Gratitude stalks you Unawares you are ambushed Smile in surprise Earlier this week I was in the woods at a stream swollen with spring, and a familiar situation overtook me. It’s similar to coming upon a beautiful scene by surprise or having an unusual interaction with an animal–and of course you left the camera at home. This is the situation of coming upon a sublime space, maybe in some ordinary place where you’ve been many times, and your heart is unexpectedly opened and full to overflowing. Perhaps you can hear the voices of water, rocks and trees. This is the time for ritual, but you have no offering. A simple thank you does not seem like enough. What gift can you leave to signify the importance of this moment?

(Book Review) She Who Spins the Coils of Creation: Sacred Female Cosmology in the Electric PlasMA Universe by Leslene Della-Madre, Reviewed by Glenys Livingstone

There’s a lot that I initially love about this book: it is very clearly coming from a female perspective, which is always so refreshing and nurturant … how I love to be held in Her womb, experience and name the creativity of the Cosmos from within Her/her: that too is my chosen perspective and priority. The bibliography is impressive, including a good range of feminist Goddess people, and some female scientists. The Preface is good, the position explained well. I love the introduction of new words, which comes when the story is told from a female view, and portals may open, after millennia of her/our exclusion from naming phenomena: for example, “evolution” may become “vulvalution”, and our origins are described as an ova/vulva/lution, rather than a “big bang”. I myself have described those mysterious parthenogenic origins as an Original Ovulation, or a big O (orgasm). This is women seeing and expressing/naming our knowings and observations of the world/cosmos from within our own skins, from within our valued experience. In the Introduction there is a good analysis of the traumatic childhoods of Western icons such as Descartes and Newton, how that affected their methods and conclusions: this is so rarely taken into account in the acceptance of their work. They are assumed to be “objective”, which many are aware is actually never the case. Later in Part II, there is further good critique of the often flagrant misogynist perspective of Euro-Western icons such as Plato, Aristotle, Freud, Einstein and more: and Leslene tells it with some humour at times (well there are those of us who would find it so).There are many who remain unaware of this hatred at the base of Euro-Western philosophy and sciences, and how it has affected the very structures and perceptions of our everyday lives. But the thing is, for me: while Leslene often found mainstream science boring, as she states on p. xxii, it was never boring for me, it was indeed a passion for me, fired me up, and for the last few decades, with the help of science, I have understood that the universe is alive, sentient, and connected; without naming it as “Electric.” While Leslene wants to push aside or diminish the theory/concept of gravity, I personally love it, understanding it as I do, as a primordial alluring power of the Cosmos. I feel it as a power with which Earth holds me, and with this same power Earth is held in orbit around Sun, Moon around Earth … and I can feel it! It is a power that cosmologist Brian Thomas Swimme names as Allurement, and he speaks about it as love “in its cosmic dimension,” as “the basic binding energy found everywhere in reality”, and as “the primary allurement that all galaxies experience for all other galaxies”.[i] He says: “Allurement evokes being and life”, and “love is a word that points to this alluring activity in the cosmos. This primary dynamism awakens the communities of atoms, galaxies, stars, families, nations, persons, ecosystems, oceans, and stellar systems … Think of the power of this alluring activity – its immensity.”[ii] I do however appreciate the attention given in this book to the “Electric Universe”: we can and do have both, I am sure. Leslene supposes that only an electric universe is about “connection and reciprocity”, “synonymous with femaleness”,[iii] whereas I find gravity to be all of that. I refer to the work of philosopher Linda Holler who describes the sensual, embodied effect of gravity on thinking: how space becomes “thick” as this “relational presence … turns notes into melodies, words into phrases with meaning, and space into vital forms with color and content, (and) also holds the knower in the world.”[iv] Leslene loses me a little early on in the book, in some places where there is much conjecture: for example, on p.xxxviii where she refers to Talbot and Thornhill’s ideas about the origins of the ubiquitous cross-cultural presence of snakes and dragons in numerous mythologies. I do not think there is any need to postulate about cataclysmic events visible in the solar system as the source for such images though they may well have occurred, and I do not think it is productive for an argument for a female cosmology. I much prefer a more organic explanation, which seems so obvious to me: that is, all humans across the globe dwell on this earth, and most with reptiles, birds and many animals in common. All humans across the globe dwell within very similar bodies, sharing very similar fundamental needs and desires – elemental, emotional, and social. There is no necessity to look outside the everyday experience of being/becoming in a human body on this Planet, to understand the cross-cultural sharing of ubiquitous images, metaphor, stories and rituals. Joseph Campbell speaks to this specifically in his book The Inner Reaches of Outer Space: Metaphor as Myth and as Religion, the Prologue title being “Myth and the Body”, and the title of the first chapter being “Cosmology and the Mythic Imagination”. Much has been expressed in common across the Planet with the power of the poetic mind. I argue with the premise “that most myths are born of celestial events that have shaped culture.” This is not to deny the influence of celestial events and archaeoastronomy, and that it has often been neglected, and needs to be recognised and included as a source; but there is so much in the human embodied sensual and social experience that is organically formative. Let’s not deny the body again in the haste to admit the significance of our interactions with celestial events. Celestial events may have re-iterated realities and prejudices that were already present for more organic reasons, and been interpreted accordingly: for example, on page 13 Leslene refers to celestial events that are said to have “caused women to lose status in Mesopotamia and Egypt.” To my mind this is far too simplistic, and seems to deny the primacy of the organic and social experience and unfolding. We do not have to rely on celestial …
