(Poem) The Painting Of Silver Light by William Matthews

Crystals of frost in the air-
I see my breath-
Cascading vapors making shapes of imagined animals of anyone’s guess-
The silver light of the moon illuminates the forest at the farthest reaches of my sight-
The trees stand like evergreen brushes painting the sky-
Dipped with the moons silver light-
Perhaps the great artist painted the stars with the moons silver-
And illuminated the canvas with flame of the sun-
Perhaps we are the audience to the greatest artistry ever-
But the canvass scale is titanic, we are struck dumb-
What we can see as we gaze with enraptured eyes-
Is a morsel of unbelievable beauty-
In the swatch all of earth lies-
Oceans, waterfalls, lands of fantastic majesty-
Zebras, whales, elephants, on natures tapestry-
The songbirds music,a dolphins song, and the howling wolfs nighttime call-
How honored to be featured in this work at all-
In a portrait so vast it’s easy to lose sight-
But try to remember in the painting of a silver night-
