I know of a very good psychiatrist in Iowa City who might be able to help you.” Said Polly to my husband of 12 years, when he came to her house to rant and rave about me. By this time, and it was the first time I had ever confided in anyone, I had told her a bit about my very troubled marriage.

Dance Dramas as an Instrument of Political Change by Dorothea Kahena Viale, Ph.D.

There are many ways to create change in society. I was considered a good girl; parents liked when my friends and I played together. I was always creating games for us to play, and we never caused trouble. However, I started rebelling against the existent order of things from a young age. I grew up in Bed-Sty Brooklyn. My friends and I were all connected to a hyphenated American culture. I was Sicilian/American, others were Maltese/American, South America/American, Puerta Rican/American and so on. When I asked my mother where the white people were, she told me they had money lived in Manhattan. Later, I realized that she meant Northern Italians, British, etc. When we met someone new, it was common to ask their heritage. No big deal. So, it came as a shock when I introduced somebody new to the group and there was resistance. I had watched this girl looking out her window every day and she looked sad. I would cross the street and talk to her. We exchanged stories. I asked her to come play with us. She said her mom wouldn’t let come out. She had to watch her little brother. Well, my humble self, told her, don’t worry I will talk to your mother and convince her to let you play with us. And I did. She was black; African-American. When she joined us, I was in for a shock. My friends would not play with her. Why this one hyphen bothered them, with all the mixtures we had, was beyond me. So, I played with my new friend, and let my other friends fend for themselves. I realized that, while I had other black friends before, I had played where they lived, not on my block. After a very short while, my friends got over themselves and joined us. What helped was that I was the one that usually made-up new things to do, when they got bored. For example, I created a skating army. My mom worked in a sweat shop as a seamstress. Pay was low but one of the few benefits was that she could take home scraps of material that were too small to make clothes with. She made all of us these cute hats which we wore while skating. We were quite proud of our selves. I created routines (which I much, much later realized were choreographies). Having the hats made us feel connected. The next run ins were with the Church (Catholic, of course). The earliest that I remembered occurred when I was about 7 years old. I told a priest from the parish that I wanted to be an altar boy. He said that couldn’t happen, but that I could be an altar girl. I asked him what altar girls did. He replied that they cleaned the altar linens. I responded angrily, that if I wanted to do housework, I would help my mother at home. I demanded that he give me the address of our local bishop. I was sure the priest was just against women and couldn’t believe that it was a rule of the Church. But, of course, it was. Many decades later, I went to Italy as a part of a Women’s Studies in Religion course. Gianluigi Gugliametto, a fellow student, set up a fabulous tour in Italy which included a church where nuns ran the services. The one exception was that a priest consecrated the host which the nuns distributed to the congregation. A step forward. One last Catholic Church run in… When it came time for Confirmation, we had to choose a name for Confirmation. I chose Athena. The nun told me that it had to a saint’s name. I replied confidently that it was a Goddess name and wasn’t that better!? Umm…. None of them agreed. I was bummed. I ended up using the most common name Mary because I lost interest. As I grew and learned, the manner of things I felt needed change expanded. I have marched, voted, attended rallies and I have signed petitions. I was squished against a chain link fence while police dogs threatened to maul us (during the Nixon administration). I was a founding member of the Black Student Union. It was by request. When they asked, I looked at them, pointed at my skin, and looked at them questioning. They said we know, but, ummmmm, we need to have a white person to get the Union OK’d. OH! So, you need me to be your token? They replied yeah…Sorry but we trust you. Do I have to go to many meetings? No, you don’t have to go to any, unless you want to. I said you have a deal. But the action that has made the most impact, are the thirty something dance dramas I have created. All were created and performed at the Long Beach WomanSpirit Summer and Winter Solstice Faires. Some were performed also at MECDA (Middle Eastern Culture and Dance) events. The arts are profound way to create change because they engage people in a way that is not dry and draw them into the story. With the dance dramas, our stories were danced, had dialogue, and always had an interactive part to include the audience. I usually added a give-away to help them continue the energy after the fair. This including of the audience gave them ownership to continue action the taken when they got home. What was nice is that at our regular meetings, they would let me know how things went. The first or second one I created, I danced alone. It was for LBWS. A member of our community, who was overwhelmed attempted suicide. He, also, caused other problems. But, underneath, he was a good person. He had ended up in jail with no one to bail him out. He was very depressed. I created a dance drama, where I was dressed in black, the sky cooperated by being overcast. I don’t remember the words …

This huipil was created to honor Chicomecoatl and all corn goddesses and deities associated with the origin, planting, growing and harvesting of one of the oldest crops known on this continent. It has been grown in Mexico for over 5,000 years, predominantly in the lands of the Maya, Azteca, and other native peoples. For the survival of humanity, this natural food source must remain free from genetic manipulation and unsustainable farming practices. The ancestors are speaking, Corn Mother is calling. Finding Brighid by Jude Lally