(Prose) A Gift from The Goddess by Luna Anna

Goku in his every day magnificence How many of us have got through life purely because we had a pet, a familiar by our side? I never really considered my pets to be gifts from Her and then there was Goku. Goku is my rescue cat. As the saying goes, he rescued me…. It was a dark time in my life when my gift arrived. My dad had died and my familiar, my cat Satoshi had also died. I was in an abusive relationship. I had financial troubles as I was too sick to work full-time and was being drained by my relationship. I had begun a path with the Goddess central to my life. I had awakened and was having guidance and shifts that came through Her. I suppose I was beginning my life of service to Her but didn’t know it at the time. Less than one week out of hospital, having had a breakdown, I was gifted a semi-feral kitten named Goku. The name comes from an anime where Goku is earths fiercest warrior and he certainly lived up to his name. I have the scars to prove it. As soon as this tiny five-week-old kitten was passed to me to care for, he said to me telepathically “Hello, I’m here to teach you about death.” Death. Not my favourite subject to be ‘taught’. That night, Goku was unwell, and needed vet care. At the emergency vets, the vet told us “He might die.” The words still ring through me five years later because for the entirety of his life, he has been at the edge of death with an incurable virus that requires close monitoring and if left unchecked can be fatal. Indeed, for two years, it was nearly fatal. He spent his time in and out of specialist vets who all agreed they had never seen anything so severe. Every day was a conscious decision whether to carry on or put him to sleep. These are not decisions you can take lightly. You know you are the custodian. You know you are borrowing them from Her. You know you must honour their choice, no matter how devastating that might be to you. Still, he chose life, and I chose him. I loved him more than I’ve ever loved any pet. The cleverness of this. I could see how She had made him into exactly the kind of cat I would fall for. Exactly the kind of cat, I would fight for. Exactly the kind of cat, I would live for. I devoted my life to keeping his life going. Oh, She planned it alright. She planned that I would break my heart open time again for him. Eventually I fled my old life and took him with me. She knew I would save him before I saved myself, so She brought him to me with the mission to do just that. We left together, once again, close to death. It was the start of the pandemic, and we didn’t know how we would survive. Slowly, he got better and just as we always dance together – I got sick. I had the worst breakdown I’ve ever had. Now, I was the one close to death and he was the one fighting to keep me alive. We clung to each other. He began his work as my therapy cat. He was bossy and demanding. I was exhausted and traumatised. He was insistent that I get up, get washed and dressed, eat, drink and that I move to play with him. He gave me a reason and he was such a high intensity cat, that he was able to organise the household and hold me through all the trials that came my way. Coming out of the deep fog of trauma, I looked at the beauty of him. She had made him exquisitely. The precision of Her brushstrokes to create such a creature with black smoke, charcoal streaks and soft white fine fur that blew in the wind like feathers on angel’s wings. His slow blinking green eyes staring up at me, I marvelled at how She comes up with these things. He fit my arms perfectly despite being a huge cat. His neck slotted into the creek of my elbow neatly. His paws are just the right length to wrap around my neck and his face the exact placement to give me kisses on my cheek. The wonder of the accuracy of it all, hit me. “You are the most beautiful cat in the world.” I’d tell him. “I love you so much. You are my best baby boy cat.” Love would pour out of me. Having lived a life of abuse, it was the first time my love could run free, and I would gush over him. He healed me. I healed him. We were a team. My most favourite team ever. Only Goddess could have known the recipe for this. Only She who knows all, sees all and is all, could bring this deep soul bond into being with such ease. As I write this, Goku is on the path to death. I’m bracing myself for his return to Her. I find myself pleading for him to stay with me, but I know I only ever borrowed him. He belongs to Her, not me. My lesson in death is just beginning as his life is ending – that dance again. What a gift. She, the creator of all things, gave me the greatest gift of all. Excerpt from Invoking Animal Magic: A guide for the Pagan priestess Ishtar is the popular name of the fertility goddess originating in Mesopotamia. She became bridged with the goddess Inanna of the older Sumerian kingdom and was worshiped elsewhere under the name Astarte, which means womb. Ishtar controls the fertility of all things, including people, animals and plants. She has a multitude of lovers, but the bull and vegetation god Dumuzi is her most celebrated consort. She calls him her honeyman, her sweet shepherd, the one her womb loves best. She eventually kills her mates, as her would-be lover Gilgamesh complains bitterly when repelling her advances. Ishtar initiates life, so she must also take it. Though spells are addressed to Ishtar for protection in pregnancy and childbirth, she is not strictly speaking considered a mother goddess. Rather, she rules the sexual force that allows life to perpetuate itself. Nor is she a goddess of the wilderness: she is credited with bringing the many gifts of civilization to her city of Uruk—gifts like writing, building, irrigation, religious ceremony and medicine. Although she rules fecundity on earth, Ishtar bears the title Queen of Heaven. Ancient Mediterranean peoples did not see heaven and earth as disconnected spheres, since the movement of celestial bodies affects life on earth. Ishtar is identified with Venus, the biggest star of the morning and evening skies, or with the beautiful multicolored Sirius, known even in ancient times to be a twin star.

