At El Santuario de Chimayó
pilgrims pin notes to the cool adobe church walls.
A mother’s plea: return my daughter to me.
Another’s prayer: heal my son’s cancer.
Supplications stitched together
with pain and mud and straw.
Yellow candlelight flickering on the cold steel shafts
of rubber-tipped crutches propped against the walls.
A reminder—there are many things
we cannot explain.
A well (el pocito) of dirt in a dirt floor.
Votive candles singeing the crisp air.
Men and women kneeling
in wooden benches, praying:
Holy dirt.
Holy dust.
We come from dust.
We return to dust.
This holiness that cures,
this holy dirt, as liquid and glistening
as healing waters.
This grit a magic,
a promise of power great enough
to heal every human pain.
I dip my fingers into the curve of earth,
cup some of the sacred dirt into my hands,
rub it between my palms, coating every pore.
I cup my hand to my heart, close my eyes
cover my face and whisper
Dea Madre, mia Dea
Please, please
Let it be so.
Author’s Note: El Santuario de Chimayó is from my new book of poetry, Awakening (Pearlsong Press 2026), which launched on November 1, 2026. This collection of poems is about healing from trauma. Awakening takes readers on a journey of loss, resilience, redemption, and, ultimately, reclamation. The poems speak to the need to embrace the healing journey, seek solace in the power of nature, and accept the love and support of others along the way. Ultimately, it celebrates the triumph of coming home to oneself in order to be fully present to joy and all that life has to offer.

Oh, this poem is so deeply moving – dirt/soil the end-beginning…