I have always been drawn to the mystery of Brighid, fascinated by all the threads that weave together to form this great triple Goddess made up from Brighid and her two sisters. I honor that mystery that is Brighid, who Mary Condren explains stands for a European Wisdom tradition rather than a specific deity. Brighid’s energies have always been ones that lie at the heart of transformation, experienced in the act of making when I would lose myself in creating something – that feeling of time flying of entering a place that felt on a threshold – which Csikszentmihalyi called the flow state. Brighid is also that place where you might find yourself at the edge of anger or frustration and the transformation she has always offered is to breathe deeply and change the situation – as we always have the power over our emotions. A Brighid Hagstone – honoring her mystery This transformation, in its many forms, is my Brighid. Of all her stories and legends, it is the tradition of her Fire temple in Kildare which holds the most intrigue and magic for me. The woman who tended her ever-burning flame and imagining to sit with those women through the night as they tended the flame and her great mystery. Brigit is not an object of worship but a metaphor through which we can engage imaginatively and creatively with a female tradition of ethics and divinity’ – Mary Condren Many years ago I attended a Celtic Spirituality event and in one of the afternoon sessions one of the workshops centered around a guided meditation. We were invited to go to a place and I chose a beach, with wide white quartz sands on a horseshoe bay. We were them prompted to picture a figure walking down the beach, who eventually made their way down the beach to meet us. This figure was Brighid – and as I looked into her blue eyes as she embraced me and I was flooded with the feelings I had encountered through creativity – the inquisitiveness, being lost in the making process, transcending the everyday reality, feelings of the accomplishment, satisfaction and doing something deeply meaningful which provides a sense of self-worth. As she stood back I looked again into her eyes and was very surprised to see my own face staring back – those blue/grey eyes were in fact mine. All those wonderful feeling left me and I immediately wanted them back yet I knew she had given me a taste of what I would find in this life – a role which would be rooted in these emotions. All this was long before I had ever found doll making and yet throughout my life I have always had a sense of actively looking for that ‘thing’ that would become my focus and work. Balnahard Bay, Isle of Colonsay When exploring the Isle of Colonsay in 2019 – I had started off on a journey to the north of the island to try and find a stone cross which was part of St Catherines Monastery, my mind full of questions to what monastic life was like and the relationship the nuns had to this place. As it turned out I had somehow walked past the cross and the few stones that marked out the foundations stones of the monastery as I found myself walking through wild flower strewn machair to experience on of the most amazing sight that was Balnahard Bay. I spent a good few glorious hours sitting on the beach soaking up this wonderful place and exploring in rock pools. Before leaving I sat in a little bay to the west of the shore, sitting and observing the birds, listening to the calls of a young Oystercatcher call on its parents and at that moment cooried (a Scots word meaning tucked in, sheltered) in at the rock I looked out at the crescent moon bay and felt fully embraced by Brighid’s mantle and it’s only now, in reflection, that I realize this was the horseshoe beach from the guided meditation. There was a deep feeling of coming home, home to myself and all those feelings and emotions I had felt in her embrace. And on that little beach, cooried in against the rock with sand in my toes I felt the mantle of this Goddess of the Isles, (the Hebrides are said to be ‘the Isles of Bride’) wrapped tightly around me. Hina inspires us to direct loving kindness toward ourselves, so, filled, we can give to others. Hina is the greatest Polynesian goddess. She is the Virgin Mother, Creatress of the World, and the First Womon. She gave birth to every god and the first humans. One of her myths describes her as the warrior leader of the Island of Womyn. Men were forbidden on its shores and only trees impregnated its inhabitants. Hina is magnificent and ageless. Whenever she begins to age, she swims in the sea with the whales and is rejuvenated. Hina beacons us to return the energy we give to others to ourselves. There is a time to focus outward, and a time to rest. Too often, we neglect our own care in order to provide for others. When this goes on for too long life slips out of balance. Without taking time to refill our own well we are unable to meet anyone else’s needs. (S/HE V3 N1 Book Review) Max Dashu, Women in Greek Mythology: Pythias, Melissae, and Titanides, Reviewed by Lisa R. Skura