By revitalizing Indigenous knowledge, honoring traditions and renewing annual cycles of life, rematriation directly addresses harms caused by patriarchal extraction and violence.” (Bioneers) Bioneers, is a FREE online publication that has been around since 1990. in addition to its weekly programs this organization is now introducing the ‘Leading from the Feminine’ newsletter whose intent is to bridge divides and to celebrate connection invoking the feminine as leaders. This newsletter exists to bridge divides and celebrate connections within the rich tapestry of visionary women and men who are evoking/ invoking the feminine to lead with courage, vulnerability, intuition and empathy. Rematriation focuses on Indigenous knowledge and directly addresses the harm done by patriarchal extraction and violence. I don’t know why Indigenous Peoples ideas continue to be invisiblized (my made up word) by feminists and the culture at large but my hypothesis is two – fold. The first idea that comes to mind is we have never acknowledged let alone made reparation for the horrors that colonists enacted on the Native Peoples that were the first inhabitants on this continent. Atrocities continue to be enacted today. Most of us live on stolen land. Those that don’t are stuffed onto reservations. I also believe that the collective is so used to seeing nature as a dead/mindless resource to be used that it’s inconceivable to most that all aspects of nature are alive and sentient. The Indigenous belief that nature is not only sentient but also a powerful teacher and all individuals are relatives is usually dismissed as nonsense, unless westerners choose to appropriate some Indigenous ideas into their own rituals to legitimize themselves. We see this behavior occurring most frequently with new age shaman types of one sort or another. They are everywhere. Our profound disconnect from natural cycles has created a sense of isolation and a loneliness and that has driven us into a way of being that invites addiction at every level – be it to substances, information, rampant consumerism, traveling – well the list goes on. Ironically, if there is a way to move into a truly feminized future, we need to incorporate Indigenous science and the practices that are associated with them into our present lexicon. These people have been in a respectful, loving and reciprocal relationship with nature since the beginning – long before Neolithic times. These people are literally our foremothers/forefathers. This attitude has now become critical for survival of all human species so it’s time to incorporate Indigenous wisdom and knowledge into our lexicon but we must do so legitimately giving credit to “The People” (all Indigenous peoples have a word that means original people) There are excellent western scientists who are turning to Indigenous folks for ancient knowledge. Yet not surprisingly most of these cutting edge scientists are marginalized. Suzanne Simard posited some 50 years ago that all trees were in relationship with one another ( her work has been replicated repeatedly). Recently she created the 100 Year Tree Project that will continue to study the relationships between communicating trees, humans and animals and the mycelial fungal network that supports all plant life on earth. Suzanne not only uses Indigenous science but has incorporated it (along with Native scholars) into all of her work, making it clear that the original inhabitants of this land have access to knowledge that westerners know nothing about. The latter have become trusted leaders. One more recent example that might be opening a crack in the fabric of dismissal/denial is Merlin Sheldrake whose work on the role of fungal mycelial networks incorporates Indigenous science and guidance into global research putting the power of discovery into the hands of Indigenous people around the globe. A third example might be physicians like my friend Gary who incorporates holistic medicine into his practice, using Indigenous and Asian remedies, all of which focus on the person acknowledging the profound reciprocal relationship between humans and the rest of nature. Let me make it clear that I am not criticizing any woman or groups of women who seek the wisdom of the goddess because this too can be a way in. I certainly am one such person. Having grown up as a westerner it was only my childhood love affair with nature that taught me that all nature was alive, educating me into the reality of relational interconnection. I think It’s important to acknowledge that Indigenous women are creating their own word for restoration and that this definition is not about separation but used to acknowledge that Indigenous peoples exist – are alive and well and that the women stand at the forefront of protesting, seed saving and healing ecological damage. Bioneers seeks a ‘both and’ perspective, one that includes Indigenous peoples as an equal partner. Although I think it’s important to understand what we know about the beginnings and more recent history of “herstory” because these journeys into the past provide us with a working framework, today we need more than scholarship to move feminism into a new relationship with the dominant culture. (Art) Maiden, Mother, Crone: A Sacred Feminine Landscape by Glen Rogers

