(Music) Gentle Rebel ~ Songs for the Resistance by Alison Newvine

Recently, I’ve been finding refuge and inspiration in the protest songs of the 60s, 70s and beyond. The spirit of resistance and the impassioned prayers for justice and kindness that live in this music serve as reminder that we have always been reaching for the good in the midst of atrocities and overpowering systems of harm. Music as a form of protest weaves together a gentleness of spirit with a refusal to accept cruelty as the norm.

Headlining this collection of songs are Holly Near, Joanne Shenandoah, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell and, my personal heroine and patron saint of gentle rebellion, Sinead O’Connor. This playlist centers the voices of women while also including the music of gentle rebels such as Bob Marley, Phil Ochs, John Lennon, Stevie Wonder and John Denver. Also featured are more contemporary voices such as Alanis Morissette, Tracy Chapman, Indigo Girls, Black Eyed Peas, Anohni and Sara Bareilles. Reaching even further back in time we have Billie Holiday, Woody Guthrie and Big Mama Thorton.

May this collection of songs support your spirit during this time of rapidly increasing chaos, oppression and the utter madness of patriarchy. This songlist is a living document and I’d love to add to it if there are songs/artists you recommend.
