(Art Essay) Feminism, Fiber And Cotton Riots Are In My Blood by Claire Dorey

Art “Feminism and Fiber” by Claire Dorey “I’m pulling at the thread of my own tapestry.” “I’m pulling the thread that binds so I can unravel my own history.” There is a rumor there was a suffragette in the family, although no one seems to know who she was, because this is oral history and she wasn’t part of the supposed, legitimate, male blood line. Our female histories have been erased by patriarchal structuring, glorifying the ‘father god’ and in turn all ‘fathers.’ Meanwhile mothers and female lineages remain in the shadows. Researching the Goddess may lead to questions about our own eclipsed mother-lines. Who are we descended from? Why are we, the way we are? It is my belief we cannot be whole when we only know the male half of our histories, the half designed to keep women in the dark, subservient. I graduated with a degree in Feminism and Fiber Art and wondered what I would ever do with such an education. Feminist Fiber Art is an artistic movement, rooted in the 1960s and 70s, that is currently experiencing a resurgence, finding recognition in major galleries across the world. Using fiber and textiles, and techniques such as felting, quilting, knotting and weaving, Fiber Art set out to challenge gender roles in art, whilst elevating the status of craft, traditionally viewed as a female domain, and therefore seen as less than by the male dominated art world. Only recently have I appreciated the privilege of being immersed in the dominion of the feminist Fiber Artists, as they shaped our creative and political mind-scape, including: Judy Chicago who laid the dinner table for feminists and the Goddess, challenging patriarchy stitch by stitch; Bauhaus weaver, Annie Albers, whose geometrical creativity annoyed Hitler so much he called her work “degenerate;” postwar Polish, constructivist, Fiber Artist, Magdalena Abakanowicz, who examined existential themes such as the anonymity of the human condition under Communism. The theme of anonymity resonates, because for most of history “anonymous was a woman.” Fiber Art has always been political. Sewing, weaving and spinning gave women an income and financial independence, so they were mistresses of their own destiny. The Three Fates: Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos, spinning the thread of life, measuring it, setting destiny, then cutting it upon death, illustrate how women once held spiritual dominion over the web of life. Allegories can be made to cutting the umbilical cord, and the powers held by midwives, herbalists, shamans and abortionists. The word “spinster” derived from “women who spin,” now a derogatory term for unmarried woman, or those judged to be past marriageable age, illustrating how women’s independence and age were demonized. But we know all this, and what does any of it, have to do with my personal journey? Tracing one mother-line, back to the 18th C, I discover I am descended from Lancashire Cotton Mill owners, where, in the mid-19th century, the suffragette movement in England began. Grassroots activism, the fight for women’s right to vote, started in kitchen table meetings, in working class women’s homes, eventually spreading to women of all classes. Some women peacefully petitioned parliament, others engaged in militant, direct action, and when imprisoned, went on hunger strike. As Jill Liddington says in her essay Radical Suffragists [1], “[ ] they earned almost equal pay with men! They were well-organized articulate women – yet all remained disenfranchised.” I’m starting to see how it is likely there was a suffragette in the family. The fight for women’s rights, that started at the heart of my ancestor’s community, explains why my female ancestors pushed for a high level of education, at a time when most women were being groomed for marriage, and/or the factory floor. Knowledge brings freedom. Feminism, Fiber and Cotton Riots [2] are in my blood. The role of women weavers fighting for their rights in the English Cotton Towns [2] has illuminated why, Ancient Egyptian Goddess Neith, was a Goddess of warfare, weaving and destiny. Substituting the word “war” for “fighting for rights and survival” makes Her more relatable. Neith’s symbols include crossed arrows and shield; the ankh (symbol of life); the was-sceptre (symbol of power, dominion, and authority); and a weaving shuttle. It appears weaving and female power have been entwined throughout history. There is a tear in our consciousness that needs stitching. Feminist Weaver Goddesses exist in various mythologies, representing different aspects of female power and creativity. Athena was a Goddess of wisdom, warfare, and weaving. Arachne was a mortal woman who challenged Athena to a weaving contest. She was transformed into a spider, after she hung herself (think spider hanging from a thread), so she could weave for all eternity (remember Athena was a war Goddess who didn’t take weaving challenges lightly). The Hopi, Spider Grandmother, co creator of the Earth, is associated with weaving and medicine [3]. In Celtic mythology, Orchil weaves connections between the Earth and stars. Moon and star Goddess Arianrhod weaves the tapestry of life. Brigid is a Goddess of women’s arts, brewing and midwifery. Brigantia is associated with weaving, fire, healing, and warfare. Nimue is a weaver of spells and Elaine is associated with weaving as a means to transformation. In Greek mythology it is Ariadne’s thread that helps Thesues escape the Labyrinth. Ariandne is associated with weaving and storytelling and this is why she has become a feminist icon for guiding us out of the labyrinth of our unknown past, so we can piece together our hidden histories. Fiber Art is about heritage. The political NOW merges with the potential for reviving the suppressed, divine, female strength and creativity, honored by Goddess cultures of the past. The narrative is braided: Suppression, resistance and inheritance entwine. The word “suffrage” is not rooted in the word “suffering,” although perhaps it should be. “Suffrage” comes from the Latin word “suffragium” meaning “vote.” My studies in Feminism and Fiber Art were cerebral and sculptural, political and practical. And I was shocked but not surprised, for I am a woman with the Sight.” — Journal Entry, September 2025 𖦹 It’s November 2023 and I’m womb-deep in hypnosis, reconciling for the umpteenth time the pain of a paltry matrilineal inheritance. I had lost my mother to religion, and the ones before her to time and silence. ‘I’ve chosen you to be my mother.’ whispered my grandmother Janet as I crossed back into the land of consciousness. The words rolled around in my mind like a tongue playing with a lollipop as I stared absentmindedly at my two new plants, Alice the Hibiscus and Harriet the Honeysuckle, thinking it would happen years from now. Thirteen moons later, on the night my baby was born, all the planets gathered to celebrate his arrival — the first night of a seven-day planetary parade. And while it took my son 19 hours to arrive earthside, it would take another 12 months before I even crowned. Down the Spiraled Lens In My Field: veils, revelation, owls, labyrinths, feminine processes of provision I’m two months postpartum. ‘Veils’ and ‘revelation’ have entered my consciousness, followed by an incessant appearance of owls — in social media posts, neighborhood walks, a shungite figurine from a friend, a forgotten oracle card in the back of a closet. ‘Wise women and owls have walked together hand-in-wing for millennia, the words for both ‘bird’ and ‘witch’ are the same in various languages. The owl’s vision is keen in all conditions. Other notable characteristics of the owl are its noiseless flight and its ability to turn its head almost all the way around on its shoulders.’ — Barbara G Walker1 Ah, the first phase of initiation for my first semester of motherhood. I meditated on the wide dilated eyes of the owl, sensing this was not the time to seek but to be still. The more I sat, the more shadows came forward to be witnessed. 𖦹 How much of me is a performance to myself? This question that clenched my consciousness blinded me with the sudden light of everything. I saw how dependent I was on particular environments to access certain states of being, how I approached my womb as a fleshy Zoltar, how I rushed to articulate succinct and polished meanings from my experiences rather than let them unravel and suspend me. I realized how often I had put myself into containers and shrink rather than make friends with my own scary vastness — submitting to the good girl suit I had long outgrown. She was credentialing me, her coursework an ancestral transmission that was my son. This was a shift from my beloved study and research to ordination by sacred endowment. Touching and tuning bodymind’s finest flickers of gnosis, I used all sets of my eyes: hair, hands, nipples, womb, feet — to stare into the soul of my surroundings. The less I sought to know, the more I (re)cognized. Revelations arrived, sudden and profound. 𖦹 I observe [scrutinize?] these naked curves in the mirror, trying to scope out my maiden body underneath. To think that I actually thought I’d be able to birth a baby and leave no evidence of such is very maiden and vain of me, yes. The word ‘humble’ comes from the Latin root ‘humus’, meaning ‘earth’. I think of this when I gaze at myself in the mirror and I know She’s doing me a favor, lifting me from the airs of delusion and gently placing me back on solid ground, pointing me in the direction of what’s real. I study the scars, my belly and thighs forever branded. Scar tissue has greater tensile capacity than that of untouched skin, able to handle greater blows than it’s naive counterpart. This reminds me of the structural nature of feminine becoming, which is more about the dense work of integration than it is about the airier work of letting go. I look at these little fleshy stripes, these fractals. I think of lightening, veins, tree branches and rivers. I think about how Nature repeats Herself and how I am just an emanation of Mother Divine. I glance at my baby and wonder how did I ever have the audacity to not want to appear changed by the life changing? And that’s how I found God in my stretch marks. 𖦹 It’s early spring and I’m at the annual mystic fair walking a chalk labyrinth, which led me to the movie by Jim Henson and its corresponding book by A.C.H Smith. Like the owls, labyrinths bombard my consciousness: first an article on Ariadne in a 1988 issue of SageWoman magazine, then Ariadne’s Thread by Shekhinah Mountainwater, followed by Nicole Schwab’s The Heart of the Labyrinth. ‘The pagan tradition of walking the labyrinth as an initiatory death/rebirth ritual was a procedural transmission, representing pilgrimage to the Holy Land and back again, designed to decompose and regenerate consciousness.’ — Barbara G Walker2 There are no dead ends and no shorts cuts in the labyrinth, an apt metaphor for my walk with Her. [Editor’s Note: This excerpt series is from Asherah: Roots of the Mother Tree ed by Claire Dorey, Janet Rudolph, Pat Daly, and Trista Hendren (Girl God Books, 2025).] Asherah Lady of the Sea: Her Cultural Memory Claire Dorey [Author’s note: Because translations are under copyright, even though the ancient texts aren’t, I’ll be describing passages rather than quoting them. This piece isn’t intended to be a scholastic paper; it is a bystander’s observation.] With the flick of a quill, Biblical scribes cast the Divine Female out of mythology, just as Eve and Adam were cast out of the Garden of Eden. Scholars observe that evolutions of mythology from the Ugaritic texts, dating from 1400 BCE, written centuries before the Bible, exist within the Old Testament. But what of Asherah? Are there traces of Her in biblical passages, other than those calling for Her destruction? We can imagine how Asherah’s existence challenged the authoritarian aloneness of the godhead because the patriarchal scribes slash her with their pens. Even though it is fragmented, the Baal Cycle paints a portrait of a supreme and stable Mother Goddess. Journeying through the texts, it appears the cultural memory of the Mother Goddess Asherah lives on and may also be present in the New Testament. Asherah, Athirat (in Ugarit), Elat, qdš “holiness,” qnyt ỉlm “Progenitress of the Gods,” “Fisherman Lady of the Sea,” Mother Goddess in the heavens, Queen Mother in the ethereal, glittering palace, with her consort and co-creator, the grey bearded, fertility god El, command a pantheon of deities. Asherah and El represent a divine pairing of female and male energies. It appears the Grey Beard archetype, El represents, became the benign face of monotheistic, patriarchal rule, once the Divine Female archetype was dropped. Asherah has seventy children forming a pantheon of gods, described as sons in the translation, but there are references to “ewe-lamb goddesses,” “cow-goddesses,” and “chair goddesses.” There are many deities in the Ugarit pantheon. For my purposes I’m focusing on a few: Rider of the clouds, storm god of rain, hurricanes and thunderstorms, Ba’al (Hadad); personification of the deified sea, Yamm; torch of the gods, sun Goddess Shapash; god of wisdom Kothar; warrior and harbinger of destruction, Goddess Anat. There are traces of storm god Ba’al in the vitriolic God of the Old Testament, who sent apocalyptic floods to destroy his “creation.” God’s battles for religious supremacy [over Asherah?] may mirror Ba’al vying for supremacy in the Baal Cycle, describing a cosmic battle between Ba’al and Yamm. Aided by Anat, Ba’al is victorious, knocking Yamm off his throne. Later, Ba’al battles Mot, god of death, who devours him. I’m not covering this part of the story here. Casting my nets through just a few texts I’m catching more than fish. I’m catching twists and mirroring! Nets There is a passage in the Baal Cycle where Asherah asks the “fisherman of Asherah of the Sea” to cast his net into the sea, into El’s beloved Yamm (the sea as deity), into the depths of El (her consort). At the Lake of Galilee, Jesus asks fisherman Simon Peter to, “Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.” (Luke 5:4 KJV) Ecclesiastes 9:12 talks of “evil nets.” I’m wondering if “evil nets” refers to nets cast by pagans and Asherah devotees to “catch” disciples. A Feast of Fish One fragment describes “Lady Asherah of the Sea” ceremonially descaling fish, throwing their skins into the deep, then heating a skillet upon coals, in preparation for a feast and possibly making offerings. In John 21:9, Jesus makes breakfast for his disciples, “[ ] they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.” In Luke 9:16, Jesus prepares sacred fish for the 5,000, by blessing them. Through the metaphor of fish, Asherah’s role as nurturer, provider and guru emerges. From my humble viewpoint, the