A space with an edge beyond which I end and you begin. I am making space in rejection of the belief that there is not room enough for me to exist, for me to shine and storm, to inconvenience and disrupt, to radiate and transform. I am reaching in through the flesh and the sinew, I am pulling on bones, stretching out muscles, making room within for all that I was born to be. I am being stretched and wrung, squeezing out all that is not love, all that would keep me small, all that would have me believe that I am not enough. I am wrestling out the voice that would tell me that I am only safe in the inbetween spaces of dark matter. I am making space for me to birth myself into being. I am making space in my pelvis so that the three million year old woman can come to rest there, and guide my every step from her ancient womb. I am making space in my heart for a thousand orgasmic blossoms to bloom, ecstatically fragrant, thunderously robust, exquisitely tender. I am making space in defiance of the story that I am a worthy receptacle for other people’s pain, the contract that I make with them to take them into myself and have them seek their healing through me. I am making space in order that when I travel out to the far reaches of the cosmos a part of me stays close to home, to hold my self worth by the hearth fire with the Grandmothers, not allowing me to take all of me, all the way out there, in search of the loving boundary for the small, waiting child within me, because in this space that I have made for myself I know that I am loved and infinitely lovable, and here I am safe. I am making a space with an edge through which I can filter your opinion of me, so that even if you don’t like me, I can still like myself. I am making space for the fierce Mumma roar, the ancient wild protectress, who is unshakable in her mercy for the vulnerable and the innocent, for the unloved and the wounded. I am making space in my throat for the full bodied blooming of my song, the voice of my power to meet the world unbound and free, blossoming and bold. (Essay 2) The Role of Castration in the Worship of the Great Mother Goddess Cybele by Francesca Tronetti, Ph.D.

[Author’s Note: This essay and its sequels are part of a longer chapter for a book I am working on. The book is based on my dissertation research at the Maetreum of Cybele in Palenville NY. I wanted to share some of my historical research and I will be presenting more essays on Mother Goddess worship in the ancient world and contemporary interest in the Feminine Divine.] Attis, the son/lover of Cybele was not part of her mythology until around 1000 BCE. It was after this time that the vegetation god Attis was introduced and became part of the legends. The legends which reference Attis are primarily found in the Anatolian worship of Cybele and are believed by Stone to be surviving remnants of the earlier Goddess religion when she was the unnamed Great Mother.[1] While there are multiple variations of the myth of Attis, the most common tale concerning the death of Attis is this. Wikimedia Commons For Attis, the princely young shepherd of the fields had once been set upon by a lustful monster and, in revulsion and lest he be forced into unfaithfulness to his Holy Mother, tore his genitals from his body and died beneath an evergreen tree while his fallen blood nourished flowers beneath him. There his fallen body lay lifeless until Cybele herself came upon it. She wrapped his mutilated body in mourning cloth and took him, and the tree near which he had died, to the deep, dark cave where she lived on the summit of Mount Ida.[2] In a later myth, Attis resurrects after three days and becomes Cybele’s lover. The Romans were so enamored with Attis that each year they held a festival celebrating Attis’ death and resurrection. However, Attis was not the only figure who underwent castration to show his devotion to his deity. Castration appears in many ancient writings regarding Goddess religions, and there are repeated references to eunuch priests in ancient Sumer, Babylon, Canaan, and Anatolia.[3] The classical texts put the number of eunuch priests as high as five thousand in some cities.[4] In Anatolia, the eunuch priests referred to themselves as Attis to signify their commitment to the Goddess.[5] There are representations of priests in female clothing, such as the eunuch priests are said to have worn, found throughout the Near East. Stone quotes Stylianos Alexiou, former Curator of the Antiquities of Crete, who believes that: The priests and musicians wearing long feminine robes fall into a special category. This practice has led to the surmise that perhaps owing to Syrian influence; there existed companies of eunuch priests in the Cretan palaces. During a later period, the eunuch priests of Cybele and Attis in Asia Minor formed a similar class.[6] According to this theory the males castrated themselves in service to the Goddess. However, some scholars disagree with this interpretation. Stone theorizes that as men began to gain power, possibly as society shifted from egalitarian or matrifocal customs and became more patriarchal, they replaced priestesses even in Goddess religions. The priests may have initially earned their place in the temple by identifying with the Goddess’ castrated son/lover and undergoing castration themselves. Their castration may also have been an attempt to imitate the female priestesses who held power in the temples.[7] G. R. Taylor, who wrote the abridged version of Briffault’s The Mothers, agrees with this interpretation. Taylor writes, “The first step in the limitation of the status of women was to take over from them the monopoly of the religious function.”[8] Graves points out that “All priestly robes, skirts, aprons, sottanas are indeed everywhere of an essentially feminine character.”[9] Another possibility, one supported by the modern Cybeline priestesses, is that some of these men were what we today identify as transsexual or transgender. These men removed their maleness through ritual castration in order to identify as a woman and wear women’s robes. For whatever reason the priests castrated themselves, they did eventually take much of the power from the female priestesses during the Classical Period. However, even as the introduction of the Indo-European sky gods usurped the place of the Goddesses, which were diminished and sometimes changed into evil monsters,[10] humankind could not eliminate the feminine from this new version of the cosmos. The Goddess was kept alive by her inclusion in the male-centered religious pantheons as mothers, wives, daughters, and consorts. Though her ancient function as Mother of All Things was temporarily eliminated during this patriarchal period, mystery cults devoted to the worship of Demeter, Isis, and Cybele did remain active during this time until the rise of Christianity and the closing of the shrines and temples to the Goddess by the fourth century CE.[11] (To be continued) (Meet Mago Contributor) Francesca Tronetti, Ph.D. [1] Stone, When God was a Woman, 146. (Art) Cailleach, The Queen of Winter by Judith Shaw

The Cailleach (KAL-y-ach), which literally translates as the “Veiled One” is an ancient Goddess whose origins are unknown. When the Celts arrived in Ireland and Scotland she was there. Over time Her name came to mean “old wife” or “old woman”. And yet she was thought to never grow old, an all powerful, ageless, Goddess of transformation. In one of her stories, Cailleach, as an old hag, seeks love from the hero. If he accepts Her, She then transforms into a beautiful young woman, symbolizing the transformation occurring in the depths of winter when the seeds lay dormant in the earth. Yet alive within this dormancy is the promise of rebirth in the spring. She is the guardian of the life force, finding and nourishing the seeds, commanding the power of life and death. As the final phase of the Triple Goddess, she rules the eternal wheel of reincarnation. Cailleach personifies death and the transformative power of darkness. She leads us through death to rebirth. The Cailleach, a Dark Goddess of nature, is clearly one with the land. Sometimes depicted with one eye, She sees beyond duality peering into the Oneness of all Being. She is the embodiment of winter, clothing the land with the whiteness of snow. The sacred stones are Her special places. She leaps from mountaintop to mountaintop, dropping rocks to create sacred hills, the Sidhe. She carries a slachdam, the Druidic rod or a hammer with which she wields power over the seasons and the weather, unleashing powerful and cleansing storms.