[This is from S/HE: An International Journal of Goddess Studies (V3 N1, 2023) Its Ebook edition and paperback are available at Mago Bookstore.] When I heard about the opportunity to review a new book by Max Dashu, the creator of the online Suppressed Histories Archives, I jumped and danced widdershins with excitement! Dashu is not only a font of information—with her Suppressed Women’s History online, her online classes, her lectures at various women’s events, as well as her books—but also an encyclopedic touchstone to reclaim women’s herstory and empowerment. Dashu communicates that her purpose in writing this book is to expose the truth of our past: The Hellenic cultural record illustrates how dominant narratives not only reflect but encode and enact social relations, behavior, attitudes. They are enforced by magnetizing them into the spoken, written, visual fabric of life, through legend, rite, and custom. The myths of gods who rape, and men who carry off maidens, shape men’s values and actions as well as the expectations and fears of women. Through repetition in language, story and rite, a worldview is activated and maintained, one that defines the chattel status of women, and demands female obedience, submission, sacrifice, and suicide. (xii) Dashu points out that the most ancient and powerful divinities were female and that many were associated with the needs of life such as fresh, clean water sources. Dashu does not mince words in the preface and goes right for the source of distortions and propaganda created by the misogynist “Classical” systems that have subjugated women and others for millennia. This book is brilliant and contains the information academia ignores. In Chapter 2, Dashu discusses Marija Gimbutas’s Kurgan theory, which was ridiculed and vilified by various—mostly male—scholars but is now being confirmed by work in linguistics and DNA studies (63). Jealous male competitors tried to cut out Gimbutas’s tongue, like in the Greek myth of Philomel, but the physical evidence for her theory is now undeniable. Gimbutas committed the sin of demonstrating the importance of worshipping goddesses as not just handmaidens and sacred consorts for men but as female deities who empowered women’s fertility and the fertility of the Earth. A particular male scholar who vehemently tried to discredit her quietly apologized and scuttled away, his tail between his legs, but he had already defamed her and her work. Female scholarship is always in danger of suppression, and that is why it is important to have to have scholars such as Dashu expose the androcentric viewpoint of history and Epic poetry, which are inherently male biased and promote rapist ideologies and warfare as male glory and fame. Although to some it might seem as though I am beating the Indo-European horse to death by emphasizing the importance of female scholars, but many people to this day still believe that women contributed nothing to civilization, are unimportant, easily replaceable, and even that they have no souls. Such revisionist histories, propaganda, and male bias place the female as “Other” and outside male civilization, when in fact female ingenuity and inventions have always been at the center of the creation of civilization. Dashu describes how women have been denied access to education and opportunities: Athena is thought to be a goddess of civilization, the arts, the sciences, and crafts—especially weaving as well as wisdom. It is ironic that a goddess represents many of the things denied to women throughout much of history, such as the same education as men, and that women are then accused of not contributing anything to Western civilization. (14) Even indisputable facts and reality are flagrantly tossed away or suppressed by male scholars’ biases and religious viewpoints and replaced with a miasma of male assumptions and misinformation. Even the rapes of women as a literary tool are euphemized, and Dashu points out how such practices are downplayed in epic poetry: The poets refrain from describing the rapes. They all happen offstage —which is the origin of the word “obscene,” something too shocking to be performed onstage. These stories loom large in ancient Greek culture, already glorified from the historical distance of half a millennium, and they are saturated with an intensely patriarchal sexual politics. (75) I believe that this is how rape has been normalized in patriarchal culture and why rape kits sit untested in police evidence rooms and how the very worst abusers of women can still hold the highest offices in the land. As a weaver and spinner and mythologist, I love Dashu’s use of the textile metaphors. Like other scholars have, Dashu makes the connection between textile work and women’s suppressed voices. Woman’s textile work became demonized in patriarchy as fate goddesses became associated with weaving and spinning male destiny, something that needs to be defeated rather than being associated with wisdom and creating life. In chapter 2 Dashu discusses the idea of story cloths and female communication, but the interpretation that stood out different was in the myth of Arachne and Athena on page 110. While most accounts of this myth describe Athena’s weaving as depicting the gods defeating the hubris of humans and Arachne’s weaving as depicting the hubris of the gods, Dashu calls out the euphemizing of male violence against women for what it really is and suggests that Arachne is showing her contempt for all the serial rapist gods. Athena is the patriarchal daughter; Zeus, her father swallowed her mother, Metis, who represented wisdom, and Zeus gave birth to Athena from his forehead using an axe. Therefore, Athena will always be on the side of men over women, just as some female supreme court justices in the United States will be. In Chapter 3, “Goddesses Revised,”Dashu engages what many other female scholars propose about Hellenic goddesses, that they are far more ancient than the patriarchal characterizations of them, and how epic male poets reenvisioned those goddesses, reducing their stature in patriarchy, yet were unable to eliminate them. (Prose) Animal Altruism by Susan Hawthorne

Young cassowaries, they are several months old, June 2019. During the recent bushfire period which went from September to mid-February, animals in Australia were killed in the millions. The latest figure stands at a billion. Among them were many iconic Australian animals including kangaroos, koalas and wombats. But it also included a huge number of birds, many of whom washed up on the beaches along the south coast of NSW. The animals who survived are still being cared for in wildlife shelters and by vets. My favourite stories were of the wombats. Wombats dig deep holes and because wombats are rotund and quite large, these burrows have to be pretty big. They are also well protected from fire because they are quite deep and long, in some cases a hundred metres in length. Wombats share their burrows with other wombats, and during a fire, other animals also take shelter. In one instance I saw that a snake had taken refuge in a wombat hole. Children’s author Jackie French, noticed that the wombats began preparing for the fire in November. The fire that came to her place, did so in January. And while some scientists have pooh poohed the idea of wombats sharing their territories, when you live with wild animals constantly, you see things that get missed by scientists who come for just a short period with their sensors and cameras. Another woman woke one morning to find 50 kangaroos in her garage. She had been rescuing joeys and young kangaroos for many years and recognised some of them. They knew that her place was one of safety. The taller cassowary at the back is the female, December 2019. We watch cassowaries where we live and over the years have seen many things that are denied in the official story. It is the case that male cassowaries mostly take the stripeys (the young chicks) around for several months. The story we heard was that the females never do this. Last year both female and male looked after three chicks for about five months. With our increasing disconnection from nature, people have ceased to understand how the world works and how important it is to see altruism displayed by wild animals and how they operate in times of need. Not too long ago I had dream about cassowaries in which I was worried that one would go for me. You can see from the photo that they are rather large. At the end of the dream: Three very large cassowaries come through the door. I manage to walk between them to open the door, as I do the largest one yet walks past me and as she does she says, ‘Are you all right?’ At this point I realise that I will be okay with them no matter how many of them there are. (Art Essay) Season’s Greetings for the Childless by Sanna Pöyhönen