role of Jesus, as a manifestation during the Age of Pisces, symbolized by the fish, embodies the very same female energy Asherah inspires, including kindness, compassion and love. Followers of Goddess know the Vesica Pisces (meaning “fish bladder”), a symbol the Divine Feminine, is a portal to knowledge. Open your eyes and you will see. In an attempt to rebalance the chaotic masculine energy dominating the Old Testament, has the cultural memory of Asherah, representing the calm, nurturing presence of the Mother Goddess, permeated into the character of Jesus? In the Bible, the fish metaphor is existential. References include: multitudes of fish and healed waters (Ezekiel 47:9); man having dominion over fish of the sea (Genesis 1:26); asking for fish, receiving a serpent (Luke 11:11)… and more… Did the Bible defer to Asherah of the Sea as a source of wisdom, reflecting her wisdom within its wisdom? Fishermen, Followers and Guiding Stars Jesus allegorizes “fishermen” to inspire his disciples. “And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Mark 1:17 KJV) One passage in the Ugaritic texts describes Qudšu-wa-Amrur, Asherah’s “fisherman,” saddling a donkey for Her. He lifts Asherah upon the donkey’s back, leading Her like a star from the front. Asherah’s “fisherman,” a minor, luminary god, was Her messenger and male attendant. Qudšu meaning “holiness” was a Canaanite name for Asherah. It’s hard not to draw comparisons with the popular image of Mary riding a donkey towards Bethlehem. When Armur leads like a star, it is hard not to see similarities with the three Magi following the Star of Bethlehem. “Fishers of men” and “Asherah’s fisherman” allude to loyal spiritual devotion. Mary, a Drop in the Sea One title Mary, Mother of Jesus, has been known by is stilla maris, “a drop of the sea.”[1] The Hebrew name Maryam (Miryam, Miriam) may have been derived from biblical words, mar “drop” (Isaiah 40:15) and yam “sea.”[2] Once seen it is hard to unsee Ugarit god of the sea, Yamm, within the name “Maryam.” Once seen it is hard to unsee “Asherah Lady of the Sea” within the name “Mary Our Lady of the Sea.” Both Asherah and Mary embody the watery, sea-space of the …
(Essay) Sacred Sound Healing: Goddess as Music by Jillian Burnett

This Image is the word “SHAKTI” meaning FEMALE DIVINE SPIRITUAL POWER AND AUTHORITY in sanskrit, written in the BONJI/Siddham buddhist scripts used in Japan. For millennia humankind has looked to the celestial spheres as a place of divine music, to a place beyond this world where tones exist in the great void of deep space. In my own way, I too expect that near the black hole is a beautiful symphony of slow tones that move beyond time. Throughout mythology, religious archetypes and cultures of societies everywhere on earth, sounds are ritualized, recognized, formulated and placed within the context of sacredness. Music is recognized as divine. In some cases, as expressed by the choirs of angels, and in others, as in the cases of the Vedic religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism, music is recognized as a form of deity. This paper will express some of the aspects of the divine feminine as she is recognized musically. My main focus will be in the Buddhist and Hindu religious pantheon, and my reference is both Vedic and tantric; the Kali Sahasranama stotram. Aspects of providence include ability to heal all illnesses, to move from all perceived negative states, and to transcend all concerns of body and mind as well as suffering in all of its forms. For those who maintain a goddess centered lifestyle, they recognize the divinity of the cosmic mother, the earth mother, the spirit mother, and the Goddess in all forms as she appears. To connect with Goddess further, I will begin to briefly explain cosmic sound healing. Considering that all that exists in the perceivable universe is energy and matter in the great oneness and apparent duality, the expression of existence of all beings and all phenomena includes sounds and music. Music is frequency and time, along with pauses and movement and layers increasing in aspects of volume and speed and varying with pulses and rhythms and forms of sequencing tones that we call melodies. And we think of them as sad or happy oftentimes, or both mixed and we apply ideas and concepts to them, to further complicate their existence. But, as beauteous as they are, they also are waves of sound. Sounds travel in wave forms. And solid matter, solid mass, is inversely proportional to light energy, as we understand particles and waves in their solid and electromagnetic states. All states of all existence are known as Goddess. And when she takes the form of sound, those are the sacred vibrations which are known to have the power to heal. Fundamentally, I examine closely the Sri Kalisahasranama stotram, whereupon the one thousand names of the Great Mother Goddess are contained. It is beyond the scope of this short assayance to express every name ever given across all centuries and all languages on Earth; but these names are meaningfully expressed to me in Sanskrit, as I know them through Hindi, which is known as the ‘language of song.’ The language of song derives from its mother Sanskrit where these names of the Goddess descend down the ages handed down from teacher to student across millennia. For those interested in cosmology; Goddess is literally in the form of vibration. When she exists in sound form, some call that bija. Bijarupa is one of her names which suggests that she takes the form or rupa of sound itself. So, as each stellar configuration and cosmic object has a frequency and a sound identity, the Goddess is expressed in that particular form or configuration, and it is then that she is identified with a unique bija. The word bija additionally means seed. Ideally this seed is the tonic, the modal center of the song. And Goddess loves songs. The cosmos is a divine musical ordering, each planet and celestial body sending a unique frequency which reaches earth as sound and light both. For those interested in the meditative practice, I have conducted sadhanas (extensive rituals) and pujas (prayer offerings) always with sound and music as part of the vehicle for energy movement. At this time I have three means whereupon the sound form of Goddess is deeply ingrained in my practice and consciousness. In one way, I listen to the tones, and achieve samadhi, what is called rigpa or perhaps gnosis to the western spiritualists. This possibly can be expressed as deep trance-state. With music, I lose my ego and completely dissolve into the greater vibration of the cosmos. For tantrikas, this is the secret of dissolution that will allow the space for compassion to arise. In another sense, I use music as the sacred offering for my ancestors, for all sentient beings, and for whatever specific healing purpose I would aid or send aid to another; in this shamanic way, the music pacifies the problems of spirit which can cause bodily ills. In the tonal sense, I intone the Goddess inside my voice box, literally invoking her inside of my body, being a part of her, and partnering with her, as she is part of me. That oneness, is the absolute state; it is called anuyoga tantra, or it is called evocation or possession by spiritualists, but ultimately, it calls to the divine feminine energy principally known as Goddess by intoning her. Intonation is in the body. For example, if I want to aid to heal someone, I will use a frequency for a planet that I know will help in healing. Thus, the frequency of the planets which have their own tonal sound I intone in my body, thus adding the celestial object’s power- which is the form of goddess as planet to the sound form of goddess, as I call to her from inside myself. I heal from a place of compassion this way. (Photo Essay 11) Goddess Pilgrimage 2018