‘En-trancing Gaia’s Womb through Seasonal Ceremony: Re-creating Her Sacred Site’ by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

In the earliest of Her stories, Gaia – also known as “Ge”, meaning Earth – was the possessor of the oracle in Delphi, the place at the foot of Mount Parnassus in Greece, that was said to be the font of sacred knowledge, the navel of the world – the Omphalos of Greek tradition. It was Gaia’s Wisdom that was being listened for, and continued to be, even though the names of its ruling deities changed. Earth – Ge, Gaia – was understood as the “primeval prophetess.”[1] To listen to Her one could sleep “in a holy shrine” with an ear upon the ground [2] (and it is interesting how that expression “keep your ear to the ground” survives, to speak of how one might really know). Her priestesses often sat on a tripod over vapours arising from a crevice: a tripod perhaps because of the holy Three being significant, and also perhaps practical, so the priestess could sit with her legs astride opening her bodymind. It is now thought that the site of this oracle was originally located high up on the shoulder of Mount Parnassus in “a mystery centre” called the Corycian Cave, and that it was presided over by Three Sisters – a triad of Goddesses called the Thriae.[3] The Thriae are said to have invented the art of prophecy – their name means “little stones”, which story tells, they threw into an urn of water and watched how they danced. These Three Sisters taught the later gods the art of “divination”, which I translate to “knowing the mind of the divine”, though they themselves often came to be referred to merely as “nymphs” which in patriarchal times enabled a lowering of their status. There has also been much note in various texts, of another Three who were “bee-maidens”, with a very similar name – the Thriai – also said to be the teachers of divination at Delphi. Some researchers address them as the same entity – as “the Triple Muse of Divination at Delphi”[4]. By whatever name, it was They who spoke Gaia’s portents/potentialities to those who wished to listen. We may glean from these fragments of story found scattered in many texts – these shattered pieces of ancient vessel that once held a matrifocal culture – that it was from within the Corycian Cave that Gaia spoke to Her people, Her very offspring … in the earliest of stories of this tradition. Later, some time in the eighth century B.C.E., the Cave was abandoned for the present location and later re-dedicated to Apollo. This Cave, and the earliest times at Delphi, may be thought of as Gaia’s Womb, which in our time is no longer simply located on this mountain in Greece: many now globally name our whole Planet as Gaia. And Her Womb, the sacred Navel of the World, may be understood to be located in any number of places – wherever one chooses to sit (or dance or play or lie down) and open to receive Her teachings. Such a site then becomes the primary Temple – the “holy shrine”: that is, the Place that houses the sense/sensation of the real Space and Time in which we most truly live, the Centre/Mother who holds us at all times … of whom we may become conscious. Such consciousness – “sacred awareness” – may be named and experienced as “trance” … and indeed such awareness is “en-trancing”: we may en-trance Her sacred place/site. One’s mind will be changed. Shift will happen. Gaia’s Cave is within as much as anywhere – in the dark sentient space that each being mostly consists of: there is no need to go anywhere. The Sacred Space may be called forth to consciousness, from the Womb in which we are immersed. Sacred Space – an Omphalos – may be re-created, for Her to rise up from the depths within and speak. She has done so under the guise of many names and places in different sacred traditions of the globe … Earth Mother, known as Gaia in Western philosophical/religious texts, and now named as an entity in scientific texts, has been recognised as the Ground of lore/law by which to live and act. In Australia this Law has been called “Tjukurpa”[5], by Indigenous people. The ritual celebration of Her Creativity expressed in the flow of the Seasonal Moments may be an entrance to Gaia’s “cave”, a womblike Place where one can be held: a method of becoming intimate with Her[6]. The circle of the year that is paced with the consistent year-long practice of seasonal ritual, may be a refuge, a safe place that can be trusted – it becomes a Place, a sacred site. Earth’s journey around Sun is a sacred site, and joining one’s consciousness to that journey – which we all make every day, whether conscious or not – makes sacred one’s journey. One’s ear will be to the Ground. The sacred space that is created by such practice of Her whole annual wheel of seasonal transitions, is a Womb that holds one … one may come to feel held in Her Dynamic of Creativity, where She speaks. It may be considered a task for those who desire Her and know Her: to bring Her forth in this way. I do suggest a small tangible and portable wheel of stones that represents the Seasonal Moments of Earth’s journey … and hence one’s own journey of practice of these ritual celebrations. Such a modest construction re-assembles Her Womb for one’s bodymind, within which one may sit. And the “tripod” upon which one is sitting will be the Triple Muse – the triple-faced Dynamic of never-ending renewal that is celebrated in this complete cycle/circle. Such an assembly is a medicine wheel, for it locates one in the Present. The whole annual wheel of Seasonal Moments/transitions holds within it awareness of the dark depths upon which the present is built – the past: and all that is gestating within these depths …

Spider Redgold is a Caucasian lesbian woman of spirit, descended through her motherlines from Travellers and through her fatherlines she can trace her blood to the Viking invasions of Yorkshire around 1100CE and then to Long Meg tribe. (Prose and Shamanic Journeying) Season of Hibernation and Seeing – A Journey in Chalk by Claire Dorey

