek at first light While fierce blooms rise from the dirt to reflect the radiance of the moon Is the greatest gift in the universe. They honor that the acts we humans do to soothe suffering and sorrow are As holy and worthy of reverence as ancient myths and revered rituals. (Essay 1) Open, Please!: Persian & Islamic Tales of Women Rescued by Mountains by Krista Rodin, Ph.D.

Throughout Central Asia there are many legends of women who refused to convert to a new religion or way of life in order to maintain their purity. In some of these stories the woman fled into the barren desert mountains and prayed for refuge within. The mountains opened up, water flowed, and the woman was able to find shelter. The reason for the flight was to avoid persecution and to maintain a traditional religion, though it was also often framed as escaping men in order to remain physically and spiritually pure. While the stories are patterned in the same manner, the religion they wished to protect was different in three of these stories giving rise to an understanding of the perpetual nature of doctrine induced geo-political change in this region and some of the ancient animosities. Today, the locations of these mountain sanctuaries, three in Iran and two near the Iranian border in Turkmenistan, are pilgrimage sites for the sacred traditions they were intended to protect. All of these sites have a Persian heritage and as Herodutus in his Histories pointed out in the 5th C BCE, “It is not their (Persian) custom to make and set up statues and temples and altars but they offer sacrifices on the highest peaks of the mountains.” Each of these sites also has a water source near the sacred cave, which harkens back to the early Persian goddess of fertility and water, Anahita. The generic pattern of the legend gives rise to the merging of boundaries, physical and spiritual, as well as a reversal of traditional hierarchical conquest and gender roles. Nokhur, Turkmenistan It is impossible to put a chronology to the sites as they may have been used for worship since well before Herodotus’ writings. Perhaps, though, the site preserving the oldest tradition is the one found in Nokhur, Turkmenistan. The small village of Nohkur lies about 1,100 m above the Karakum Desert not far from the Iranian border and wandering amid the bare hillsides it is easy to get lost. There are no border markings here, just a sea of tall crusty brown waves of mountain ridges that have been witness to caravan trading since the beginning of human migration and commerce. Time seems to stand still in this tiny hamlet where there is a hallow 2000 year old sacred sycamore tree, 100 year old mud brick and rock houses that are held up with rotting wood posts, and a millennia old cemetery where the graves are marked with posts etched with stair like designs and Urial mountain sheep horns as capitals to protect the dead and ward off evil. The villagers earn their living through sheep herding, agriculture and silk production as they have for centuries. Nokhur Ancient Cemetery The people of this small region of the Kopat Dagh mountains are said to be descendants of Alexander’s army. Their language and traditions are distinct from the rest of Turkmenistan, as they also are with their more closely aligned Iranian neighbors. While they are active practicing Muslims, their traditions remain laced with remnants of ancient animism as seen in the cemetery and the legend of the cave. The greatest additional source of income comes from the tourists who visit the Bibi Qyz Cave. The story of Bibi Qyz is quite similar to that of her neighbor about 80 miles to the north along the main road, Bibi Parau, whose shrine is distinctly Islamic and whose site is the second most famous pilgrimage site in Turkmenistan. The term ‘Bibi’ is used as an honorific title for a woman, similar to ‘Lady’. One of the main differences between the two is the sacred background to the legend. Bibi Parau’s story distinctly Muslim and the ca. 11th C site has a mausoleum. The origin of Bibi Qyz, on the other hand, is lost in time and rather than man-made structures, the site has a sacred tree. The first is officially sponsored and promoted by the governmental tourist association; the second is merely acknowledged. According to the legend recounted at the site, Bibi Qyz was a young girl who wanted to dedicate herself to a solitary spiritual life. Her father, however, insisted she marry. Much like the Tibetan legend of Yeshe Tsogyal or the Catholic St. Barbara, she ran away to the mountains to avoid soiling herself with the physical and mental impurities of marital and everyday life. As her intended husband, accompanied by father, came closer and closer, she prayed to the rock face to bear witness to her pure desires