[Author’s Note: In May 2018, I set out on a 3 month pilgrimage to Greece, Turkey and the prehistory sites of “Old Europe”. Once again my main focus was “visiting with the Grandmothers”.] Çatalhöyük, Anatolia Çatalhöyük is the site of a large Neolithic and Chalcolithic settlement in southern Anatolia, inhabited from approximately 7500 BCE to 5700 BCE. The iconic Mother Goddess figure of a birthing woman sitting between two leopards was found at Çatalhöyük. The Mother Goddess figure from Çatalhöyük (the head of the figure has been reconstructed), Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, Ankara. The Çatalhöyük settlement forms two mounds 20 metres above the plain. These settlement mounds are formed over millennia with successive layers of habitation. In Bulgaria the Karanovo settlement mound has been excavated to show the successive layers. Karanovo settlement mound, Bulgaria – the numbers on the right indicate layers dating back to the Neolithic. So far the excavations at Çatalhöyük have found clusters of domestic buildings, with no obvious communal buildings such as temples, meeting halls or burial grounds. Some of the larger rooms had ornate murals and wall decorations of horned cattle. One understanding is that there may not have been a division between the everyday and the sacred, so that objects with spiritual meaning may have been placed on the walls of homes and in grain bins and beside ovens rather than in designated “shrines”. However, only about 4% of this site has been excavated, so there is more to discover. Recreation of a room from Çatalhöyük – Museum of Anatolian Civilisations, Ankara The population of the main mound has been estimated at 3,000 – 8,000 people living in an egalitarian culture. The mudbrick buildings were clustered together with no footpaths or streets between the dwellings. The original archaeological interpretations of findings at Ҫatalhöyük included the sacred significance of Mother Goddess figures (see James Mellaart, who led the first excavations at the site – Catal-huyuk. A Neolithic Town in Anatolia.) This interpretation has since been questioned [see Çatalhöyük Figurines – Lynn Meskell (University of Stanford ) and Carolyn Nakamura (Columbia University)]. Meskell and others say that the Neolithic figures at Çatalhöyük may “represent older women who have achieved status” rather than Mother Goddess. Perhaps these two interpretations were not separated 10,000 years ago. Rather than either/or (Goddess or woman), the Çatalhöyük figures may be saying “both/and”, representing Mother Goddess and the life-giving power of women and Nature as the same thing. Certainly interesting to each other, as our spirits long to resonate with another who has had a similar journey. Mine began while I was still a member of the Episcopal Church and a Christian. But relative to many, it was not that long ago, just 18 years. Some women have been knowing and worshiping the Goddess for more than 30 years, some have only just come to the reawakening and re-membering recently. Some of us call ourselves witches, some priestesses, or both. Some do not identify with either of those words and simply say they have immersed themselves in the Divine Feminine, or that they worship the Goddess. Some will say they are Pagan or Wiccan or Dianic Wiccan. Whatever we call ourselves, or do not call ourselves, we are all Sisters in Goddess, those who worship the Great Mother. And though our numbers are growing, seemingly almost daily, we are still in a minority. We need those who are articulate to voice our views and we need wise teachers who can share practices, philosophy and knowledge with those who are eager for such spiritual food. One of the great things about this Goddess Path is that, although there is much written and oral knowledge to be had for those who seek it, the deepest part of this path is experiential. Personal experience with Goddess, deep within ourselves, and having our eyes opened to Her all around us all the time, seeing and feeling Her magic in our lives, knowing Her love and nurturance in our hearts. We have no dogma, no set of rules or commandments, no rigid ideology. We have our own hearts to guide us into all acts of love and pleasure, compassion, humility and reverence which are Her rituals. When we express strength, hold our power and honor life, as well as giggle and laugh, those are Her rituals, too. There are the Women’s Blood Mysteries, which set women apart from men who worship the Goddess, but that should serve to unite women in a strong eternal bond, not alienate men. There is no place for hierarchy. We are all women equal to each other as daughters of the Goddess. We cannot, we must not, allow the patriarchal mindset to contaminate Feminine Spirituality. No hierarchy, no duality, no controlling others. If we want to see a world in which the Divine Feminine is prominent, the world that many of us believe is coming, we need to take a good, hard look at ourselves in the mirror of our Sisters’ eyes and all of us individually commit ourselves to Unity, Sisterhood and Unconditional Love. That does not mean we will never disagree, and sometimes disagree vehemently, but it does mean we do not allow those disagreements to fracture us as a body of women or to damage or destroy our Sisterhood. There are many teachers who have their own followings of students, their own coursework, their own publications and newsletters, their own festivals they work all year to organize and make manifest. This is a good thing! Especially with the national economy the way it is now many, many women cannot afford to travel very far from their homes, so the fact that there are festivals in diverse parts of the country is no doubt just as the Goddess desires. Those who know of Her and hear Her call are greatly benefited by all of these in mind, heart and spirit. We all need each other. We who can spread this information far and wide need to do so, not just think of and promote the one group or project we are involved in ourselves individually. This is the BIG PICTURE. “Ma” in “Mago” and “Ma-Gaia” Mother Goddess, ca.7250-6700 BCE, Catal Huyuk Turkey [Conversation between Carol P. Christ, Ph.D. and Helen Hye-Sook Hwang, Ph.D.] Carol P. Christ (CPC): Below is culled from “Gaia” in Wikipedia: The Greek word γαῖα (transliterated as gaia) is a collateral form of γῆ (gē, Doric γᾶ ga and probably δᾶ da) meaning Earth, a word of uncertain origin. R. S. P. Beekes has suggested a Pre-Greek origin. In Mycenean Greek Ma-ka (trans. as Ma-ga, “Mother Gaia”) also contains the root ga-. Helen Hye-Sook Hwang (HHH): “Mago” and “Goma” are closely linked. Gom or Goma means the bear and Magoist shaman queen of the late fourth millennium BCE. I have made short spaces in the video where it could be paused. For more full participation in the ceremony, you could have some past photos of yourself, an altar with ancestor photos, a gingerbread snake, some apples sliced up, and some apple juice. The script for this Samhain ceremony is offered in Chapter 4 of my book