Maiden, Mother, Crone: A Sacred Feminine Landscape Oil on Canvas, 56” x 106” In this large-scale painting, a rich and colorful landscape unfolds with the Triple Goddess as the focus – the three stages of womanhood. Symbols such as the vessel, the spiral, the moon, the bird, the lotus, and the snake – all part of a visual vocabulary from my book, Symbols of the Spirit: A Meditative Journey Through Art. In this painting I expanded on my previous charcoal drawing, The Sacred Feminine Trilogy, (www.magoism.net/2021/01). On the left is the Maiden – a young indigenous woman, her back to the viewer, turning towards center, a long braid falls down her back. Her right hand holds a tight fist, in defiance – “a don’t mess with me stance”. She is clearly taking her power back as spirals of renewal dance on her skirt. A bird sits on her shoulder, her Spirit Guide giving her encouragement. A Vessel balanced on her head holds an image of the snake, a symbol for the goddess and cyclic regeneration. In the center is the Crone – her eyes closed in a meditative state. The new moon, a sign of the goddess, is tattooed on her forehead. She stands in the light of the full moon, her hands outstretched calling forth her power. And the lotus flowers at her feet in various stages of unfolding, point to her spiritual connection. The Crone provides a centering presence for the other two figures, a connection to the Goddess, the Divine Feminine. On the right is the Mother – pregnant and abundant with life. She holds white calla lilies in front of her stomach – a symbol of fertility. Her breasts are full with nourishment in anticipation for new life. She looks toward the center, to the Crone for guidance and strength as she moves towards her new role of motherhood. A red bird hovers above, a reminder to be true to herself. (Essay 2) Crack in the Alienated Colonised Mind by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is part 2 of an edited excerpt from the author’s Introduction to her book PaGaian Cosmology: Re-inventing Earth-based Goddess Religion. Being “Other” “just a mother”?Image: Vierge Ouvrante, Erich Neumann, The Great Mother, Pl 176. The sense of being “other”: that is, out of the main play and text of things, and perhaps irrelevant, was exacerbated by being female. Perhaps this was actually central to the sense of alienation, since the religion, the main cosmology, paid her very little positive attention. It has been common for millennia that women have not been able to name themselves or their experience as sacred, because the metaphor of the Divine did not extend to their experience, their presence in the world. The historical, scientific and religious texts of my cultural context did not include the perspectives of a female-friendly cosmology. Woman as philosopher, shaman, priestess, spiritual authority, wise woman, healer, and also as mother in these roles, was barely identified, let alone her perspective taken seriously. Scholarly texts which purported to be whole and truthful objective accounts, have used terms like “us” and “we” – presuming to speak for her, even as they burnt her, silenced her, kept her out of institutions, politics and texts. If the story had been told from within her perspective, that is, the perspective of a female-friendly cosmos … as wise woman, healer, priestess, mother, would she speak of herself for instance, as “just a mother” – if her mind was imbued with the integrity of life happening in her? Would she allow a church to tell her she could not speak for the Divine, if her bodymind had not been locked up? The female body – and hence her presence – has not been included in most of humanity’s thinking for some time. French philosopher Merleau-Ponty speaks about the body and its importance in human experience. For him, The body is first of all a way of viewing the world; it is at one and the same time the way a subjective attitude both comes to know itself and express itself. The lived phenomenal body must therefore not be thought of as an object in itself, but as a bodily presence in the world, a bodily awareness of the world.[i] Vierge Ouvrante. The denial of the body in general has certainly influenced Western thought[ii]; so then it may be asked, how has the denial of the female body in particular affected thinking – by women themselves as well as by the men who wrote the texts? It is now a largely accepted fact that half the human race has rarely been allowed, or found access to the development of the mainly adhered-to texts of philosophies and sciences. Her body, for the last few millennia, was not supposed to do what it did; if her body was more like his, then it would have been better, and normal. St. Augustine for example, regarded it as an achievement when a nun’s menstrual cycle ceased due to fasting: he regarded that she was getting holier. The body, at its best and peak of integrity, was not supposed to menstruate; what did this kind of thinking signify? What kind of worldview was being denied? Woman’s fertility was thus frequently a source of shame, and certainly in the cultural context, it was at the base of her loss of power[iii]. It is the worldview of the female body, this subjective presence in the world, that has been absent from our collective minds, even her own mind. She must now be written into the histories, the philosophies, the sciences, the cosmologies. This book[iv]participates in that movement along with many others at this time in the human story; wherein the female as an embodied human, is moving out of being “other” into the “norm”, into the foreground of consciousness. R. S. P. Beekes has suggested a Pre-Greek origin. In Mycenean Greek Ma-ka (trans. as Ma-ga, “Mother Gaia”) also contains the root ga-. Helen Hye-Sook Hwang (HHH): “Mago” and “Goma” are closely linked. Gom or Goma means the bear and Magoist shaman queen of the late fourth millennium BCE. Yes, I