Art by Clair Dorey The sky is vast and tempestuous. I’m at Stonehenge, standing face to face with huge upright and toppled stones, pondering 5,000 years of touch that wore rock smooth like whale skin. Lichens bristle where hands can’t reach. This is a place of old magic and visions. Bitter winds slash across the chalk plain, ice-whips sifting out mind clutter, opening up ancient conversations with a long dead Shaman. She is buried in the seated position, in a mound, waiting to be found, her story waiting to be told. She sits next to a man, lying on his back, who may have been the ‘Year King’. Like Lilith, she wants us to know her head remains higher than his. This energy is still part of the psycho-emotional landscape here. I’m tuning in to see where she takes me. “When the air is clean and cold it is impossible to be anything other than present,” she whispers. Her shadow drifts between the stones. Cloak of owl, veil of teeth, necklace of bones rattling a rhythm, deer antler antennae missing nothing. In the season of hibernation and dreaming it is the doe who keeps her horns. Shaman sees the world through an animal eye. Nostrils twitch. Scent of wolf. Mask of soot. Blade of flint. Death is watching, hiding in the night, waiting for stragglers who fall asleep in the snow. She is the Winter Deer and Alchemist, a gold-worker, creating with light and fire and flaming, liquefied metal to produce beautiful things. Perhaps the long forgotten Goddess, residing here, is an ancestor of light and metal-worker Brigid, in Her Winter Hag aspect. The ancestral flame illuminates stories of other Light Keepers – guardians of the ‘Spark of Creation’. The patriarch seized ownership of the story of fire, banishing the female fire spirit to the fogs of the forgotten. Brigid was canonised. Hestia was domesticated and the Vestal Virgins were whipped if the flame went out. The punishment for being sexually active was to be buried alive. Shaman chalks my eyes and I see the Neolithic past through a pin-hole in time. A diaspora descends – a festival – a ‘coming together’ of time and place and common purpose. Fire spinners, shamans, priestesses, hog roasters, story tellers, healers and drummers move in the folds of the shadows, back lit by blood-red, bone-fires raging on the horizon. Scents of resin and pheromones mingle in the mist. Life force is celebrated in all it’s beauty and pyrotechnic bloodiness. When pleasure is gone death rushes in. This was never a place of static ceremony. Slither of dawn. Spark of sun. “The transcendent mechanism of the awakening.” – Anais Nin. Laser precise, a sunbeam stirs the megalith from slumber. Circle of trilithon gateways amplifying a spiralling mass of celestial harmonics, these slabs of rock talk of a reciprocity of opposites. This is where the Cretaceous East meets the Jurassic West. Head in the sky, roots piercing the soil, right down there in the guts of it, it’s a chthonic stabbing of Mother Earth, in what is often described as spearing the serpent. According to tests done at nearby Avebury Henge the electro-magnetic force within the stone circle is strongest in daytime, with energy resting at night. Solstice could be a powerful time for waking or subduing the latent power of the megalith. Photo copyrighted by Claire Dorey Is it all about the head space? Are Stone Circles Neolithic particle colliders for the human soul, drawing down cosmic energy, drawing up Earth energy, altering consciousness, opening the pineal gland, creating order from chaos, or creating chaos from order, merging auric fields with all matter? “The millions of particles of magnetite floating inside the skull and the pineal gland [are] sensitive to geomagnetic fields [leading] to the creation of the hallucinogen DMT.” – They’re Alive! Megalithic Sites Are More than Just Stone, Ancient Origins. We focus on the megaliths but not much attention is given to the sacred Earth they stand upon because we have moved away from the Earth Religions. I didn’t think I’d be pondering chalk pits but this is where Shaman guides me. Stonehenge stands upon a chalk plateau. Silbury Hill is built of chalk. Avebury Henge is encircled by a chalk bank and ditch. Before the grass grew over, these sacred earthworks must have dazzled in sun and moon light. Chalk was carved into precious artefacts, including drums and tablets. The ‘disputed’ Chalk Goddess (Grimes Graves, Norfolk) was found on a chalk alter in a flint mine. Her spherical, Full Moon, Earth Mother body swells with the primordial, chalk magic that shaped the landscape. Why did Neolithic people dig a vast arc of cavernous pits encircling nearby Durrington Walls? Were these chthonic piercings used as fire pits, purifying the boundaries of sacred space with chalk and flame, amplifying the energy of whatever took place here? Did the 56 chalk pits at Stonehenge (Aubrey Holes) also harness Earth Magic? I may never understand the Neolithic psyche but I can explore other spiritual practices to see what they do. In alternative healing, chalk is considered grounding and purifying, whilst enhancing out-of-body experiences, spirit guide connection and psychic powers. In spell-craft chalk is used for drawing boundaries. In Edo and Igbo communities sacred chalk is used in birth and death rituals. “Chalk around the eyes signifies an ability to see beyond the visible world and into the world of the spirits.” – Paul Basu, Glory Chika-Kanu, Nzu, orhue, scared chalk, Re-Entanglements. When nature dies back, the ‘winter wait’ is the time for shamanic journeying into the collective womb consciousness. I wonder if, when they dug right down into the bare, winter-bones of those chalk pits, using deer antlers to carve deep into the folds of Mother Earth, Shaman presided over purifying ritual burials and exhumations. Perhaps the living also experienced what it is like to hibernate below ground, like Persephone did, learning about stillness, listening to Mother Earth. “Dig up all that you buried,” says Shaman. …

Both have the capacity to become so hypercritical that the movement itself transcends common human compassion and understanding. Mother Teresa was a human being with flaws and goodness. She had a public image and private fears and insecurities.. l like all of us. She lived her life the best way she knew how.. Like all of us. She made mistakes.. misjudgments.. Like all of us. But she also DID help and inspire others to help too. It is this dualistic thinking that forces people to feel like they have to assign the label of good or bad and no in between. None of us are all good or all bad.. so it seems to me that to label her has an evil traitor who let people die is no better than labeling her an Angel of god who did no wrong. She was a woman who lived her life and managed to come to worldwide fame and inspire others to love at a time and in an institution that was highly patriarchal and women were not raised up at all. Mother Goddesses in Africa were known for great nurturing and care symbolized by carrying a baby and also carried a machete on the other side for justice. This was the fine balance of wholeness…she was the gentle rain and the storm.. This was binary, but not one or the other but both.. Opposite ends of the same pole. [H]: I’m having a powerful visceral effect from this conversation. I feel as if I’m going to vomit violently. Mother Teresa comes to me in dreams and meditations. Makes me wonder what kind of person I’m seen as if I attract her energy. I have always felt so much love for her. Naa Ayele Kumari: If she comes in your dreams and it has been healing for you… Allow it/ her to continue to be healing for you. Its all