A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony, with all acknowledgements and references there. However I want to acknowledge here the inspiration and some text of Robin Morgan’s poem “The Network of the Imaginary Mother” in her book Lady of the Beasts, for which I was given permission in my book. I also acknowledge here the paraphrase of some words by Starhawk in her book The Spiral Dance, used in the rite of Sailing to a New World. I also use a line from the poem Song of Hecate by Bridget McKern. The elements of Water, Fire, Earth and Air on the altar in this video are placed in directions that are appropriate to my region in the Southern Hemisphere, and East Coast Australia: you may place yours differently, and transliterate when I mention the direction (which I do minimally). For the rite of the Transformation Journey (remembering old selves) I use an adaptation of a children’s game “In and Out the Windows”, where each participant travels in and out of upraised and linked arms of the circle, and when ‘in’ may speak and /or show photos of themselves from the past. Some may choose to remember any self from the entire evolutionary story, with whom they would like to identify. The game seems appropriate to what each being does existentially in so many ways, over the eons as well as in our personal lives. The chant can be found on YouTube. “The Bell of King Seongdeok, known as the Emille Bell, a massive bronze bell at 19 tons is the largest in Korea.” Wikimedia Commons. Cast in 771, the bell reenacts the music of whales to remind people of the Female Beginning, the self-creative power innate all beings. Today is Day 2 of the New Year in the reconstructed Magoist Calendar characterized by 13 months per year and 28 days per month. We are heading toward the Solstice that falls on Dec. 21/22 (Day 5 of the first month in the Magoist Calendar), which happens to be the day of the first full moon of Year 2. We just passed Year 1 or 5915 Magoma Era (the Gregorian 2018). For Year 1, we had the New Year Day on December 18 of 2017, the first new moon day before the December Solstice. That makes December 18 of 2017 our lunation 1, the first lunar year that the reconstructed Magoist Calendar determines its first day of the Year 1! Although relatively short in history, the Mago Work began to celebrate the Nine Day Mago Celebration on the day of December Solstice annually since 2015. With the reconstructed Magoist Calendar, we placed it in its due timeframe, the Ninth Month and the Ninth Day, which fell on August 8, 2018 (US PST) and celebrated it for the first time according to the Magoist Calendar. Apparently, this had to be a mid-Summer event. This left us with another seasonal event, the New Year/Solstice Celebration. A few from around the globe (Germany, Korea, Italy and the US) participated in it or hosted their own local vigils. The Korean temple bell is the key symbol for the Magoist Calendar as well as the Magoist Cosmogony. It is not a coincidence that it is struck on the midnight of the New Year’s Eve. It is Korean tradition that even modern Koreans gather at the bell tower in Seoul to hear the sound of the bell at midnight. And these bells are gigantic weighing 19 tons in the case of the Emile Bell. That this convention has an ancient Magoist root remains esoteric. For not only they strike the bell 28 times in the evening indicating the 28 lunar stations that the Moon stops by in the sky throughout the year (please read below what the 28 day lunar journey means and how it is represented by women). But also the Korean temple bell is no mere acoustic device to play the beautiful sound only. (Essay) Contemplating How Her Creativity Proceeds by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is an edited excerpt from the conclusion of chapter 5 of the author’s book, PaGaian Cosmology: Re-inventing Earth-based Goddess Religion. It is a chapter on the process of the Wheel of the Year. for the Northern Hemisphere version: https://pagaian.org/pagaian-wheel-of-the-year/ It seems to me that the main agenda of the Cosmos is ongoing Creativity, “never-ending renewal” it may be termed, and that this is expressed in Earth’s Seasonal Wheel through the transitions of Autumn,Winter, Spring, Summer; and in the ubiquitous process of a Cosmic Triplicity of Space to Be, Urge to Be and this Place of Being, a dynamic that has often been imagined as the Triple Goddess. In the flow of the PaGaian Wheel of the Year, the Seasonal transitions of the Wheel and the Triplicity of the Cosmos come together. There are two celebrations of the Old One/Crone or the Cosmogenetic quality of autopoiesis creating the Space to Be; and they are Lammas/Late Summer and Samhain/Deep Autumn, which are the meridian points of the two quarters of the waxing dark phase. At Lammas, the first in the dark phase, we may identify with the dark and ancient Wise One – dissolve into Her; at Samhain, we may consciously participate in Her process of the transformation of death/the passing of all. The whole dark part of the cycle is about dissolving/dying/letting go of being – becoming – nurturing it (the midwifing of Lammas/Late Summer), stepping into the power of it (the certain departure of Autumn Equinox/Mabon), the fertility (of Samhain/Deep Autumn), the peaking of it (at Winter Solstice). The meridian points of the two quarters of the waxing light phase then are celebrations of the Young One/Virgin or the Cosmogenetic quality of differentiation, the new continually emerging, the Urge to Be; and they are Imbolc/Early Spring and Beltaine/High Spring. At Imbolc, the first in the light phase, we may identify with She who is shining and new – as we take her form; at Beltaine, we may consciously participate in Her process of the dance of life. The whole light part of the cycle is about coming into being: nurturing it (the midwifing of Imbolc/Early Spring), stepping into the power of it (the certain return of Spring Equinox/Eostar), the fertility (of Beltaine/High Spring), the peaking of it (at Summer Solstice). In the PaGaian wheel of ceremony there are two particular celebrations of the Mother, the Cosmogenetic quality of communion; and they are the Solstices. If one imagines the light part of the cycle as a celebration of the ‘Productions of Time’, and the dark part of the cycle as a celebration of ‘Eternity’, the Solstices then are meeting points, points of interchange, and are celebrations of the communion/relational field of Eternity with the Productions of Time. This is a relationship which does happen in this Place, in this Web. This Place of Being, this Web, is a Communion – it is the Mother; the Solstices mark Her birthings, Her gateways. The Equinoxes then – both Spring and Autumn – are two celebrations wherein the balance of all three Faces/Creative qualities is particularly present: in the PaGaian wheel, the Equinoxes have been special celebrations of Demeter and Persephone – echoing the ancient tradition of Mother-Daughter Mysteries that celebrate the awesomeness of the continuity of life, its creative tension/balance. Both Equinoxes then are celebrations and contemplations of empowerment through deep Wisdom – one contemplation during the dark phase and one during the light phase. The Autumn Equinox is a descent to Wisdom, the Spring Equinox is an emergence with Wisdom gained. I like to think of the Equinoxes, and of the ancient icons of Demeter and Persephone, as celebrations of the delicate ‘curvature