forgot about the gourd symbol for Mago/Magu. It is a container for the elixir from which one drinks. It is a common pictographic/literary theme and I have images of Magu with the gourd. Ancient Magoists depicted/perceived the universe as Nine Heavens, an equivalent to Nine States on earth for it is the lens of Nine Numerology through which they saw everything. Because ancient China removed the history of Goma, they spiritualized/philosophized the teaching of Nine Numerology. If we have Goma’s history (and the mytho-history of Old Magoism), we can perceive the meaning of Nine Heavenly directly (not through theories or analogies). Wherever and whenever the consciousness of Nine Numerology surfaces is a manifestation of Goma’s rule/civilization/religion. This will remain forever insofar as humanity continues because Nine Numerology is the principle of nature including humans. I would say that the teaching/principle of Nine Numerology is Goma’s self-redemptive soteriological gift. Insofar as we understand and honor the Nine Mago Creatrix/Nine Numerology (the female divine in general), we are endowed with the power of self-redemption. (Mago Almanac Excerpt 7) Introducing the Magoist Calendar by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang

Mago Almanac: 13 Month 28 Day Calendar (Book A) at Mago Bookstore. YEARLY LEAP DAY AND EVERY FOURTH YEAR LEAP DAY Each Sa includes a Dan of the big Sa. A Dan is equal to one day. That adds to 365 days. At the half point of the third Sa, there is a Pan of the big Sak (the year of the great dark moon). A Pan comes at a half point of Sa. This is of Beopsu (Lawful Number) 2, 5, 8. A Pan is equal to a day. Therefore, the fourth Sa has 366 days. Each year has a leap day (Dan), which makes a total of 365 days. Every fourth year is a leap year that has a leap day (Pan), which makes a total of 366 days. The Dan day comes before the New Year in the winter solstice month. And the Pan day comes before the first day of the summer solstice month in the fourth year. The above, however, does not indicate when the New Year comes. Logographic characters of Dan and Pan each suggest their meanings. While each year includes the Dan day (the morning), every fourth year has the Pan day. A unit of four years makes the Big Calendar. Dan (旦 Morning) Leap day for every first three years Pan (昄 Big) Leap day for every fourth year I have postulated that the year begins on the Dan day (one leap day), a day before New Year that comes in the month of Winter Solstice in the Norther Hemisphere. And the Pan day comes on the day before the first day of the 7th month that has Summer Solstice in the fourth year in the Norther Hemisphere. That is, each year has one extra day to make it 365 days. Every fourth year has an extra day to make it 366 days. Four years has a total of 1461 days (365×3+366), which makes the mean of 365.25 days. Considering that the month is following the sidereal period rather than the synodic period, it is inferred that the year also follows the sidereal year rather than the solar year. In fact, Magoist Calendar’s one year is very close to today’s 365.25636 days of the sidereal year compared to 365.24217 days of the solar year or the tropical year. Given that, as seen below, the Budoji mentions the tiniest discrepancy of one leap day for 31,788,900 years, the discrepancy between 365.25 and 365.25636 (0.00636 day) can be explained that the year was actually 365.25 days at the time of Budo circa 2333 BCE, 4440 years ago. In other words, there is a discrepancy of 0.12375936 seconds between 2017 CE and 2333 BCE. Regarding Lawful Numbers 2, 5, 8, it is involved as follows: 365 days (3+6+5=14, 1+4=5) Lawful Numbers 2, 5, 8 refers the unit of 365 days (364 days with one intercalary day). Further dynamics are unknown. The sidereal year refers to the time taken by the Earth to orbit the sun once with respect to the distant stars. In contrast, the solar or tropical year means the time taken by the Earth to orbit the sun once with respect to the sun. The sidereal year, 365.25636 days, is about 20 minutes and 24 seconds longer than the mean tropical year (365.24217 days) and about 19 minutes and 57 seconds longer than the average Gregorian year of 365.2425 days. The difference occurs primarily because the solar system spins on its own axis and around the Milky Way galactic center making the solar year’s observed position relative. Time is no independent concept apart from space and the agent. The very concept of time is preceded by the agent bound in a space. It is always contextualized. In Magoism, both calendar and time are born out of the cosmogonic universe, the universe that is in self-creation. Like calendar, time is to be discovered or measured. It is a numinous concept. The very concept of time testifies to the reality of the Creatrix. Time proves the orderly movement of the universe into which we are born. Calendar patterns time, whereas time undergirds calendar. How can we measure time? We are given the time of the Earth that comes from its rotation, revolution, and precession in sync with the moon and the sun (and its planets). One type of time is the solar time. The solar time is a calculation of time based on the position of the sun. Traditionally, the solar time is measured by the sundial. The solar time is, however, specific to the Earth only. It is valid only for the-same-observed-location. It is not made to be used for the time of another celestial body. For example, Mars’ solar time has to be measured independently based on its own rotation and revolution rates. The solar time is an isolated time. It is static and exclusive, not made for the time of other celestial bodies. By nature, it is unfit for connection and communication across celestial bodies. The second type is the sidereal time. The sidereal time is a time scale based on the rate of Earth’s rotations measured relative to the distant stars.