and to open up and give her protection. A small cave opening appeared through which she immediately crawled in and was saved. She remains the woman of the mountain granting to those who seek her wishes that are pure of heart. She is especially called upon by women who have been unable to bear children. They come to ask her to bless them with offspring, and to tie their wishes written on cloth strips onto a special wishing tree that is about 40 feet below the cave. The cave is currently overseen by a caretaker family consisting of the family patriarch, and four women, two of whom are his sisters and two his wives. The oldest woman is also the leading fortune-teller and medium. She offers Bibi Qyz’s blessings on the basis of a balancing stone held on top of the index and middle finger of the right hand. Once the stone is balanced and it turns to the left on its own accord three times, then the blessing has occurred. After the blessing, the seeker is supposed to build a small rock pile to send wishes to Allah along with Bibi Qyz’s blessings. Bibi Oyz’s Cave, Nokhur, Turkmenistan Similar to Bibi Qyz, Bibi Parau (Bibi Paraw) escaped into a small cave in the Kopat Dagh mountains, but her story is a bit more elaborate. According to her legend, she was a very beautiful and virtuous young girl. Other women and girls in the village were jealous of her so when an invading army of infidels came one of the women decided to offer Bibi Parau in exchange for the warriors not attacking the village. Bibi Parau cursed the woman who was subsequently turned into a black stone. As the enemy troops approached, Bibi Parau asked the mountain to protect her and her virtue; the cave appeared and she was …

Max Dashu Sure. I would just like to add that the critique raised here addressed issues much broader than the substance of the article, which made some good points. But once the choice of graphics flagged the issue of representation, people had much more to say about that old yet still very fresh wound which is constantly reopened by the cultural habit of whitening Egypt, or interpreting Africa through a eurocentric lens. It is not on any one person to carry the weight of that; we all have a responsibility to address the issues, but especially those of us of European heritage need to familiarize ourselves with how this plays out over and over. Just as men have a responsibility to speak up in support of women when patriarchal assumptions are on board. We all can learn something from each other, along all the various axes of domination, and overthrow them in coalition. Naa Ayele Kumari I have often considered where the roots of this psychology comes from. It is dualistic thinking that causes us to compare and contrast, then sum up judgement of good or bad and place a value on each. It extends into competition and justification for war. It also doesn’t escape me that often this came with certain civilizations who systematically destroyed others. It didn’t just happen with blacks in Africa… but blacks in Asia and the Indus Valley as well. With the Aryan invasions of India, came the eventual introduction to lighter divinities and more emphasis on male divinities. Southern Indians, Sri Lankans are very dark… even more so than many African Blacks. The caste systems implemented by the Aryan invaders did the same thing to them casting them as “untouchables”. With that came the marginalization of their black female divinities such as Kali. Kali actually has 10-16 forms… from compassionate mother, the fountain of wisdom, to she of great beauty but she is minimized as just destructive and terrifying… especially as Brhaman, Vishnuu, and Shiva grow in popularity. One of Kali’s statues has her black self standing on top of Shiva because she conquered him. Later there is a discussion in on of the Hindu text explaining Kali (as Parvati) after being subdued by Shiva she becomes lighter. Demons are portrayed as black not only in Europe, which we know well, but also in China and in a lot of Buddhist iconography. In modern India, the sweet goddesses are shown as pink, the wrathful as black; and Krishna (name means “dark”) is turned powder blue. (Another of his titles, s’yam, also meaning dark, is the word translated as “green” in Green Tara.) The countercurrents (Black Mazu, loving Kali – esp in Bengal and south India, Black Madonna) bubbled up from the common people, who knew and longed for something other than the dominant racialized hierarchy. “Mago” tradition Magoism is a new word to the modern Western vocabulary, yet it has its linguistic roots in many parts of the globe and in an ancient knowledge and know-how almost lost. Dr Helen Hwang determinedly and methodically is excavating the little-understood historical Mother-Goddess knowledge