of space-time’, the fertile balance of tensions which enables it all. Her Creative Place The Mother aspect then may be understood to be particularly present at four of the Seasonal Moments, which are also regarded traditionally as the Solar festivals; and in this cosmology Sun is felt as Mother. I recognize these four as points of interchange: at Autumn Equinox, Mother is present primarily as Giver – She is letting Persephone go, at Spring Equinox, She is present primarily as Receiver – welcoming the Daughter back, at Winter Solstice the Mother gives birth, creates form, at Summer Solstice, She opens again full of radiance, and disperses form. The Mother is Agent/Actor at the Solstices. She is Participant/Witness at the Equinoxes, where it is then really Persephone who is Agent/Actor, embodying an inseparable Young One and Old One. The Old One is often named as Hecate, who completes the Trio – all seamlessly within each other. Another possible way to visual it, or to tell the story, is this: The Mother – Demeter – is always there, at the Centre if you like. Persephone cycles around. She is the Daughter who returns in the Spring as flower, who will become fruit/grain of the Summer, who at Lammas assents to the dissolution – the consumption. At Autumn Equinox She returns to the underworld as seed – Her harvest is rejoiced in, Her loss is grieved, as She becomes Sovereign of the Underworld – Her face changes to the Dark One, Crone (Hecate). As the wheel turns into the light part of the cycle She becomes Young One/Virgin again. Persephone (as Seed) is that part of Demeter that can be all three aspects – can move through the complete cycle. The Mother and Daughter are really One, and embody the immortal process of creation and destruction. Demeter hands Persephone the wheat, the Mystery, and the thread of life is unbroken – it goes on forever. It is immortal, it is eternal. Even though it is true that all will be lost, and all is lost – Being always arises again: within this field of time there is never-ending renewal, eternity. This is what is revealed in the ubiquitous three faces of the Creative Dynamic/ She of Old, the Triplicity that runs through the Cosmos. The Seed of Life never …
(Mago Almanac Excerpt 5) Introducing the Magoist Calendar by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang

Mago Almanac: 13 Month 28 Day Calendar (Book A) Free PDF available at Mago Bookstore. THE 28-13-7 INTERPLAY How does the number, 28 (days), for the lunar cycle come about? Why is it 28 days and not 29 or 30, the latter implicated in the traditional lunar calendar of East Asia? It appears that 28 days is a value closer to the moon’s sidereal period (about 27.3 days) than the synodic period (about 29.5 days). Or is it that 28 days points to the median between the synodic lunar cycle and the sidereal lunar cycle? To answer these questions, it is important to note that a value in the Mago Time captures an inter-cosmic biological cusp/juncture derived from the matrix of sonic numerology. Distinguished from the patriarchal measure of time fixated into a solipsistic space, it makes visible the interconnectedness of all bodies. It never stands as an isolated single occasion. The 28 day, 13 month calendar has to do with how we perceive the moon. There are two ways of understanding the lunar cycle; the sidereal period and the synodic period (see Figure 2). The synodic period refers to the time, about 29.5 days, that we on earth see the moon complete one round of revolution, e.g. from the full moon to the full moon. In contrast, the sidereal period refers to the actual time, about 27.3 days, that the moon takes to complete one round of revolution. While the synodic time is measured relative to the Earth (the observer’s position is on earth), the sidereal time is measured relative to the distant “fixed” stars (the observer’s position is far out at the distant stars). Since the distant stars are considered at rest, the sidereal period is taken as a universal value, not affected by the location of the viewer, we on earth. There is, apparently, a discrepancy between the lunar cycle that we on earth see the moon return to the same phase and the lunar cycle that the moon actually completes a revolution. The former is based on our observation of the moon’s phases, whereas the latter is based on the moon’s actual orbital motions. The two differs basically because all celestial bodies, the moon, earth, and sun, in the solar system are in motion. It is not just the moon that we watch revolving but Earth also revolves around the sun. We are watching the movement of the moon on a moving vehicle, earth, so to speak. Therefore, the moon has to travel about 2 more days in order for us on earth to see it in the same phase (see the green portion in Figure 2 part). At the position A of the moon in Figure 2, the moon is in line with the sun and the distant stars, which is a new moon. In the position of B (the new moon), the moon is in line with the sun but not with the distant stars. The right hand line of the green portion in line with the distant stars is where the moon started as a new moon. The moon has traveled about 2 more days to be in line with the sun. That is why the synodic period is about 2 days longer than the sidereal period. When it comes to “the lunar calendar”, moderns tend to think of it as the waxing and waning phases of the moon (29.5 days, the synodic period). The problem lies in that, following the synodic period, people see nothing beyond the moon’s phases. They overlook the fact that the moon rotates and revolves on its own axis and around the earth approximately 13 degrees every day. The synodic lunisolar calendar is a navel-gazing vision. Attending to the moon’s phases may seem benign. However, that is a planned pitfall; the synodic lunisolar calendar with 12 months in a year is here to supersede the 28 day, 13 month gynocentric calendar. Its irregularity with the number of days in a month (29 or 30 days with about 11 extra days for intercalation) is an inherently critical flaw. Its inaccuracy when incorporated within the solar annual calendar (approximately 365.25 days) stands out. Seen below in the table, the synodic lunar track results in as many leap days as a total of 44 days for 4 years, whereas the sidereal lunar track has 2 days for 4 years. The synodic lunisolar calendar undercuts the moon’s given capacity – guiding earthly beings into the intergalactic voyage of WE/HERE/NOW. In it, both the moon and women are, glorified and objectified by the viewer, cast under the male voyeuristic eye. On the contrary, the sidereal lunisolar calendar, based on the cyclic synchrony between the moon and women, offers the lens to the interconnectedness of all bodies in the universe. Through the comparative study of ancient cultures of Babylon, Arabia, India and China, W. B. Yeats (1865-1939) observes the substantive difference in dynamic between the two lunation tracks, the synodic and the sidereal. He notes that the moon’s orbital motion, apart from the sun’s, charts out the celestial sphere as the 28 Mansions. I have learned that the 28 Mansions or 28 Constellations of the Moon is a popular form of the 28 day and 13 month Magoist calendar, widely circulated among East Asians especially Koreans from the ancient time. (2018 Mago Pilgrimage) Peak of Nine Wells in Yeongam (Spiritual Rock), South Jeolla by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang, Ph.D.