about love and anything that is not love… Leave it be.. Vomiting is rejecting something that doesn’t belong with you. Embrace love my sister. Antonia McGuire: I think we may all agree that all belief systems initially began to promote a sense of goodness or fairness to some degree, but over time they are corrupted and produce both advantages and disadvantages. Donna Snyder: Yes, Gandhi, too. Back in the 90’s when I was in a band/performance art troupe called Central Nervous System, I shocked all the guys in the band coming out with an improv in response to a melody played on a banjo tuned like a sitar, called exactly that-Yes, Gandhi. Now make no mistake, he is one of my heroes, devoid of the falsified sentimentality that clings to MT. Gandhi’s work was for the world, for the masses, not for the appropriately humbled. Yet I spoke out about his sexual practices, his use of female bodies. Telling the truth about a hero requires courage. Retreating into a blind defense of a myth is a form of ethical cowardice. Anne Wilkerson Allen: Strangely I had a discussion with someone about the “hero’s journey” moving from metaphorical to physical being part of the problem…..when the “demons” are human instead of our own flaws, there seems to be a tendency to point the finger (and gun barrel) elsewhere. [B]: Fascinating & thought-provoking conversation, all. I think the biggest stumbling block I have with MT is how her acceptance of the dogma of the Catholic church blinded her to seeing and then being moved by the suffering of others enough to do something to alleviate & not vicariously celebrate it. No wonder she “suffered a lack of connection with the Divine”. This crisis with her spirituality seems to have been divorced from her and others’ body wisdom. Self-abnegation (perhaps not the same as “sacrifice”) ultimately backfires because some small part of us insists, “I am worthy!” To which I say, “We are all worthy!” [H]: I do not see or feel that she vicariously celebrated the suffering of others. I feel that she devoted her life to deeply loving and serving the poorest of the poor. I have not been to Calcutta and I have also seen some unimaginable poverty in India that is not like anything that I’ve been exposed to before. I truly believe that she had a very deep way of working with suffering that is not necessarily visible to those more accustomed to modern medical intervention and the resources available for such. I have participated in a very small amount of poverty medicine and the resources that we take for granted are just not readily available to MANY. Leslene Della Madre, California USA midwifingdeath.com Diane Horton Sacred Goddess Sisterhood Each of our stories as women who have come to embrace the Goddess are varied and interesting. Certainly interesting to each other, as our spirits long to resonate with another who has had a similar journey. Mine began while I was still a member of the Episcopal Church and a Christian. But relative to many, it was not that long ago, just 18 years. Some women have been knowing and worshiping the Goddess for more than 30 years, some have only just come to the reawakening and re-membering recently. Some of us call ourselves witches, some priestesses, or both. Some do not identify with either of those words and simply say they have immersed themselves in the Divine Feminine, or that they worship the Goddess. Some will say they are Pagan or Wiccan or Dianic Wiccan. Whatever we call ourselves, or do not call ourselves, we are all Sisters in Goddess, those who worship the Great Mother. And though our numbers are growing, seemingly almost daily, we are still in a minority. We need those who are articulate to voice our views and we need wise teachers who can share practices, philosophy and knowledge with those who are eager for such spiritual food. One of the great things about this Goddess Path is that, although there is much written and oral knowledge to be had for those who seek it, the deepest part of this path is experiential. Personal experience with Goddess, deep within ourselves, and having our eyes opened to Her all around us all the time, seeing and feeling Her magic in our lives, knowing Her love and nurturance in our hearts. We have no dogma, no set of rules or commandments, no rigid ideology. We have our own hearts to guide us into all acts of love and pleasure, compassion, humility and reverence which are Her rituals. When we express strength, hold our power and honor life, as well as giggle and laugh, those are Her rituals, too. There are the Women’s Blood Mysteries, which set women apart from men who worship the Goddess, but that should serve to unite women in a strong eternal bond, not alienate men. There is no place for hierarchy. We are all women equal to each other as daughters of the Goddess. We cannot, we must not, allow the patriarchal mindset to contaminate Feminine Spirituality. No hierarchy, no duality, no controlling others. If we want to see a world in which the Divine Feminine is prominent, the world that many of us believe is coming, we need to take a good, hard look at ourselves in the mirror of our Sisters’ eyes and all of us individually commit ourselves to Unity, Sisterhood and Unconditional Love. That does not mean we will never disagree, and sometimes disagree vehemently, but it does mean we do not allow those disagreements to fracture us as a body of women or to damage or destroy our Sisterhood. There are many teachers who have their own followings of students, their own coursework, their own publications and newsletters, their own festivals they work all year to organize and make manifest. This is a good thing! Especially with the national economy the way it is now many, many women cannot afford to travel very far from their homes, so the fact that there are festivals in diverse parts of the country is no doubt just as the Goddess desires. Those who know of Her and hear Her call are greatly benefited by all of these in mind, heart and spirit. We all need each other. We who can spread this information far and wide need to do so, not just think of and promote the one group or project we are involved in ourselves individually. This is the BIG PICTURE. The Passing of Last Summer’s Growth by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

