these mountains
still clothed in their ancient raiment of trees
breathe a silent peace from a passing epoch
wild creatures rule their rocky slopes
untamed as yet
by a relentlessly advancing " civilisation "

these mountains
but a twinkling of time ago
were home to a native people
who alone knew the secrets of their timeless dreaming
who walked with dignity and reverence
within the sacred body of our earth mother

these mountains
source of primordial wisdom
speak of the unceasing rhythm of evolution
the indestructibility of this earth
and the dispensability of species
whose parasitism threatens her very existence

Author’s Note: This poem is an acknowledgement of the prior long presence of First Nations peoples

  1. Powerful poem spilling unpalatable truth…. I had never thought of humans as parasites before but I will from now on. First Nations Peoples and Indigenous Peoples throughout the world who remain intact are the exception…The latter understand they belong to the land and these peoples tell stories about what is coming.