[Author’s Note: This essay comprises a summary report and its unfolding awakenings to be unraveled in sequences. I dedicate this essay to my 2018 Mago Pilgrimage companions, Narayani Ankh, Kate Besleme, Hyunsuk Jee, and Julie Jang. Learn more about Mago Pilgrimage.] Hike Report The town, Yeong-am (Spirit Rock), emanates an aura from its Magoist natural, historical, and cultural legacies. Among them, what grabbed my attention include Wolchul-san (月出山 Moon Rising Mountain), Dogap-sa (Dogap Temple), and Gurim Village, known for the birth place of Doseon Guksa (State Master Doseon), a prominent Buddhist monk, the 9th century of Silla (827-898). I was most attracted to the Peak of Nine Wells (九井峰 Gujeong-bong) as well as the Loom Cave shaped in the form of a vulva, part of the Moon Rising Mountain ranges. Our goal was to hike the Peak of Nine Wells (hereafter Gujeong-bong). We took the seemingly shortest trail, through Cheonwang-bong (Peak of Heavenly Ruler), the highest peak of Moon Rising Mountain, 809 km above sea level. It took about 8 hours for the entire hike took about 8 hours and it was one of the two most strenuous and significant ones that I have taken. About 30 years ago, I climbed Mt. Halla in Jeju Island and had received the vision of my life. No longer a youth, I had a much clearer vision about my life and the act of high altitude hiking this time. With my two companions, Narayani Ankh and Kate Besleme, who showed no sign of hesitation or tiredness in the beginning and throughout the course, I embarked my day’s journey. With occasional breaks, we were able gain distance and progress. Beautiful streams adorned the valley. Rocks were emitting the oldest song of the earth. Our talks continued and deepened, when we had breath to spare. It was such a blessing that I had these two co-hikers from elsewhere! My mind zoomed in and worked in detail. All thinking and feeling became registered. Impromptu, I began to count my steps up on stiff wooden stairways. My counting one, two, three… and thirteen carried me to the top of the stairs. The 13 counting chant worked; There was no medium between me and WE/HERE/NOW. We were gifted a 360-degree bird’s eye view on Cheongwang-bong. Several ridges with the depth of Magoist history came within a vision. We took a small lunch break. On a high mountain top wherein all remains visibly related, everyone becomes kin. On Cheongwang-gong, we were instructed by the rangers we met along the journey about the ridge path to Gujeong-bong. Gujeong-bong would be about another one and half hour hike away from us. We passed by a few masses of gigantic boulder formations for which Wolchul-san is known for. Among them was the standing stone called the Phallic Rock, a name that I suspected to be original. For standing stones are called the Rock of Mago Halmi in other regions of Korea. In any case, the very existence of the Phallic Rock (남근바위 Namgeun Bawi) heralded the appearance of the Loom Cave, a misnomer for the Yoni Cave (여근바위 Yeogeun Bawi). Heart beatings escalated as we approached our destination. We finally reached the Loom Cave, which closely resembled the vulva. The cave was made of a huge boulder, three times taller than an average person in size. A small pond sat inside the entrance made the cave a real yoni of nature. I was pulled into the state of trance, as we made a final climb up the stairs around the left side of the Loom Cave. I was able to see that the Peak of Nine Wells is located on the top plain of the Loom Cave. It is part of the yoni cave! I saw a number of wells pocketed in various sizes of ponds. They numbered more than nine, about 13, variable in number in that a couple of them were made in between adjacent boulders. The biggest well was larger than one meter (3.3 feet) in diameter. Moderns do their typical things in a time like this, indeed odd out of other options or necessity to share with others: I took photos of the wells and my companions, which were absolutely beautiful as they were. However, mental imprints were not able to be contained then and in nature. WE/HERE/NOW embraced all on the spot, perhaps like a black hole. Casual conversations wouldn’t continue. The silence and the oneness fast permeated our time/space. Our minds worked on layers. The deepest mind was stored in the reservoir of the unspoken. Descending is good as a time/space of tuning/balancing oneself to the power of WE/HERE/NOW. There wasn’t much time left for us to return, while the sun was still out. We hurriedly descended a different tail. I was no longer the same person I was prior to the experience of hiking Gujeong-bong. No need to dig up and count the number of branches in one’s root. (Mago Essay 2) Toward the Primordial Knowing of Mago, the Great Goddess by Helen Hwang

Part 2 Gynocentric Study of Mago’s Visual Representations [The following sequels including this one are a modified version of my paper presented to Daoist Studies, the American Academy of Religion (AAR) in 2010.] Mago [麻姑, also known as Magu or Mako] remains underrepresented if treated in modern scholarship. Little attention has been given to the topic of Magu in its own right. In the West a handful of scholars have mentioned Mago within the context of Daoism. Her transnational and trans-temporal manifestations in Korea, China, and Japan are largely unrecognized. That Magu is known as multiple identities throughout history in East Asia has gone unnoticed. In my study of Mago, that Mago’s supreme divinity as the Great Goddess has been rendered unintelligible over time under the rule of patriarchy offers a crucial insight leading to a befitting method. First of all, the perception of Her as the Great Goddess enables one to recognize a large volume of primary sources, otherwise left unattended, from across national, regional, temporal, and typological boundaries. Secondly, the primary materials in turn allow one to assess the supreme nature of the Great Goddess, Mago, apart from the theological framework of the monotheistic male god. By being a non-Western and non-patriarchal tradition, Magoism warrants a distinctive thealogy characterized by self-equilibrium and interdependence of components, part of which was discussed in Part I. Thirdly, a trans-disciplinary method is corollary in processing a variety of multi-genre materials that would not be neatly categorized in a mono-disciplinary data-pool. To say the least, it liberates itself from the tyranny of monolithic methodology, which dissects to take only a portion of data from the whole and treat it as if it is a single independent entity. In short, methodology and thealogy, being mutually supportive, lead the researcher to a rather unexplored conceptual territory, which I call gynocentrism. Gynocentrism takes the female principle as an operating