The ‘passing of last Summer’s growth’ as is experienced and contemplated in the Season of Deep Autumn/Samhain, may be a metaphor for the passing of all/any that has come to fullness of being, or that has had a fullness, a blossoming of some kind, and borne fruit; and in the passing it has been received, and thus transforms. The ‘passing of last Summer’s growth’ may be in hearts and minds, an event or events, a period of time, or an era, that was a deep communion, now passed and dissolved into receptive hearts and minds, where it/they reside for reconstitution, within each unique being. Samhain is traditionally understood as ‘Summer’s end’: indeed that is what the word ‘Samhain’ means. In terms of the seasonal transitions in indigenous Old European traditions, Summer is understood as over when the Seasonal Moment of Lammas/Lughnasad comes around; it is the first marked transition after the fullness of Summer Solstice. The passing and losses may have been grieved, the bounty received, thanksgiving felt and expressed, perhaps ceremonially at Autumn Equinox/Mabon; yet now in this Season of Samhain/Deep Autumn it composts, clearly falls, as darkness and cooler/cold weather sets in, change is clearer. In the places where this Earth-based tradition arose, Winter could be sensed setting in at this time, and changes to everyday activity had to be made. In our times and in our personal lives, we may sense this kind of ending, when change becomes necessary, no longer arbitrary: and the Seasonal Moment of Samhain may be an excellent moment for expressing these deep truths, telling the deep story, and making meaning of the ending, as we witness such passing. What new shapes will emerge from the infinite well of creativity? And we may wonder what will return from the dissolution? What re-solution will be found? We may wonder what new shapes will emerge. In the compost of what has been, what new syntheses, new synergies, may come forth? Now is the time for dreaming, for drawing on the richness within, trusting the sentience, within which we are immersed, and which we are: and then awaiting the arrival, being patient with the fermentation and gestation. Seize the moment, this Moment – and converse with the depths within your own bodymind, wherein She is. Make space for the sacred conversation, the Conversing with your root and source of being, and take comfort in this presence. We may ponder what yet unkown beauty and wellness may emerge from this infinite well of creativity. The Samhain Moment in the Northern Hemisphere is 17:14 UT 7thNovember this year. A Southern Hemisphere Perspective on Place by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is an edited excerpt from the Introduction to the author’s book PaGaian Cosmology: Re-inventing Earth-based Goddess Religion, which was an outcome of her doctoral research/thesis entitled The Female Metaphor – Virgin, Mother, Crone – of the Dynamic Cosmological Unfolding: Her Embodiment in Seasonal Ritual as Catalyst for Personal and Cultural Change. This doctoral work was in turn a documentation and deeper research of the Seasonal ceremonial celebrations that the author was already engaged in for over a decade. The whole of the process is here named as her “Search”. photo credit: David Widdowson, Astrovisuals. The site of seasonal ceremonial celebrations will always be significant. In my case, the place in which I have created them has been notably in the Southern Hemisphere of out Planet Earth. The fact of my context being thus – the Southern Hemisphere – had contributed in the past to my deep internalized sense of being “other”, and dissociated from my senses, since almost all stories told were based in Northern Hemisphere perspective. Yet at the same time this context of inhabiting the Southern Hemisphere contributed to my deep awareness of Gaia’s Northern Hemisphere and Her reciprocal Seasonal Moment: thus, awareness of the whole Planet. My initial confusion about the sensed Cosmos – as a Place, became a clarity about the actual Cosmos – which remained inclusive of my sensed Cosmos. PaGaian reality – the reality of our Gaian “country” – is that the whole Creative Dynamic happens all the time, all at once. The “other”, the opposite, is always present – underneath and within the Moment. This has affected my comprehension of each Sabbat/Seasonal Moment, its particular beauty but also a fullness of its transitory nature. Many in the Northern Hemisphere – even today – have no idea that the Southern Hemisphere has a ‘different’ lunar, diurnal, seasonal perspective; and because of this there often is a rigidity of frame of reference for place, language, metaphor and hence cosmology[i]. Indeed over the years of industrialized culture it has appeared to matter less to many of both hemispheres, including the ‘author-ities’, the writers of culture and cosmos. And such ‘author-ity’ and northern-hemispheric rigidity is also assumed by many more Earth-oriented writers as well[ii]. There has been consistent failure to take into account a whole Earth perspective: for example, the North Star does not need to be the point of sacred reference – there is great Poetry to be made of the void of the South Celestial Pole. Nor need the North be rigidly associated with the Earth element and darkness, nor is there really an “up” and a “down” cosmologically speaking. A sense and accountof the Southern Hemisphere perspective with all that that implies metaphorically as well as sens-ibly, seems vitally important to comprehending and sensing a whole perspective and globe – a flexibility of mind, and coming to inhabit the real Cosmos, hence enabling what I have named as a ‘PaGaian’ cosmological perspective, a whole Earth perspective. It has also been of particular significance that my Search has been birthed in the ancient continent of Australia. It is the age of the exposed rock in this Land, present to her inhabitants in an untarnished, primal mode that is significant. This Land Herself has for millennia been largely untouched by human war, conquest and concentrated human agriculture and disturbance. The inhabitants of this Land dwelt here in a manner that was largely peaceful and harmonious, for tens of thousands of years. Therefore the Land Herself may speak more clearly I feel; one may be the recipient of direct transmission of Earth in one of her most primordial modes. Her knowledge may be felt more clearly – one may be taught by Her. I think that the purity of this transmission is a significant factor in the development of the formal research I undertook – in my chosen methodology and in what I perceived in the process, and documented; from my beginnings as a country girl, albeit below my conscious mind in the subtle realms of which I knew little, to the more conscious times of entering into the process of the Search. In this Land that birthed me, ‘spirit’ is not remote and abstract, it is felt in Her red earth[iii]. Aboriginal elder David Mowaljarlai described, “This is a spirit country”[iv], and all of Her inhabitants, including non-Indigenous, may be affected by the strength of Her organic communication. It took me until the later stages of my research to realize the need to state the importance of this particular place for the advent of the research: the significance of both the land of Australia, and the specific region of the Blue Mountains in which I was now dwelling, as well