of Korea, and its traditions, the Mago, and Magoism, and in doing so is unlocking another previously invisible door, and replacing another ripped-off corner of the global map of significant, almost-lost tradition and forgotten knowledge. This is a most welcomed prospect. The newness of this discovery for those who learn of it fills them with excitement because every step to remember the ancient ways, particularly the lost Goddess ways, and those ways that hint of Source, are crucial to humanity remembering itself. Moderns have become accustomed to modes of mind that strip the soul and psyche of finer attunement to earth, sea, stars and each other. This renders most adrift on a sea of seeming limitless freedoms, to be picked up by any technological hook that would substitute for inner knowing. The map becomes the new computer wiring, insurance policy or bank regulation to follow. I have made short spaces in the video where it could be paused. For more full participation in the ceremony, you could have some past photos of yourself, an altar with ancestor photos, a gingerbread snake, some apples sliced up, and some apple juice. The script for this Samhain ceremony is offered in Chapter 4 of my book A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony, with all acknowledgements and references there. However I want to acknowledge here the inspiration and some text of Robin Morgan’s poem “The Network of the Imaginary Mother” in her book Lady of the Beasts, for which I was given permission in my book. I also acknowledge here the paraphrase of some words by Starhawk in her book The Spiral Dance, used in the rite of Sailing to a New World. I also use a line from the poem Song of Hecate by Bridget McKern. Some may choose to remember any self from the entire evolutionary story, with whom they would like to identify. In the season leaves should love, since it gives them leave to move through the wind, towards the ground they were watching while they hung, legend says there is a seam stitching darkness like a name. Now when dying grasses veil earth from the sky in one last pale wave, as autumn dies to bring winter back, and then the spring, we who die ourselves can peel back another kind of veil that hangs among us like thick smoke. Tonight at last I feel it shake. I feel the nights stretching away thousands long behind the days, till they reach the darkness where all of me is ancestor. I turn my hand and feel a touch move with me, and when I brush my young mind across another, I have met my mother’s mother. (Prose) Halcyon for the Season by Deanne Quarrie

A bird for this season is the Kingfisher, also known as the Halcyon. The Kingfisher is associated in Greek myth with the Winter Solstice. There were fourteen “halcyon days” in every year, seven of which fell before the winter solstice, seven after; peaceful days when the sea was smooth as a pond and the hen-halcyon built a floating nest and hatched out her young. She also had another habit, that of carrying her dead mate on her back over the sea and mourning him with a plaintive cry. Pliny reported that the halcyon was rarely seen and then only at the winter and summer solstices and at the setting of the Pleiades. She was therefore, a manifestation of the Moon-Goddess who was worshiped at the two solstices as the Goddess of Life in Death and Death in Life and, when the Pleiades set, she sent the sacred king his summons for death. Kingfishers are typically stocky, short-legged birds with large heads and large, heron-like beaks. They feed primarily on fish, hovering over the water or watching intently from perches and they plunge headlong into the water to catch their prey. Their name, Alcedinidae, stems from classical Greek mythology. Alcyone, Daughter of the Wind, was so distraught when her husband perished in a shipwreck that she threw herself into the sea. Both were then transformed into kingfishers and roamed the waves together. When they nested on the open sea, the winds remained calm and the weather balmy. Still another Alcyone, Queen of Sailing, was the mystical leader of the seven Pleiades. The heliacal rising of the Pleiades in May marked the beginning of the navigational year and their setting marked the end. Alcyone, as Sea Goddess protected sailors from rocks and rough weather. The bird, halcyon continued for centuries to be credited with the magical power of allaying storms. Shakespeare refers to this legend in this passage from Hamlet: Some say that ever ‘gainst that season comes Wherein our Saviour’s birth is celebrated, The bird of dawning singeth all night long; And then, they say, no spirit can walk abroad; The nights are wholesome; then no planets strike, No fairy takes, nor witch hath power to charm, So hallow’d and so gracious is