system. Its system has been thwarted within the discourse of androcentric perspectives. Gynocentrism is a submerged mode of thinking in the patriarchically indoctrinated psyche. Made to be subliminal, the gynocentric mode of thinking elicits the Mago (Great Goddess) consciousness. Consequently, Mago consciousness upholds the infrastructures of gynocentric thinking. What distinguishes gynocentrism from feminism is that it redefines the male as a derivative of the Female. Gynocentrism reflects the principle of all mothers of living beings. In that sense, my study of Mago is a gynocentric endeavor to chart an alternative paradigm of doing thealogy within the context of East Asian history, mythology, and culture. It is a misunderstanding that Magoist thealogy or Magology (the study of the Great Goddess) concerns the divine only. Gynocentric thealogy is not locked into a separate domain apart from humanity, nature, and the universe. Put differently, Magology is not a mere conceptual tool that explains the divine. It summons gynocentric histories, myths, and cultures that are to be restored and rewritten. It calls for rethinking everything in a fresh light. In the sequels to follow, I bring to light a series of Mago’s visual representations expressed in paintings, ceramics, embroideries, woodprints, sculptures, and topographies, and examine Her multivalent identities in light of the large corpus of Magoist written and oral texts. Mago’s visual icons are beyond one’s documentation. They, especially those from China, are still a favored item in modern day’s auction markets. Several hundred images that I have documented are simply incomplete. Some sample images are chosen to show an array of historical/cultural/social productions, once honored and valued highly by many. Through the economy of commodification, these images have carried the cultural memory of the Great Goddess. While a number of her visual icons are undated, many are from the Yuan (1271 to 1368), Ming (1368 to 1644), and Qing (1644 to 1912) dynasties of China, the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) of Korea, and certain historical periods of Japan. Also, many are from modern times. In them, Mago/Magu/Mako is depicted as: (1) An immortal/transcendant (仙 xian or seon, immortal or transcendant). (2) A mendicant. (3) A sea goddess. (4) A mountain goddess. (5) A crone. (6) The ancestor of shamans. And (7) A non-anthropomorphic identity or giantess as the nature-shaper or cosmogonist of local topographies such as mountains, rocks, caves, and seas. The notion of a giantess is employed to describe Her transcendental nature. In this case, Mago-named topographies alongside folk stories describe Her feature/identity of immeasurability. Needless to say, these identities overlap and merge, making up an overall picture of Mago as the Great Goddess. That is, She is each and all. These visual icons, stylized with symbolic objects, respectively demonstrate specific Magoist cultural memes once prevailing and favored among East Asians. A throng of objects such as medicinal herbs, especially lingzhi mushrooms, flowers, hoes, baskets, vessels, and animals, forms the coded syntaxes of the arcane language. In particular, a troupe of animals including deer, crane, dog, and monkey highlights the drama. Also, colophons carry not only the cultural meme but also prestige and authority for its producers and possessors. (To be continued.) It is the eponym of ancient Goddess names and their derivatives. Undergirding human cultures, Magoism has resurged time and time again in folk religious traditions, cultural expressions, and socio-political-spiritual movements in the course of history. Nonetheless, the topic of Mago (Magu or Mako) remains untreated in its own right in mainstream East Asian Studies. Espousing Sinocentric historiography, East Asian Studies has functioned to suppress non-Chinese East Asian histories. The problem with Sinocentrism lies in the fact that it normalizes ancient East Asian history as patriarchal, foreclosing the history of pre- and proto-Chinese Old Magoist East Asia/Korea. Partial aspects of Mago representation have been discussed by Korean folklorists and Daoist scholars. The identification of Mago, varying from the nature-shaper to a shaman ruler, to a priestess, and to a Daoist Goddess in her socio-cultural manifestations, must appear incoherent, if not anomalous, to non-Magoist researchers. Why does Mago appear as multiple identities? What does that have to do with pre-established studies? Conflict is tangible. Even if Magoism is denied its very name, a wealth of primary sources from Korea, China, and Japan has surfaced to the public.Among these sources are the Budoji (Epic of the Emblem City) and the Handan Gogi (Old Record of Han and Dan) from Korea, which makes possible the very perception of Magoism. Magoism is an old concept that is explicitly and implicitly referred to as “the Principle of Mago,” “the Affair of Mago,” “the Reign of Mago,” “cult of Mago,” “the Origin,” or simply “Mago” in primary sources.[1] In a narrow sense, Magoism connotes the trans-patriarchal cultural tradition of the Creatrix, developed and propagated by ancient East Asian Magoists. In a broad sense, it refers to the worldwide manifestation of gynocentric cultures that embody the consciousness of the Great Mother. This study names the patriarchally unnamed, Mago and Magoism, the Creatrix and HER East Asian mytho-historical-ethnological manifestations. I have used uppercases for the pronouns of Mago to convey supremacy as needed. We will discuss the following: (1) Mago epithets, (2) a gamut of primary sources collected from Korea, China, and Japan, (3) Old Magoist East Asia/Korea and Pan-East Asian Magoism, and (4) the mytho-history of Magoism reconstructed in a six-period circular model of timespace and some pivotal events of each period. Reinstating Magoism, an anciently originated cultural matrix of East Asia that venerates Mago as cosmogonist, progenitor, and ultimate sovereign, is at the heart of this study. With Maoism or rather in it, we are able to attain the one unbroken panoramic view of human history from its cosmogonic beginning to the primordial home of Mago Stronghold, to Old Magoism, to proto-patriarchal Magoism, and finally to its contemporary revival. Primary sources guide the methodology, namely a transdisciplinary feminist study of the Creatrix. A time-old gynocentric (non-ethnocentric, supra-nationalist, and non-dualist) system of meaning emerges from a motley of sources including myths, histories, folktales, place-names, artistic and cultural expressions, religious, geographical and literary texts. The episteme interweaves across mythology, history, spirituality, thealogy, linguistics, ethnology and other disciplines.