as the community of this particular region, which all lent itself to the whole process. The lateness of this perception on my part, has to do with the extent of my previous alienation; but the fact that it did occur, is perhaps at least in part attributable to the unfolding awakening to my habitat that was part of the project/process. The specific region of the “Blue Mountains” – as Europeans have named them – is significant in that I don’t think that this project/process could have happened as it did in just any region. David Abram says, “The singular magic of a place is evident from what happens there, from what befalls oneself or others when in its vicinity. To tell of such events is implicitly to tell of the particular power of that site, and indeed to participate in its expressive potency[v]”. Blue Mountains, Australia: Dharug and Gundungurra Country The Blue Mountains are impressive ancient rock formations, an uplifted ancient seabed, whose “range of rock types and topographical situations has given rise to distinct plant communities”[vi]; and the presence of this great variation of plant communities, “especially the swamps, offer an abundance and variety of food sources, as well as habitats for varied fauna”[vii]. In the season leaves should love, since it gives them leave to move through the wind, towards the ground they were watching while they hung, legend says there is a seam stitching darkness like a name. Now when dying grasses veil earth from the sky in one last pale wave, as autumn dies to bring winter back, and then the spring, we who die ourselves can peel back another kind of veil that hangs among us like thick smoke. Tonight at last I feel it shake. I feel the nights stretching away thousands long behind the days, till they reach the darkness where all of me is ancestor. I turn my hand and feel a touch move with me, and when I brush my young mind across another, I have met my mother’s mother. Sure as footsteps in my waiting self, I find her, and she brings arms that hold answers for me, intimate, waiting, bounty: “Carry me.” She leaves this trail through a shudder of the veil, and leaves, like amber where she stays, a gift for her perpetual gaze. (Poetry & Photo Essay) Pongal by Susan Hawthorne

I am a secularist rather than a ritualist, but I can’t help but be drawn into the celebrations that people make when they honour the passing of the seasons. Even as a child I felt the disconnect between Christmas and the hot dusty days of summer. When Christians invaded and colonised Australia they brought their holidays but did not consider changing the dates to match the seasons. I was in India recently, invited as a speaker at the Hindu Lit For Life Festival in Chennai where I had lived ten years ago. The last day of the festival was the first day of Pongal. A friend, feminist economist Devaki Jain, who had grown up in Chennai eighty years earlier invited me to join her in a car ride to see Pongal celebrations in the streets. This is a Tamil festival dating back at least a thousand years, a sun festival, welcoming the next six months of the sun’s journey, also a harvest festival. During this time many women produce beautiful drawings, known as kolam. In my book Cow I wrote a poem about kolam which I think says more than I can explain here. what she says about kolam where they are drawn and when is all important early morning is auspicious it sets the shape of the day the hard ground is cleaned points of white grain sprinkled she works quickly she knows her design for the day runs the powdered grain from point to point it is a mandala a yantra a sign so the forces of the universe align themselves with her intentions Back to Pongal. The festival goes for four days. On the first day, which is called Bhogi, people are on the streets with the fruits of harvest, piles of tumeric and stacks of sugar cane tied in bunches. My friend, Devaki, bought flowers to take back to her room in the hotel. The second day, called Thai Pongal, I was invited to a harvest lunch at the house of my friend Mangai who is a playwright, theatre director and human rights activist. The word ‘pongal’ means ‘boiling over’ or’ overflow’ and I saw this in the cooking of the sweetened rice dish into which each of the twelve people present poured some water and milk as it almost overflowed the pot. This sweet rice dish was added to the collection of other dishes on the table. I cannot tell you what they were, but the meal was delicious. After lunch everyone relaxed, someone sang, we talked and caught up on news. The third day, is called Maatu Pongal, and cattle are at the centre of celebrations on that day. I don’t know if this line up of cattle had anything to do with the day’s celebration but there they were tied up alongside a very busy main road. These were not cows and I did not see any cows with decorated horns and flowers on their heads. on that day as I have on other occasions. On the fourth day, Kaanum Pongal, things begin to wind down. One of my co-speakers at the festival said she would be visiting family members on that day. The kolams are drawn again, sugar cane is consumed and people go back to their daily lives. What I liked about being in Tamil Nadu during the Pongal festival is that it felt absolutely right. The time of the year, the connection with harvest, so I did not feel the discomfort I so often feel in the midst of the out-of-season commercialised holidays as they are celebrated in Australia. Lammas – the Sacred Consuming by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

Lammas, the first seasonal transition after Summer Solstice, may be summarised as the Season that marks and celebrates the Sacred Consuming, the Harvest of Life. Many indigenous cultures recognised the grain itself as Mother … Corn Mother being one of those images – She who feeds the community, the world, with Her own body: the Corn, the grain, the food, the bread, is Her body. She the Corn Mother, or any other grain Mother, was/is the original sacrifice … no need for extraordinary heroics: it is the nature of Her being. She is sacrificed, consumed, to make the people whole with Her body (as the word “sacrifice” means “to make whole”). She gives Herself in Her fullness to feed the people …. the original Communion. In cultures that preceded agriculture or were perhaps pastoral – hunted or bred animals for food – this cross-quarter day may not have been celebrated, or perhaps it may have been marked in some other way. Yet even in our times when many are not in relationship with the harvest of food directly, we may still be in relationship with our place: Sun and Earth and Moon still do their dance wherever you are, and are indeed the Ground of one’s being here … a good reason to pay attention and homage, and maybe as a result, and in the process, get the essence of one’s life in