Photo of a holy card of Santa Roslby Maria Famà
Santa Rosalia five hundred years forgotten
until a shepherd on Monte Pellegrino
in 162 a time of plague in Palermo
met a beautiful spirit girl
who told him
“I am Rosalia Sinibaldi
You will find my bones in that cave
Gather them up bring them to Palermo
Tell them to parade them through the street
with marching bands playing good music
If you do this for me
I will save you all from the plague
I promise it will never strike Palermo again
I promise I will always protect Palermo
And so it was done
And so it is still done
Every July
Rosalia’s bones in a silver urn are
paraded through the streets
with music singing fireworks
a time of joy in Palermo honoring la Santuzza
Palermo’s little saint Santa Rosalia
the strong determined rich girl
who nine hundred years ago
refused to marry her father’s choice for her
hiked up Monte Pellegrino would not come down
her spiritual hunger her spiritual thirst
too great to live an ordinary life
Rosalia stayed in her cave for forty years
talking to God communing with Nature
befriending sheep, goats, birds, bats
she prayed and prayed and prayed
Generations passed centuries passed
Rosalia was forgotten
until she appeared offering her deal
She kept her promise
helping to keep the plague away
helping Garibaldi and the Redshirts free Sicily
helping the Allies free Sicily
helping all who ask
Santa Rosalia helps busloads of tourists
who visit her shrine baroque façade in front of her cave
She helps the brides trekking up the mountain
to place their bouquets at her statue
She helps those who are troubled or need a favor or
need to talk over a problem with her
in gratitude many bring ex-votos
tiny golden arms, legs, eyes, hearts, brains
hang on the shrine’s walls
Santa Rosalia,
headstrong teenager hermit woman
Santa Rosalia,
Sicilian heroine,
your fierce fervor
blesses your fierce city.