[29] Because the observed position is in the far distant stars beyond the solar system, the sidereal time may as well be called an extrasolar stellar time. On February 3rd at 19:45 “Universal Time” (as it is named), Earth our Planet crosses the midpoint of Her orbit between Solstice and Equinox, though the exact time varies each year. In the Northern Hemisphere it is the Season of Imbolc – the welcoming of the Light, post-Winter Solstice, after the fullness of the dark of Winter. Imbolc, and all of the light part of the cycle, is particularly associated with the Young One/Virgin/Maiden aspect of Goddess – or Urge to Be as I have named this aspect. Imbolc may be understood as the quintessential celebration of the Virgin/Young One quality for the year – the rest of the light part of the cycle celebrates Her processes, but this Seasonal Moment is a celebration of Her … identifying with Her. She is the New Young One, the Promise of Life, the Urge to Be. Her purity is Her singularity of purpose. She is spiritual warrior. Her inviolability is Her determination to Be … nothing to do with unbroken hymens of the dualistic and patriarchal mind. The Virgin is the essential “yes” to Being – not the “no” She was turned into. Austen stories Her as an image of Eurynome, Goddess of All Things who danced upon the waves in the beginning and laid the Universal Egg. She appears very self-expressive: perhaps a great image of a self-expressive Universe. She integrates animal and human, earth and sky, before dualism existed. I choose her as a Virgin image because of this integrity, and her ecstatic expression. Diana (Neumann Plate 161) Rome. She carries the Flame – is classically Her own person. … not so much “independent” as it may be thought of culturally, as “self-knowing”. She came to be associated with the Greek Artemis: they are sister Goddesses. The Horned Goddess (p. 138 Austen) 6000 B.C.E. Africa – associated with dance and healthy life-force – rain and fertility. She is of the ancient Amazon tribes of what is now known as Algeria. Even today amongst these people, Austen says: “the Tauregs, the women are independent, while the men only appear in public veiled”. Vajravarahi (p.124 Austen) 1600’s C.E. Vajravarahi, show me how to be powerful and compassionate at the same time – let me know that these qualities are one force. Teach me to feel the beauty, power and eroticism of my own being. Photography by Sara Wright I gaze out my bedroom window and hear yet another golden apple hit the ground. The vines that hug the cabin and climb up the screens are heavy with unripe grapes and the light that is filtered through the trees in front of the brook is luminous – lime green tipped in gold – My too sensitive eyes are blessedly well protected by this canopy of late summer leaves. The maples on the hill are losing chlorophyll and are painting the hollow with splashes of bittersweet orange and red. The dead spruces by the brook will probably collapse this winter providing Black bears with even more precious ants and larvae to eat in early spring. I only hope that some bears will survive the fall slaughter to return to this black bear sanctuary; in particular two beloved young ones… Mushrooms abound, amanitas, boletes morels, puff balls, the latter two finding their way into my salads. The forest around my house is in an active state of becoming with downed limbs and sprouting fungi becoming next year’s soil. The forest floor smells so sweet that all I can imagine is laying myself down on a bed of mosses to sleep and dream. The garden looks as tired as I am; lily fronds droop, yellowing leaves betraying the season at hand. Bright green pods provide a startling contrast to fading scarlet bee balm. Wild asters are abundant and goldenrod covers the fields with a bright yellow garment. Every wild bush has sprays of berries. My crabapple trees are bowed, each twig heavy with winter fruit. Most of the birds have absconded to the fields that are ripe with the seeds of wild grasses. The mourning doves are an exception – they gather together each dawn waiting patiently for me to fill the feeder. In the evening I am serenaded by soft cooing. One chicken hawk hides in the pine, lying in wait for the unwary…Just a few hummingbirds remain…whirring wings and twittering alert me to continued presence as they settle into the cherry tree to sleep, slipping into a light torpor with these cool September nights… Spiders are spinning their egg cases, even as they prepare to die. I can still find toads hopping around the house during the warmest hours of the day. Although the grass is long I will not mow it for fear of killing these most precious and threatened of species. I am heavily invested in seeing these toads burrow in to see another spring. My little frogs sit on their lily pads seeking the warmth of a dimming afternoon sun. Soon they too will slumber below fallen leaves or mud. I am surrounded by such beauty, and so much harvest bounty that even though I am exhausted I take deep pleasure out of each passing day of this glorious month of September, the month of my birth. Unlike many folks, for me, moving into the dark of the year feels like a blessing. Another leave -taking is almost upon me, and I am having trouble letting go of this small