Samhain for Celts, Kekri for Finns, El Dia de Muertos for Mexicans, All Saints Day for Christians… Names of the celebration change but they all refer to this time of year when the veil between us and the dead is thin. Of all the past relatives, my thoughts are oddly with my great aunt Eva, who died before I was born. She lived next to my grandmother’s household, and never had children herself nor got married. When I was a child, I felt sorry for her life without own family, but after I’ve had a childless life myself, I’ve understood that perhaps she was happy. She loved animals, had a job outside of home, and invested her single woman’s salary in beautiful design furniture. None of this was a typical thing to do in the Finnish countryside at that time. I have one of her chairs now, and when sitting in it I think of her. She isn’t, as well as I won’t, be a biological foremother for anyone, but nevertheless our memory may stay here after us. I didn’t choose the childless life myself. In my 30’s, I was desperately trying to get pregnant, and when that didn’t happen I felt myself a complete failure as a woman. However, I let the pain pass, and instead decided to cherish the freedom that a life alone can bring. Today only a distant echo of grief and occasional what-if-thoughts of a daughter remind me of childlessness. I was pregnant once. The baby wasn’t born, but she made me and my husband establish a home together, and I got two beautiful stepsons. I’m grateful for that, and I light a candle for her too. Aunt Eva who I never met, and dear someone who didn’t even exist: I wish you both peace there on the other side – and also for myself and all of us on this. The painting is inspired by De Kinderboom, a myth from 14th century Amsterdam. According to the story, in Volewijck, next to the gallows field, there grew a silvery tree where children’ s souls lived. (Special Post 1) Multi-linguistic Resemblances of “Mago” by Mago Circle Members

“Ma” in “Mago” and “Ma-Gaia” Mother Goddess, ca.7250-6700 BCE, Catal Huyuk Turkey [Conversation between Carol P. Christ, Ph.D. and Helen Hye-Sook Hwang, Ph.D.] Carol P. Christ (CPC): Below is culled from “Gaia” in Wikipedia: The Greek word γαῖα (transliterated as gaia) is a collateral form of γῆ (gē, Doric γᾶ ga and probably δᾶ da) meaning Earth, a word of uncertain origin. R. S. P. Beekes has suggested a Pre-Greek origin. In Mycenean Greek Ma-ka (trans. as Ma-ga, “Mother Gaia”) also contains the root ga-. Helen Hye-Sook Hwang (HHH): “Mago” and “Goma” are closely linked. Gom or Goma means the bear and Magoist shaman queen of the late fourth millennium BCE. She is also related with the Big Bear constellation. “Go” is used as a modifier referring to Mago or the Goddess in various texts of East Asia. “Mago” is related with “magi,” whose singular form is “magus” or “magos.” Will have to check for more details and the source. This strong association of that sound with “mother” has persisted in nearly every language on earth, countering the natural localization of language. Familiar or colloquial terms for mother in English are: Aama, Mata used in Nepal Mom and mommy are used in the United States, Canada, South Africa, Philippines, India and parts of the West Midlands including Birmingham in the United Kingdom. (Special Post 1) Nine-Headed Dragon Slain by Patriarchal Heroes: A Cross-cultural Discussion by Mago Circle Members

[Editor’s Note: This and the ensuing eight sequels (all nine parts) are a revised version of the discussion that has taken place in The Mago Circle, Facebook group, since September 24, 2017 to the present. Themes are introduced and interwoven in a somewhat random manner, as different discussants lead the discussion. The topic of the number nine is key to Magoism, primarily manifested as Nine Magos or the Nine Mago Creatrix. Mago Academy hosts a virtual and actual event, Nine Day Mago Celebration, annually.] Helen Hwang: I am thinking of the Nine Goddess/Mago Symbolism or Nine Numerology. Insights connect the data that I have collected, otherwise seemingly unrelated across cultures and periods. We have reasons to celebrate the nine symbolism among us. As seen in this discussion below, Hercules is most aptly equated with Huangdi (Yellow Emperor, 2698–2598 BCE), one of the forebear emperors of ancient China, who is alleged to have defeated Chiu (successor of Goma), the representative of Danguk’s Nine Giants (nine sub-states). The Magoist history writes the other way around. Chiu won the war, the archetypal international/global war waged over the defense/overthrow of the Magoist throne. Old Magoists (Danguk founded by Goma) of Nine Queen-led States defended the rebellion of the patrilocal force, represented by the Huangdi. With this victory, Old Magoist Confederacy of nine sub-states was able to maintain gynocentric peace of the ancient world for about five centuries longer until a man, Yao, rose to give a way for the establishment of the first patriarchal rule, ancient China of the Xia Dynasty (c. 2070 BCE – c. 1600 BCE). Nonetheless, patriarchal ethnocentric Sinocentric historiography has proliferated to this day. Yu, the founder of the Xia dynasty, is depicted as the hero who slains the nine-headed snake. What I am saying is here that the Nine Goddess/Symbolism is pre-patriarchal in origin and possibly speaks of the same event across cultures! The slain of nine-headed snakes or dragons indicates the usurpation of gynocentric rule by a patriarchal hero across cultures. As of today, our contributors have grown to more than 130 in number and our readership is from about 140 countries around the world. We have some hundred email followers as well as Wordpress blog followers. We draw 3000-4000 clicks per month on average; that is no small accomplishment for a Goddess blog that is named after a yet-to-be heard word, Mago (the Great Goddess), and that began from scratch.

