I talk to trees
thanking them for their service
to the world,
praising them for their beauty,
asking them to share their wisdom
the many ways they teach us to
shed what is no longer useful
and blossom with renewed life
as the seasons change.
They stand tall or small
against the wind and rain
enduring blinding sun
and freezing snow,
rooted to the Earth, and one another.
They do not falter;
they persevere, each day, each night,
year in and year out.
How do we emulate their
courage, their grace under pressure?
How do we summon the best in ourselves
to shelter all that need sheltering,
to provide shade and solace
to all that need kindness?
I talk to trees, and they say,
breathe, bend, reach out, stand tall,
wear your crown of compassion proudly,
for we are all connected
to the sky and the soil.
Remember: we are kin,
connected bark to skin,
leaves to fingers
limbs to legs
heart to heart
at our most essential core.