oasis that I have tended with such care for more than thirty years… I don’t know what this winter will bring to my modest cabin whose foundation is crumbling under too much moisture and too many years of heavy snow. In the spring extensive excavation will begin. A new foundation must be poured and this work will destroy the gardens I have loved, the mossy grounds around the south end of the house that I have nurtured for so long. In this season of letting go I must find a way to lay down my fears, and release that which I am powerless to change. Somehow… I have no idea what I will return to except that I have made it clear that none of my beloved trees be harmed. I am grateful that Nature is mirroring back to me so poignantly that letting go is the way through: That this dying can provide a bedrock foundation for another spring birth. As a Daughter of the Earth I lean into ancient wisdom, praying that this exhausted mind and body will be able to follow suit. (Meet Mago Contributor) Sara Wright.

I have made short spaces in the video where it could be paused. For more full participation in the ceremony, you could have some past photos of yourself, an altar with ancestor photos, a gingerbread snake, some apples sliced up, and some apple juice. The script for this Samhain ceremony is offered in Chapter 4 of my book A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony, with all acknowledgements and references there. However I want to acknowledge here the inspiration and some text of Robin Morgan’s poem “The Network of the Imaginary Mother” in her book Lady of the Beasts, for which I was given permission in my book. I also acknowledge here the paraphrase of some words by Starhawk in her book The Spiral Dance, used in the rite of Sailing to a New World. I also use a line from the poem Song of Hecate by Bridget McKern. The elements of Water, Fire, Earth and Air on the altar in this video are placed in directions that are appropriate to my region in the Southern Hemisphere, and East Coast Australia: you may place yours differently, and transliterate when I mention the direction (which I do minimally). For the rite of the Transformation Journey (remembering old selves) I use an adaptation of a children’s game “In and Out the Windows”, where each participant travels in and out of upraised and linked arms of the circle, and when ‘in’ may speak and /or show photos of themselves from the past. Some may choose to remember any self from the entire evolutionary story, with whom they would like to identify. The game seems appropriate to what each being does existentially in so many ways, over the eons as well as in our personal lives. The chant can be found on YouTube. The photos used are a collage of footage and photos from the 2024 Samhain ceremony at my place in Wakka Wakka country, South East Queensland Australia, and from previous Samhain ceremonies I facilitated over the decades in MoonCourt, Goddess ceremonial space in NSW Australia, Darug and Gundungurra country. Part III: Archaeology Bespeaks What Ideological Hetero-sexuality Can’t Do Our story-tellers informed us that Gaeyang Halmi is venerated and celebrated on January 14th annually on the lunar calendar. There are two separate rituals performed on that day. Villagers, both men and women, offer their ritual ceremony in the morning in Confucian style. The officiant must preserve the purification ritual, confining oneself to home to avoid ominous affairs for a week prior to the ceremony. After the ceremony of the villagers, Mudang groups come from outside the town and offer their Shaman rituals. A cleavage between two groups is still freshly detected in their narratives. While villagers conform to the Confucian style rituals with a despising but curious eye for the female-centered Shaman rituals, Mudangs are much more powerful in their capacities to command people, spirits, and materials. The Shamanic ritual celebration is fairly well-known domestically as well as overseas to the Chinese and the Japanese, according to our lore transmitters. People from China and Japan come to join the Mudang rituals, a vestige of the intercultural celebration that may have originated in ancient times, a point to be elaborated later. What caught my attention was the fact that the ritual celebration is known as the Ritual of Yongwang (the Dragon King) not the Ritual of Gaeyang Halmi. Our two narrators, Mr. Jeong Dong-Uk and Ms. Jeong Si-Geum, brother and sister, testified contradictorily vis-à-vis the Dragon King. Mr. Jeong mentioned that Gaeyang Halmi is the wife of Dragon King,[i] whereas Ms. Jeong spoke of Gaeyang Halmi as a solo deity without spouse. Ms. Jeong sternly said, “She was alone [without spouse]. She had eight daughters.” “It is said that there used to be a house wherein Gaeyang Halmi and her eight daughters lived together. I saw the cooking pots and household things in the ruin,” added Ms. Jeong. [Interestingly, the motif that she saw the cooking pots and other kitchen items in the ruin reminded me of other Mago folk stories from other regions. People seem to take such artifacts as pots and household things discovered in the ruin as an indication that the myth of Mago Halmi who is told to have lived in the place is plausible.] The topos of “the dragon king” was likely added later on to comply with Confucian ideology. In fact, none of our narrators mentioned the dragon king as the main deity of the Suseong Shrine. The fact that it is called the ritual of the dragon king suggests another layer of erosion/castration/dethronement done to the supreme divinity of Gaeyang Halmi.