order. One does not need to go anywhere to make this pilgrimage … simply Place one’s self. The seasonal transition of Lammas may offer that in particular, being a “moment of grace” – as Thomas Berry has named the seasonal transitions, when the dark part of the day begins to grow longer, as the cloak of darkness slowly envelopes the days again: it is timely to reflect on the Dark Cosmos in Whom we are, from Whom we arise and to Whom we return – and upon that moment when like Corn Mother we give ourselves over. This reflection is good, will serve a person and all – to live fully, as well as simply to be who we are: this dark realm of manifesting is the core of who we are. And what difference might such reflection make to our world – personal and collective – to live in this relationship with where we are, and thus who we are. We all are the grain that is harvested and all are Her harvest … perhaps one may use a different metaphor: the truth that may be reflected upon at this seasonal moment after the peaking of Sun’s light at Summer Solstice and the wind down into Autumn, is that everything passes, all fades away … even our Sun shall pass. All is consumed. So What are we part of? (I write it with a capital because surely it is a sacred entity) And how might we participate creatively? We are Food – whether we like it or not … Lammas is a good time to get with the Creative plot, though many find it the most difficult, or focus on more exoteric celebration. May we be interesting food[i]. We are holy Communion, like Corn Mother. It is a chapter on the process of the Wheel of the Year. for the Northern Hemisphere version: https://pagaian.org/pagaian-wheel-of-the-year/ It seems to me that the main agenda of the Cosmos is ongoing Creativity, “never-ending renewal” it may be termed, and that this is expressed in Earth’s Seasonal Wheel through the transitions of Autumn,Winter, Spring, Summer; and in the ubiquitous process of a Cosmic Triplicity of Space to Be, Urge to Be and this Place of Being, a dynamic that has often been imagined as the Triple Goddess. In the flow of the PaGaian Wheel of the Year, the Seasonal transitions of the Wheel and the Triplicity of the Cosmos come together. There are two celebrations of the Old One/Crone or the Cosmogenetic quality of autopoiesis creating the Space to Be; and they are Lammas/Late Summer and Samhain/Deep Autumn, which are the meridian points of the two quarters of the waxing dark phase. At Lammas, the first in the dark phase, we may identify with the dark and ancient Wise One – dissolve into Her; at Samhain, we may consciously participate in Her process of the transformation of death/the passing of all. The whole dark part of the cycle is about dissolving/dying/letting go of being – becoming – nurturing it (the midwifing of Lammas/Late Summer), stepping into the power of it (the certain departure of Autumn Equinox/Mabon), the fertility (of Samhain/Deep Autumn), the peaking of it (at Winter Solstice). The meridian points of the two quarters of the waxing light phase then are celebrations of the Young One/Virgin or the Cosmogenetic quality of differentiation, the new continually emerging, the Urge to Be; and they are Imbolc/Early Spring and Beltaine/High Spring. At Imbolc, the first in the light phase, we may identify with She who is shining and new – as we take her form; at Beltaine, we may consciously participate in Her process of the dance of life. The whole light part of the cycle is about coming into being: nurturing it (the midwifing of Imbolc/Early Spring), stepping into the power of it (the certain return of Spring Equinox/Eostar), the fertility (of Beltaine/High Spring), the peaking of it (at Summer Solstice). In the PaGaian wheel of ceremony there are two particular celebrations of the Mother, the Cosmogenetic quality of communion; and they are the Solstices. If one imagines the light part of the cycle as a celebration of the ‘Productions of Time’, and the dark part of the cycle as a celebration of ‘Eternity’, the Solstices then are meeting points, points of interchange, and are celebrations of the communion/relational field of Eternity with the Productions of Time. This is a relationship which does happen in this Place, in this Web. This Place of Being, this Web, is a Communion – it is the Mother; the Solstices mark Her birthings, Her gateways. The Equinoxes then – both Spring and Autumn – are two celebrations wherein the balance of all three Faces/Creative qualities is particularly present: in the PaGaian wheel, the Equinoxes have been special celebrations of Demeter and Persephone – echoing the ancient tradition of Mother-Daughter Mysteries that celebrate the awesomeness of the continuity of life, its creative tension/balance. Both Equinoxes then are celebrations and contemplations of empowerment through deep Wisdom – one contemplation during the dark phase and one during the light phase. The Autumn Equinox is a descent to Wisdom, the Spring Equinox is an emergence with Wisdom gained. I like to think of the Equinoxes, and of the ancient icons of Demeter and Persephone, as celebrations of the delicate ‘curvature of space-time’, the fertile balance of tensions which enables it all. Her Creative Place The Mother aspect then may be understood to be particularly present at four of the Seasonal Moments, which are also regarded traditionally as the Solar festivals; and in this cosmology Sun is felt as Mother. I recognize these four as points of interchange: at Autumn Equinox, Mother is present primarily as Giver – She is letting Persephone go, at Spring Equinox, She is present primarily as Receiver – welcoming the Daughter back, at Winter Solstice the Mother gives birth, creates form, at Summer Solstice, She opens again full of radiance, and disperses form. The Mother is Agent/Actor at the Solstices. She is Participant/Witness at the Equinoxes, where it is then really Persephone who is Agent/Actor, embodying an inseparable Young One and Old One. The Old One is often named as Hecate, who completes the Trio – all seamlessly within each other. Another possible way to visual it, or to tell the story, is this: The Mother – Demeter – is always there, at the Centre if you like. Persephone cycles around. She is the Daughter who returns in the Spring as flower, who will become fruit/grain of the Summer, who at Lammas assents to the dissolution – the consumption. At Autumn Equinox She returns to the underworld as seed – Her harvest is rejoiced in, Her loss is grieved, as She becomes Sovereign of the Underworld – Her face changes to the Dark One, Crone (Hecate). As the wheel turns into the light part of the cycle She becomes Young One/Virgin again. Persephone (as Seed) is that part of Demeter that can be all three aspects – can move through the complete cycle. The Mother and Daughter are really One, and embody the immortal process of creation and destruction. Demeter hands Persephone the wheat, the Mystery, and the thread of life is unbroken – it goes on forever. It is immortal, it is eternal. Even though it is true that all will be lost, and all is lost – Being always arises again: within this field of time there is never-ending renewal, eternity. This is what is revealed in the ubiquitous three faces of the Creative Dynamic/ She of Old, the Triplicity that runs through the Cosmos. The Seed of Life never …

