Lakshmi inspires us to savor the abundance

with which we are blessed in even our bleakest moments.

Lakshmi, goddess of wealth, prosperity, and generosity, is as old as time and so ubiquitous in Hindu culture that she requires no temples or shrines in which to be worshipped. Instead, she is worshipped daily in Hindu homes and is never far away, as she exists in every form of material or spiritual wealth, from the grains harvested in the autumn to the pearls and rare shells of the sea; from the coins and jewels of commerce to the sacred cows who offer daily life-giving milk; and from the newborns who gladden the hearts of expectant families to the educational riches that eventually shape young minds and souls. Seated upon her lotus flower, the symbol for spiritual enlightenment, and accompanied by elephants that spray water on her to symbolize that continuous effort paired with wisdom and purity can lead to prosperity, Lakshmi is a symbol of all the spiritual and material richness that exists in the world to be savored, cultivated, and honored.