the time. Hamlet, I, i 157 When I was a young mother, and my children were little, we lived in a house that had a creek in the back yard. There were small trees along the far bank of this creek and every day, a kingfisher would sit in the branches overlooking the creek. Sometimes he sat there very quietly for a very long time. Suddenly he would dive from his perch straight into the creek. Every time he did he came out and up into the air with a fish. It gave me great pleasure to watch him from my kitchen window. I love birds. I love learning about their habits because it teaches me ways of being that are closer to nature. I love drawing birds as well. When I was a young and more able, I was an avid bird watcher, out with my friends hoping for a sight never seen before. I love the story of the kingfisher and her connection to the Halcyon Days of the Winter Solstice. It is for most of us the busiest time of year. Whether it is for the Solstice or Christmas (often both) we are in a frenzy to get things done, making sure everything is just right and perfect. I celebrate the Winter Solstice. As a priestess, my days right now are very busy creating ritual. It is at the Solstice that many passage rites are happening with the women I work with. And of course, I celebrate with my family with our magical Yule Log each year. But I try to honor those seven days before and the seven days after by trying to have the frantic moments before the Halcyon Days begin and then even when busy, hold the peace and calm of that beautiful smooth sea in my mind. Peace and love and joy surrounding the Winter Solstice make it perfect. May the Peace of a Halcyon Sea be yours in this Solstice Season. Do hold the image of that little kingfisher in mind! Imbolc/Early Spring – a Season of Uncertainty by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

Traditionally the Seasonal transition of Imbolc/Early Spring, celebrated in early February in the Northern Hemisphere, and in early August in the Southern Hemisphere, has been a time of nurturing the new life that is beginning to show itself, around us and within. It is a time of committing one’s self to the new life and inspiration – in the garden, in the soul, and in the Cosmos. We may include in our celebrations and contemplations of this Season the beginnings of the new young Cosmos as She was, that time in our cosmic story when She was only a billion years old and galaxies were forming; and also the new which has continually emerged throughout the eons, and is ever coming forth. The flame of being, as it has been imagined by many cultures, within and around, is to be protected and nurtured: the new being requires dedication and attention. In the early stages of its advent, there is nothing certain about its staying power and growth: it may flicker and be vulnerable. There may be uncertainties of various kinds. There is risk and resistance to coming into being. The Universe itself knew resistance to its expansion when it encountered gravitation in our very beginnings, in the primordial Flaring Forth[i]. The unfolding of the Universe was never without creative tension. The Universe knows it daily, in every moment: and we participate in this creative tension of our place of being. Urge to Be budding forth Imbolc/Early Spring can be a time of remembering personal vulnerabilities, feeling them and accepting them, but remaining resolute in birthing and tending of the new, listening for and responding to the Urge to Be[ii]of the Creative Universe within. Brian Swimme has said (quoting cultural anthropologist A.L. Kroeber) that the destiny of the human is not “bovine placidity” but the highest degree of tension that can be creatively born[iii]. many flames of being, strengthening each other These times are filled with creative tension, collectively and for most, personally as well; there is much resistance, yet there is promise of so much good energy arising. We may be witness to both. This Season of Imbolc/Early Spring may encourage attention, intention and dedication to strengthening well-being: in self, and in the relational communal context, and opening to our direct immersion in the Well of Creativity. We may be strengthened with the joining of hands, as well as the listening within to the sacred depths, in ceremonial circle at this time. (Essay 3) Making the Gynocentric Case: Mago, the Great Goddess of East Asia, and Her Tradition Magoism by Helen Hwang

