(Poem) Walking in the Early Morning Darkness by Mary Saracino

I love to walk in the early morning darkness

before the first light of day kisses the horizon

when the birds are still asleep

and the trees sway in the gentle breeze

and the moon smiles at me from the ebony sky.

The quiet soothes my soul

calms my mind

reminds me that rushing is overrated.

Each footstep I take invites me

to surrender to the day as it unfolds

in front of my eyes, with ease and gratitude.

I look upward at the last remaining stars

and say a silent prayer

that this day will bring joy

and if not, the will to carry on,

the resolve to face the present

with grace and grit,

to look for goodness in all beings

to be kind and loving

to be honest and real

to never, ever, fear the dark

to always embrace it and

to welcome the morning light

as it emerges through the clouds

as I turn the corner and

make my way back home.

  1. What a wonderful tribute to darkness even as the northern hemisphere is celebrating the return of the light. I love walking in darkness, the darker the better. I used to walk more than a mile in darkness to and from work in the winter, sometimes so dark I couldn’t see my feet in front of me. It was like walking into Mystery.

  2. Ah my prayer too – ‘that this day will bring joy

and if not, the will to carry on,

the resolve to face the present

    with grace and grit,

to look for goodness in all being’s
