(Quilt Art) The Syrian Eye Mother Goddess and her Daughter by Kaarina Kailo

Kaarina Kailo, The Syrian Eye Mother Goddess and her Daughter, 2020, 45 x 50cm

With the Ancient Votive Eye Statues one reaches to the beginning of civilization ca. 3700–3500 B.C. when the first cities sprang up in Mesopotamia and the near East. I  recreated a  figurine which is one of thousands of mother-daughter statues found in Tell Brak, a vast mound and one of humanity’s first cities. It was built around the same time as Ur and Sumer.  Patriarchy privileges images of fathers and sons, and my quilt art seeks to redress the balance by honoring also the mother-daughter bond of matrilineal cultures.

  1. Such a beautiful piece of craft! I haven’t heard of the Syrian eye goddess before, but it just occurred to me that the eye motif is very similar to those found on the Pict stone carvings in Scotland. Which gives weight to Gimbutas perhaps.

  2. How wonderful to read about the Syrian Eye Goddess. I haven’t known about her before, but now she becomes part of my research and my devotions. I will send you an article about an eye quilt collaborative project soon, that I began in November. Oh, this eye goddess is exactly what I needed today.