Part IV Asking the Dangerous Question: How Old is the Symbol of Nine Nipples? An inquiry about the origin of an ancient female symbolism is subversive in nature. It shakes the ground of patriarchal premises come to be believed rather than understood. The question here is the provenance of the nine nipples sculpted on ancient Korean bells. A focus on the female principle that nine nipples represent hurls the inquirer into uncharted territory. Note that official [read Sinocentric] historiography of East Asia leaves no means to navigate through the beginning of gynocentric civilizations. Where there is no written history, archaeologies and mythologies are rendered anomalous if not obsolete. Thus, tracking the provenance of nine nipples is made to face a quandary, without the mytho-history of Old Magoism. The relief of nine nipples on the ancient Korean bell has its predecessors. From Silla, a wind chime called pungtak from Gameun-sa (Temple of Gameun) appears to be an immediate model. Much smaller in size (27.8 cm), pungtak is to be hung on the eaves of a pagoda or a Buddhist temple building. Given that the Gameun-sa was completed in 682 CE, the nine nipples of pungtak may well be considered as the precursor of the Sangwon-sa bell (cast 725 CE). Unfortunately, however, we are unequipped to trace the pre-Silla Korean examples of nine nipples under the standard view of Sinocentric ancient Korean history. This will need another space to discuss. That said, how old is the symbol of nine nipples? Extant ancient bronze bells with nine nipples suggest that it dates back to as early as the introduction of bronze metallurgy in East Asia. On the other hand, however, the existence of nine nipples on ancient pottery bells throws a new light on another scenario that they may predate the Bronze Age. That the use of clay preceded the use of metal is incontestable. Interestingly, a good number of ancient bronze bells with nine nipples are from the Shang dynasty (ca. 1600 BCE-ca. 1046 BCE) and the Western Zhou dynasty (1046 BCE-771 BCE) of China. Seong Nakju, in his article tracing the origin of ancient Korean bells, states that bells with the nine protruded knobs emerged for the first time between the late Shang and the early Zhou period (see Seong Nakju below in Sources). When something of the female principle, ultimately like the provenance of Mago, is dated to the Shang dynasty [Shang dynasty to be the earliest historical polity of China], it suggests that it was there before the beginning of Chinese history. On these ancient Chinese bells, the nine knobs are placed in three rows of three in its four corners just like yudu (nipples) of the Korean bell. Nonetheless, there is, among others, a distinction to be mentioned here. The nine knobs of Zhou bells are called “mae” (枚, classifier for small things, mei in Chinese) not “yudu.” The female connotation is absent in ancient Chinese bells. This gender shift or female castration to be precise, however casual it may seem, is no small factor. It has allowed a chasm in the forthcoming history of Chinese bells. Bells were no mere object for the ancients. They were the channel of epiphany, sacred in short. They represented the divine power derived from Old Magoism during which female shamans ruled. The patriarchal enthronement that took seizure in the course of history, however, marked a discontinuity and changed the nature of the bell’s symbolism to be only nominal, lacking reality. The bell as the symbol of the female principle was no longer effective under patriarchal rules. Why? It was deprived of the reality of the Goddess with which it could reverberate. Thus, it lost its ultimate purpose, to create music, in that the patriarchal ruling principle itself was not “musical,” but dissonant with the rest of the world. One who breaks the harmony can’t own the music! Bells are rendered as a thing that points to the meaning of the past. This is how bells during the era of patriarchal rules came to be objectified as a royal belonging, as seen in the Qing bell of a later time. Ancient sages or even kings and queens of East Asia may have noticed what had gone wrong with the bell and agonized to restore it, the effort for which they were praised as the great thinker or sage ruler. The imposing air of authority had to be made visual precisely because the bell could no longer do the magic, engendering the divine power. Thus, highly embellished designs and classifications of various bells were made to cover up the void. Later on, the magnitude of the bell was employed to convey (pseudo-)power, deranged from the female principle. Nonetheless, the nine nipples seemingly survived in many bells of the Zhou dynasty. I present here some specific bells such as yongzhong (a bell with a cylindrical handle on top), niuzhong (a bell with a semi-circular knob on top), and yangjiaozhong (a bell shaped like ram’s horns) to highlight the various styles of mae. After all, pyeonjong (bianzhong in Chinese, metal chime bells) is a variation of pyeongyeong (bianqing in Chinese), the stone chime bells (see Part I). This suggests that the making of ancient bells needs to be seen in a continuum rather than as a new invention in the Bronze era. However, we do not have pyeongyeongs with nine nipples. Stone chimes do not seem to have nine nipples. If ancient East Asians had not carved the nine nipples on a stone bell, then they did it on clay. Pottery bells with nine nipples are found to have co-existed with bronze bells. The level of sophistication and precision in artistry is there as well, as shown in the images. It may be, as experts would explain, that ceramic bells were created to substitute for the costly bronze bells during the Zhou dynasty. However, that should not be always the case. Prior to the Bronze Age, humans invented terracotta technology and brought it to its zenith from which, in fact, metallurgical techniques are likely to have derived. (2014 Mago Pilgrimage Report 1) Sweat Lodge in Gyodong, Ganghwa Islands by Helen Hwang

The first of them that I would like to mention concerned the sweat lodge called Hanjeung-mak (汗蒸幕, Chamber of chill and steam).[1] Until we visited the traditional sweat lodge in Gyodong, Ganghwa Island, it did not occur to me that the origin of its modern variations[2] has to do with the rebirthing experience in the Womb of Mago.