Mago Almanac: 13 Month 28 Day Calendar (Book A) Free PDF available at Mago Bookstore. MAPPING THE MAGOIST CALENDAR According to the Budoji, the Magoist Calendar was fully implemented and advocated during the period of Old Joseon (ca. 2333 BCE-ca. 232 BCE) whose civilization is known as Budo (Emblem City). Indeed, the Magoist Calendar is referred to as the Budo Calendar in the Budoji. Budo was founded to succeed Sinsi and reignited Sinsi’s innovations including the numerological and musicological thealogy of the Nine Mago Creatrix. The Budoji expounds on the Magoist Calendar as follows: The Way of Heaven circles to generate Jongsi (a cyclic period, an ending and a beginning). Jongsi circles to generate another Jongsi of four Jongsi. One cycle of jongsi is called Soryeok (Little Calendar). Jongsi of Jongsi is called Jungryeok (Medium Calendar). Jongsi of four Jongsis is called Daeryeok (Large Calendar). A cycle of Little Calendar is called Sa (year). One Sa has thirteen Gi (months). One Gi has twenty-eight Il (days). Twenty-eight Il are divided by four Yo (weeks). One Yo has seven Il. A cycle of one Yo is called Bok (completion of a week). One Sa (year) has fifty-two Yobok. That makes 364 Il. This is of Seongsu (Natural Number) 1, 4, 7. Each Sa includes a Dan of the big Sa. A Dan is equal to one day. That adds up to 365 days. At the half point after the third Sa, there is a Pan of the big Sak (the year of the great dark moon). A pan comes at a half point of Sa. This is of Beopsu (Lawful Number) 2, 5, 8. A Pan is equal to a day. Therefore, the fourth Sa has 366 days. At the half point after the tenth Sa, there is a Gu of the big Hoe (Eve of the first day of the month). Gu is the root of time. Three hundred Gu makes one Myo. With Myo, we can sense Gu. A lapse of 9,633 Myo-Gak-Bun-Si makes one day. This is of Chesu (Physical Number), 3, 6, 9. As the Way of Heaven circles, we are able to perceive Our Universe in finite measures of time/space. Time becomes measurable, as space is stabilized. Seasons and days-nights are demarcated in cyclic patterns, as the Earth makes the three cyclic movements of rotation, revolution, and precession. Calendar, born out of the inter-cosmic time, synchronizes human culture with the song/dance of the universe. The term Jongsi, which means an ending and a beginning, is equivalent to “a cyclic period” that is marked by the beginning and the end. Time (a day, a month, and a year) circles, as space (the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun) spirals. The Magoist Calendar has three sub-calendars: The period of one yearly cycle is called Little Calendar, whereas the period of two yearly cycles is called Medium Calendar and the period of four yearly cycles, Large Calendar. I have made short spaces in the video where it could be paused. For more full participation in the ceremony, you could have some past photos of yourself, an altar with ancestor photos, a gingerbread snake, some apples sliced up, and some apple juice. The script for this Samhain ceremony is offered in Chapter 4 of my book A Poiesis of the Creative Cosmos: Celebrating Her within PaGaian Sacred Ceremony, with all acknowledgements and references there. However I want to acknowledge here the inspiration and some text of Robin Morgan’s poem “The Network of the Imaginary Mother” in her book Lady of the Beasts, for which I was given permission in my book. I also acknowledge here the paraphrase of some words by Starhawk in her book The Spiral Dance, used in the rite of Sailing to a New World. I also use a line from the poem Song of Hecate by Bridget McKern. The elements of Water, Fire, Earth and Air on the altar in this video are placed in directions that are appropriate to my region in the Southern Hemisphere, and East Coast Australia: you may place yours differently, and transliterate when I mention the direction (which I do minimally). For the rite of the Transformation Journey (remembering old selves) I use an adaptation of a children’s game “In and Out the Windows”, where each participant travels in and out of upraised and linked arms of the circle, and when ‘in’ may speak and /or show photos of themselves from the past. Some may choose to remember any self from the entire evolutionary story, with whom they would like to identify. The game seems appropriate to what each being does existentially in so many ways, over the eons as well as in our personal lives. The chant can be found on YouTube. In the season leaves should love, since it gives them leave to move through the wind, towards the ground they were watching while they hung, legend says there is a seam stitching darkness like a name. Now when dying grasses veil earth from the sky in one last pale wave, as autumn dies to bring winter back, and then the spring, we who die ourselves can peel back another kind of veil that hangs among us like thick smoke. Tonight at last I feel it shake. I feel the nights stretching away thousands long behind the days, till they reach the darkness where all of me is ancestor. I turn my hand and feel a touch move with me, and when I brush my young mind across another, I have met my mother’s mother. Sure as footsteps in my waiting self, I find her, and she brings arms that hold answers for me, intimate, waiting, bounty: “Carry me.” She leaves this trail through a shudder of the veil, and leaves, like amber where she stays, a gift for her perpetual gaze. Lammas – the Sacred Consuming by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

