(Poem) Homage to Meridel LeSueur, Ph.D.

Homage to Meridel LeSueur

On the Anniversary of Her Death: 11/13/96

You held my hand

As no one ever has before or since;

Looking in my eyes

With your piercing gaze

You named me

Persephone.

You stepped out of the darkness today

To rally your daughters;

My heart is blessed with tears

To be amongst them.

How did I find you then

And how did I find you again today

On the anniversary of your death?

How did I know?

It was you,

O my ancestor,

O Woman of Valor,

You called me again.

I am humbled, humbled,

On my knees,

Head to the ground.

I am humbled.

Is it because today marks the end of hope

And the beginning of truth?

Is it because today the call of the groundswell

Echoes through the skies?

Is it because you know what it means to be silenced

And to reclaim your voice,

And so you rally your daughters now

So that we can reclaim our voices of truth

And sing lullabies to our trillions upon trillions of children,

All the children who have ever lived and died,

All the children of all times.

O my beloved mother

You come forward today

To hold me fast to my path.

You are the Healer Warrior

You are the Writer Activist

You are the Mother Leader

You are the the one who was silenced

And reclaimed her voice.

O my beloved mother

You come forward today

To hold me fast to my path.