(Essay 2 Part 2) Why Do I Love Korean Historical Dramas? by Anna Tzanova, M.A.

Part 2 ENGAGING THE MIND It makes me cringe every time someone calls Korean drama, especially the historical genre, a soap opera. The fact that they are TV series doesn’t necessarily make them foamy. Quite the contrary, they are full of substance. They don’t go on and on for years, season after season. On average, most of them are 24 to 60, one-hour-long episodes. Some have fewer episodes, some have more episodes, but after they are done—we move on. It’s a good way to learn non-attachment. Korean historical drama is thought provoking. It is multidimensional in the way it presents characters and stories. Plots are well developed, intelligent, intriguing, and entertaining. Yes, there are some predictable outcomes, but there is also a lot of substance and artistic craftiness, as well as clever twists and fascinating surprises. Sageuk (Korean Historical Drama) can teach about history and culture, and also about mythology, philosophy, and spirituality. It reminds us of the values that are fading or have vanished in Western culture in the 21st century. The importance of subtleties in life is shown through plot development, rhythm, and acting. Reoccurring themes convey lessons like patience, acceptance, forgiveness, trust, integrity, perseverance, and courage… That is, the true meaning and practice of those. There is depth in the understanding of the writers, as well as in the corresponding depiction by actors. There is profundity, which evokes a reciprocal reaction in the viewers’ mind. The characters are likable—and their outlook on life and their behavior are admirable. They evolve and influence each other and their environment. There is this definitive sophistication in expression of emotion. Something akin to meditation. In Sageuk, “silence speaks”. Thus, the experience is not only pleasant, relaxing and/or exciting, but many times healing and enlightening. Confucian ideas mixed with Buddhist and Daoist ideals motivate the protagonists’ kind and considerate actions. A particularly valued quality in Korea is “착하다/착한 [chakhada/chakhan]”. I first heard it mentioned in an interview[i]/book[ii] presentation of Euny Hong. The translation in the dictionary reads, “good, nice, good-natured, kind-hearted, meek, obedient, docile, gentle, quiet.” Actually, it is all this and much more. It is a trait that when faced with, being cynical—as we often are in the 21st century—we can easily dismiss as being naive, gullible, submissive, and even foolish. However, in the words of Rumi, “Before you speak, let your words pass through three gates: at the first, you ask yourself, ‘Is it true?’ At the second gate ask, ‘Is it necessary?’ At the third gate ask, ‘Is it kind?’”. The heroines and heroes in Korean historical drama follow this teaching in words and action. Most epitomize pure heartedness. There is a child-like sweetness about many of them—come to think of it, by losing innocence, has humanity really gained wisdom? In the online edition of Entertainment Weekly, I encountered a quote by Jacqueline Sia, Director of Video Operations of New York based DramaFever—one of the largest databases of subtitled Asian films and TV programs. In speaking about Korean drama she states: “Portrayal of love is a little more PG,”[iii] an observation that strikes any novice in the genre. We have become used to quick climaxes, crash-and-burn liaisons, as well as media glorified dysfunctional relationships. The predominant understanding of sex (and certainly the one staring at us from the TV and cinema screens) is hurried, flat, and linear. There is a disconnect between sex and love. Profanity and violence pour daily from everywhere. Exhibiting symptoms of an empath can easily be diagnosed as a psychiatric condition, and yet we are conditioned to be less and less sensitive. In this background, complex and refined emotional states, longing, embodied sacredness, and the act of leaving much to the viewers’ imagination, seem to be suitable only for children. Are we awake and mature enough to realize that all the psychological and social implications of the well-manipulated programming we are subjugated to is already bearing fruit in ‘real life’?