Lammas, the first seasonal transition after Summer Solstice, may be summarised as the Season that marks and celebrates the Sacred Consuming, the Harvest of Life. Many indigenous cultures recognised the grain itself as Mother … Corn Mother being one of those images – She who feeds the community, the world, with Her own body: the Corn, the grain, the food, the bread, is Her body. She the Corn Mother, or any other grain Mother, was/is the original sacrifice … no need for extraordinary heroics: it is the nature of Her being. She is sacrificed, consumed, to make the people whole with Her body (as the word “sacrifice” means “to make whole”). She gives Herself in Her fullness to feed the people …. the original Communion. In cultures that preceded agriculture or were perhaps pastoral – hunted or bred animals for food – this cross-quarter day may not have been celebrated, or perhaps it may have been marked in some other way. Yet even in our times when many are not in relationship with the harvest of food directly, we may still be in relationship with our place: Sun and Earth and Moon still do their dance wherever you are, and are indeed the Ground of one’s being here … a good reason to pay attention and homage, and maybe as a result, and in the process, get the essence of one’s life in order. One does not need to go anywhere to make this pilgrimage … simply Place one’s self. The seasonal transition of Lammas may offer that in particular, being a “moment of grace” – as Thomas Berry has named the seasonal transitions, when the dark part of the day begins to grow longer, as the cloak of darkness slowly envelopes the days again: it is timely to reflect on the Dark Cosmos in Whom we are, from Whom we arise and to Whom we return – and upon that moment when like Corn Mother we give ourselves over. This reflection is good, will serve a person and all – to live fully, as well as simply to be who we are: this dark realm of manifesting is the core of who we are. And what difference might such reflection make to our world – personal and collective – to live in this relationship with where we are, and thus who we are. We all are the grain that is harvested and all are Her harvest … perhaps one may use a different metaphor: the truth that may be reflected upon at this seasonal moment after the peaking of Sun’s light at Summer Solstice and the wind down into Autumn, is that everything passes, all fades away … even our Sun shall pass. All is consumed. So What are we part of? (I write it with a capital because surely it is a sacred entity) And how might we participate creatively? We are Food – whether we like it or not … Lammas is a good time to get with the Creative plot, though many find it the most difficult, or focus on more exoteric celebration. May we be interesting food[i]. We are holy Communion, like Corn Mother. (Essay) Conceiving, Imagining the New at Samhain by Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

It is the Season of Samhain/Deep Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere at this time. In the PaGaian version of Samhain/Deep Autumn ceremony participants journey to the “Luminous World Egg” … a term taken from Starhawk in her book The Spiral Dance[i], where she also names that place as the “Shining Isle”, which is of course, the Seed of conception, a metaphor for the origins of all and/or the female egg: it is the place for rebirth. Artist: Bundeluk, Blue Mountains, Australia. The “luminous world egg” is a numinous place within, the MotherStar of conception: that is, a place of unfolding/becoming. The journey to this numinous place within requires first a journey back, through some of each one’s transformations, however each may wish to name those transformations at this time. The transformations for each and every being are infinite in their number, for there is “nothing we have not been” as has been told by Celts and others of Old, and also by Western science in the evolutionary story (a story told so well by evolutionary biologist Elisabet Sahtouris, particularly in her video Journey of a Silica Atom.) Ceremonial participants may choose selves from biological, present historical self, or may choose selves from the mythic with whom they feel connection; from any lineage – biological or otherwise. Selves may also be chosen from Gaia’s evolutionary story – earlier creatures, winged or scaled ones … with whom one wishes to identify at this time. Each participant is praised for their “becoming” for each self they share. When all have completed these journeys/stories of transformation, the circle is lauded dramatically by the celebrant for their courage to transform; and she likens them all to Gaia Herself who has made such transitions for eons. The celebrant awards each with a gingerbread snake, “Gaian totems of life renewed”[ii]. gingerbread snakes Participants sit and consume these gingerbread snakes in three parts: (i) as all the “old shapes” of self that were named; and (ii) remembering the ancestors, those whose lives have been harvested, whose lives have fed our own, remembering that we too are the ancestors, that we will be consumed; and (iii) remembering and consuming the stories of our world that they desire to change, the stories that fire their wrath or sympathy: in the consuming, absorbing them (as we do), each may transform them by thoughts and actions – “in our own bodyminds”. When all that is consumed “wasting no part”, it is said that “we are then free to radiate whatever we conceive”, to “exclaim the strongest natural fibre known” – our creative selves, “into such art, such architecture, as can house a world made sacred” by our building[iii]. This “natural fibre” is a reference to the spider’s thread from within her own body, with which she weaves her web, her home; and Spider has frequently been felt in indigenous cultures around the globe as Weaver and Creator of the Cosmos. Spider the Creatrix, North America, C. 1300 C.E., Hallie Iglehart Austen, The Heart of the Goddess, p.13 In the ceremony, participants linked with a thread that they weave around the circle, may sail together for a new world “across the vast sunless sea between endings and beginnings, across the Womb of magic and transformation, to the “Not-Yet” who beckons”[iv]: to the Luminous World Egg whereupon the new may be conceived and dreamed up. Samhain/Deep Autumn ceremony is an excellent place for co-creating ourselves, for imaginingthe More that we may become, and wish to become. This is where creation and co-creation happens … in the Womb of Space[v], in which we are immersed – at all times: and Samhain is a good season for feeling it. References: Livingstone, Glenys. Lammas/Late Summer in PaGaian tradition By Glenys Livingstone Ph.D.