[Editor’s note: Numbers of endnotes differ from the original ones in the article] Claiming the Budoji (Epic of the Emblem City) as a Principal Text of Magoism The Budoji (Epic of the Emblem City) stands out from other sources for its systemic and refined mytho-historical account of Old Magoism. Alleged to have been written in between the late fourth and early fifth century of Silla Korea (57 BCE-918 CE), the Budoji is the Sillan testimony to the history of Budo (Emblem City), a replica of Mago’s Citadel. It is a book that summons ancient Koreans to remember the glorious history of their Magoist ancestors particularly Budo, better known as Dangun Choson Korea (2333 BEC-232 BEC). Budo’s construction and administration in East Asia for nearly two millennia are attributed to the leadership of Imgeom or Dangun. She is the third of the triad sovereigns of Old Magoism after Hanin and Hanung. Designating the civilization of Budo as a direct successor of its previous civilization Sinsi (Divine Market) attributed to the leadership of Hanung, the Budoji traces the Magoist pedigree of pre-patriarchal civilizations ultimately back to Mago and her paradisiacal community, Mago’s Citadel.[i] Composed of thirty-three chapters, its epical narrative is replete with unheard but resonant concepts and symbols such as cosmic music, triad, parthenogenesis, mountain paradisiacal community, genealogy, and so on. Among others, the Budoji unleashes one most fascinating cosmogonic account yet-to-be-known, the story of Mago’s beginning.[ii] Mago, emerged by the cosmic music alongside the stars in the primordial time, began her procreation. Then she initiates the natural process of self-creation. She had her offspring to procreate and asked them to administer the paradisiacal community in Mago’s Citadel. She is the cosmic being who listens to the rise and fall of the cosmic music. The primary task of Mago’s community was to produce Earthly musical resonance that corresponds with the music of the universe. The sonic balance between the universe and the Earth is absolutely essential to the survival and prosperity of the earthly community.[iii] The Budoji not only makes it possible to recognize a large corpus of transnational primary sources as coherent within the context of Magoism but also enables the researcher to understand erosion, variation, and mutation wrought on individual data in the course of history. Budoji’s mytho-historical framework is particularly crucial in assessing the large number of folkloric and topological data that are otherwise seen anomalous or corrupted. For example, the stories that Mago lived in a rock or Mago carried large boulders on her limbs and built megalithic structures find resonance in Budoji’s narratives. Its accounts concerning rocks and landmasses are too complex to present here. Some examples are: Mago began her act of creation by moving and dropping a heavenly landmass and into heavenly water; Magoist sovereigns became rocks that made resonating sounds upon death. In short, Magoism animates pre-Chinese history of East Asia otherwise labeled as “primitive societies.” It entertains the idea that animism and shamanism are not isolated practices but the older religious forms of Magoism.

(In fact, my life hurled me onto a labyrinthine path.) Mago is not a mere subject of my study. Or, study is not a mere brain activity for me. Mago has been the answer to my intellectual/spiritual quests. And I am to carve out my own destiny. Studying Magoism has become a way of life to me. Magoism is the term that I coined to name the mytho-historical-cultural context in which Mago is venerated. Assessing a large body of source materials that I documented, I learned that Magoism is one of the most comprehensive contexts that can explain East Asian civilizations as a whole. It feels right that reconstructing Magoism, the method that I employed in studying Mago, is the reason why I study Mago. Ever since I began to contemplate the topic of Mago for study in 2000, I have visited Korea, my native land, almost annually and undertook such activities as documentation, presentation, trips, and field research for the purpose of measuring the landscape of Magoism. In enacting those projects, I have worked with a variety of groups and individuals including feminists, scholars, friends, and the general public. For the last three years, I have organized various sizes of pilgrimages to near and far places with Koreans. Those experiences have gradually led me to the unfolding mystery of Magoist spiritual/intellectual reality. That said, it was my honor and privilege to organize and lead the very first intercontinental Mago Pilgrimage to Korea from June 6 to June 19 in 2013. This pilgrimage made a memorable landmark in Magoism. About a decade ago, Mago was hardly known among goddess people in the West. And the situation was not so far different from that in Korea. At that time, I was writing my Ph.D. dissertation on Mago from a multi-disciplinary perspective, not knowing what was forthcoming. The Mago Pilgrimage envisioned the remarkable change!
