(Poem) Sarasvatīkanthabharana: Sarasvatī’s Necklace by Susan Hawthorne

so you who are to blame for all the world’s ills

you who dance in ever expanding spirals
turning the universe on a point

you who speak as if you are the world’s know-all

you whose smallest lapse becomes earth’s fault line

you who sweep the sea’s tides into our arms

you whose hair is a chaos of cunning

you who cut the layers of learning with your eye

you whose boat hides behind clouds or is starlit

you for whom we sing a never-ending cycle of song

you for whom the snakes and bees dance

your sacraments are our lives

your river is a necklace of ponds

you moon-carrier, sky-wanderer

no weapon is greater than you

notes

Sarasvatī is the Hindu goddess of knowledge, writing, music, art and wisdom. Her name comes from saras which can mean both speech and pooling water and vati, she who possesses.
kantha: means necklace.