This essay is an edited excerpt from Chapter 5 of the author’s book PaGaian Cosmology: Re-inventing Earth-based Goddess Religion. Traditionally the dates for this Seasonal Moment are: Southern Hemisphere – Feb. 1st/2nd Northern Hemisphere – August 1st/2nd however the actual astronomical date varies. See archaeoastronomy.com for the actual moment. Lammas table/altar Lammas, as it is often called[1], is the meridian point of the first dark quarter of the year, between Summer Solstice and Autumn Equinox; it is after the light phase has peaked and is complete, and as such, I choose it as a special celebration of the Crone/Old One. Within the Celtic tradition, it is the wake of Lugh, the Sun King, and it is the Crone that reaps him. But within earlier Goddess traditions, all the transformations were Hers[2]; and the community reflected on the reality that the Mother aspect of the Goddess, having come to fruition, from Lammas on would enter the Earth and slowly become transformed into the Old Woman-Hecate-Cailleach aspect …[3] I dedicate Lammas to the face of the Old One, just as Imbolc, its polar opposite on the Wheel in Old European tradition, is dedicated to the Virgin/Maiden face. The Old One, the Dark and Shining One, has been much maligned, so to celebrate Her can be more of a challenge in our present cultural context. Lammas may be an opportunity to re-aquaint ourselves with the Crone in her purity, to fall in love with Her again. I state the purpose of the seasonal gathering thus: This is the season of the waxing dark. The seed of darkness born at the Summer Solstice now grows … the dark part of the days grows visibly longer. Earth’s tilt is taking us back away from the Sun. This is the time when we celebrate dissolution; each unique self lets go, to the Darkness. It is the time of ending, when the grain, the fruit, is harvested. We meet to remember the Dark Sentience, the All-Nourishing Abyss, She from whom we arise, in whom we are immersed, and to whom we return. This is the time of the Crone, the Wise Dark One, who accepts and receives our harvest, who grinds the grain, who dismantles what has gone before. She is Hecate, Lillith, Medusa, Kali, Erishkagel,Chamunda, Coatlique – Divine Compassionate One, She Who Creates the Space to Be. We meet to accept Her transformative embrace, trusting Her knowing, which is beyond all knowledge. Lammas is the seasonal moment for recognizing that we dissolve into the “night” of the Larger Organism of whom we are part – Gaia. It is She who is immortal, from whom we arise, and into whom we dissolve. This celebration is a development of what was born in the transition of Summer Solstice; the dark sentient Source of Creativity is honoured. The autopoietic space in us recognizes Her, is comforted by Her, desires Her self-transcendence and self-dissolution; Lammas is an opportunity to be with our organism’s love of Larger Self – this Native Place. We have been taught to fear Her, but at this Seasonal Moment we may remember that She is the compassionate One, deeply committed to transformation, which is actually innate to us. Whereas at Imbolc/Early Spring, we shone forth as individual, multiforms of Her; at Lammas, we small individual selves remember that we are She and dissolve back into Her. We are the Promise of Lifeas was affirmed at Imbolc, but we are the Promise of Her- it is not ours to hold. We identify as the sacred Harvest at Lammas; our individual harvest isHer Harvest. We are the process itself – we are Gaia’s Process. Wedo not breathe (though of course we do), we borrow the breath, for a while. It is like a relay: we pick the breath up, create what we do during our time with it, and pass it on. The harvest we reap in our individual lives is important, andit is for us only short term; it belongs to the Cosmos in the long term. Lammas is a time for “making sacred” – as “sacrifice” may be understood; we may “make sacred” ourselves. As Imbolc was a time for dedication, so is Lammas. This is the wisdom of the phase of the Old One. She is the aspect that finds the “yes” to letting go, to loving the Larger Self, beyond all knowledge, and steps into the power of the Abyss; encouraged and nourished by the harvest, She will gradually move into the balance of Autumn Equinox/Mabon, the next Sesaonal Moment on the year’s cycle. The name “Tailtunasad” has been suggested for this Seasonal Moment, by Cheryl Straffon editor of Goddess Alive! I prefer the name of Lammas, although some think it is a Christian term: however some sources say that Lammas means “feast of the bread” which is how I have understood it, and surely such a feast pre-dates Christianity. It is my opinion that the incoming Christians preferred “Lammas” to “Lughnasad”: the term itself is not Christian in origin. The evolution of all these things is complex, and we may evolve them further with our careful thoughts and experience.

(Essay 2) Returning Home with Mago, the Great Goddess, from East Asia by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang

Nonetheless, she remains barely known to the world. Her equals, Xiwangmu (the Supreme Goddess of Daoism) and Amaterasu (the Sun Goddess of the Japanese imperial family), are said to comprise the pantheon of East Asian cosmic goddesses. Considering that these goddesses are often aligned with the ancient culture of China or Japan, one notices that the pantheon of East Asian Great Goddesses thus omits both Mago and “Korean culture.”
(Essay 2) Magoist Cetaceanism and the Myth of the Pacifying Flute (Manpasikjeok) by Helen Hye-Sook Hwang, Ph.D.