(Mago Pilgrimage 3) Seonam-sa (Seonam Temple), Suncheon, South Jeolla Korea by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang

Seonsam-sa, located in Suncheon City, South Jeolla Province, is one of many ancient Buddhist temples in Korea. It is among the seven Korean Buddhist temples designated as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites this year. I visited Seonam-sa during the Mago Pilgrimage to Korea in 2014. The name, Seonsam-sa (仙巖寺 Seonam Temple), drew my attention immediately for the first two characters “seon (read sun)” and “am (read ahm)” of its title convey Magoism. It remains esoteric that Seon-am (仙巖 Precipice of Seon) is an alternative of Mago-am (Precipice of Mago) also known as Nogo-am (Precipice of Nogo). “Nogo” (老姑 Primordial Goddess) is a popular epithet, which is often interchangeably used with “Mago” in place-names and folktales. That said, the character “seon or xian (仙)” refers to Magoists rather than Daoist Immortals, a topic that requires another space to explicate. Fork traditions have preserved its Magoist meaning (Mago or Magoist) in place-names and stories. One prominent exmaple is “Mago Seonnyeo” to convey a Maogist Female Seon. Below I use it as Seon without transliteration. It is rarely recognized by the public that Seonam-sa is imbued with Magoist mytho-historical-cultural memories. This is not to say that Korean Buddhist temples are as a whole independent of Magoism. I have discussed, among others, that the main hall (Daeung-jeon) of many Korean Buddhist temples is dedicated to Goma, the Magoist shaman queen founder of Danguk (3898-2333 BCE), also known as Daeung (Great Hero), as follows: Korean Buddhism is characterized by its idiosyncratic feature of Daeung-jeon (Hall of the Great Hero), its main building, in most Buddhist temples. That Goma is enshrined in Daeung-jeon accounts for the Magoist root of Korean Buddhism.[1] Seonsam-sa has some intriguing unorthodox Buddhist characters. While its foundation is debated to be in the mid 6th century by Ado Hwasang in 592 or the second half of the 9th century by Monk Doseon (827-898), we have stories about Monk Doseon , the alleged founder. Monk Doseon, according to the story, had a revelation from the Heavenly Ruler of the Holy Mother (聖母天王) of Mt. Jiri who told him “If you establish three Amsas (Precipice Temples), Three Hans will unite and there will be no wars.” Doseon founded the three precipice temples known as Seonam (Seon Precipice), Unam (Cloud Precipice), and Yongam (Drago Precipice).[2] Three Hans (Samhan) refers to the descendants of Old Joseon (ca. 2333-232 BCE), the Magoist people of ancient Korean states including Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla, Gaya and their remnants who sought to restore the bygone rule of Magoist confederacies.[3] In short, the foundation story of Seonamsa reflects the mytho-history of Magoism. Also intriguing is the fact that Seonam-sa has Seungseon-gyo (Bridge of the Ascended Seon) and Gangseon-ru (Pavilion of the Descended Seon), which are evocative of such Magoist place-names as Mangsoen-gyo (Bridge of Anticipated Seon) and Biseon-dae (Point of Ascending Seon), to name a few. In addition, Seonam-sa is, among numerous halls and shrines, noted for Sansin-gak (Mountain Deity Pavilion) and Samseong-gak (Three Sages Pavilion), the indigenous faith practices that are incorporated in a Buddhist temple. We were enrolled in Seonam-sa’s Temple Stay. Later I detected that the monk who guided us was unenthused about our interests in indigenous elements of Seonam-sa. Out of honesty, he mentioned that Seonam-sa needed to purge itself of indigenous shrines. It was sad to hear that but I could see where he was coming from. It appeared that monks were not all in agreement with him, however. Our visit to Seonsam-sa seemed to end with a somewhat uneasy stroll with the monk. Lo and behold! As we were about to leave the temple, we ran into a female Buddhist novice who took interest in our queries. Together with her, we hurriedly payed visit to Sansin-gak and a couple of indigenous shines located in the backside of the main sectors. While on a brief leisurely stroll with our new guide, she finally led us to an unlikely place, the unseen heart of Seanam-sa by the public. She showed us the place wherein monks gather to begin Dong-angeo (Winter Retreat), an annual three-month-long winter medication practice. Inside this ordinary-looking Korean traditional house was a traditional style kitchen stove. Above the big iron cast cooking pot was hung a tablet that reads “Nammu Jowangsinwi,” which means “Take refuge in Jowang Deity who is present here.” Faith in Jowang Deity was still alive among Buddhist monks!!! Jowang-sin or Jowang Halmi, the Kitchen Goddess or the Hearth Goddess, is one of the many indigenous Goddesses of Korea. It is known today that she was enshrined in the kitchen and widely venerated by women in the past. Today, She is still worshipped in Muism (Korean Shamanism) as the deity of fire, children, and wealth of the household. (Meet Mago Contributor) Helen Hye-Sook Hwang.