Reversing the Reversed of the Buddhist Textual Erasure (Part 1) Dragon Loop and Sound Tube in the Temple Bell of Silla (57 BCE-935 CE) Restored Sillan Temple Bell (8-9th C), excavated in Uncheong-dong, Cheongju Among the many Sillan Magoist Cetacean expressions which stands out is the temple bell, traditionally known as the Whale Bell (鯨鍾 Gyeongjong). The Whale Bell, a signature device of Sillan Magoist Cetaceanism, has two distinctive features, the dragon loop and the sound tube. The dragon loop functions to hang the bell, which occurs in Chinese and Japanese bells as well. This is not to say that the dragon in Chinese and Japanese counterparts are the same as that of the Korean temple bell, a point which was discussed in an earlier part of my essay on the Korean temple bell. However, the sound tube is a feature exclusively present in Korean temple bells, which is, among others, a hallmark of the Korean temple bell, distinguished from its Chinese and Japanese counterparts. Cast adjacent to each other in the bell head, the two are depicted as if the dragon is carrying the sound tube on its back (see the image). By pinpointing the sound tube, a group of Korean scholars (Suyeong Hwang and Donghae Gwak) posit that the sound tube is a replication of the pacifying flute that defeats all (萬波息笛 Manpasikjeok), the seventh century Sillan treasure. Put differently, the Korean temple bell is an innovative remake of the pacifying flute, which is uniquely Sillan. To support their contention, they draw attention to the fact that the sound tube of some Korean temple bells comes in the form of bamboo nodes. Indeed, while most temple bells show the design of nodes etched in the upright pipe, some from the Goryeo period (910-1392) specify the nodes as those of a bamboo tree.[1] Ironically, the bell with the design of bamboo nodes is a whale-effacing variation of earlier Sillan ones with decorative nodes. The Sillan temple bells replicate the bamboo-looking cetacean flute not a bamboo-made flute. This indicates that the Buddhist erasure of Magoist Cetaceanism was gaining hegemony in the Goryeo period. In any case, what does the bamboo-like node design have to do with the pacifying flute? According to the myth of the pacifying flute, the pacifying flute is made from a mysterious bamboo tree grown in a mysteriously floating mountain in the sea. And the dragon loop is no mere functional or decorative design. In the story, the dragon presents the pacifying flute to King Sinmun the Great, the protagonist, with the message that he would be ruling the whole world with the sound. Even if agreeing that the pacifying flute is replicated as the sound tube, there is an enigma yet to be unraveled. How is the sound tube or the pacifying flute related with whales? What is the role of the dragon with regards to whales? Answering these questions requires reinstating the lost name for whales in the myth of the pacifying flute. Temple Bell in the Early Goryeo Period with the sound tube resembling bamboo nodes, Samseon-am in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Temple Bell in the Late Goryeo Period with the sound tube resembling bamboo nodes Truth is that the myth of the pacifying flute written in the Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three States), the 13th century Korean Buddhist text that depicts the mytho-history of Korea ultimately Buddhist, comes to us as an altered story. There involved a Buddhist obfuscation of Magoist Cetaceanism. As background, the Buddhist church could not but embrace folk and Shamanic practices in order to reach out to the populace. It must be said that the Buddhist church did not kill or antagonize Magoist Cetacean folk practices. Although seemingly peaceful, however, Buddhist authority aimed at the goal of a patriarchal religion: To subdue and coopt pre-patriarchal spiritual and folk practices, which is gynocentric and cetacean. The evidence of Magoist Cetaceanism had to be dismantled but not completely destroyed. To subdue the public recognition of Magoist Cetaceanism, Ilyeon, its Buddhist monk author, replaces the whale, a narwhal in particular, with “a moving mountain in the sea” and the tusk of a narwhal with “a bamboo tree growing atop the mountain.” By undoing the linguistic harness, we are able to assess the seventh century Sillan Magoist Cetaceanism. It is possible to reconstruct the cogent Magoist Cetacean story of the pacifying flute. At one point of time before the 13th century when the Samguk Yusa was written, there likely existed an original version of the story, which articulates the narwhal (외뿔고래 Oeppul Gorae or 일각고래 Ilgak Gorae) and its single tusk (Oeppul). If we reverse “a moving mountain” to “a pod of whales” and “the bamboo tree” with “the tusk of a narwhal,” the myth of the pacifying flute would make a perfect sense as follows: (A hypothetically original account of the Manpasikjeok myth) King Sinmun ordered the completion of Gameunsa (Graced Temple) to commemorate his deceased father, King Munmu. The main hall of Gameunsa was designed at the sea level to allow the dragon to enter and stroll through the ebb and flow of the sea waves. In the second year of his reign (682 CE), Marine Officer reported that a pod of whales (a little mountain) in the Sea of Whales (East Sea) was approaching Gameunsa. The king had Solar Officer perform a divination. The divination foretold that he would be given a treasure with which he could protect Wolseong (Moon Stronghold), Silla’s capital. This would be a gift from King Munmu who became a sea dragon and Gim Yusin who became a heavenly being again. In seven days, the king went out to Yigyeondae (Platform of Gaining Vision) and saw the whale (the mountain) floating like a turtle’s head in the sea. There was a bamboo-tree-like tusk (a bamboo tree growing) on its top, which became two during the day and one at night. The king stayed overnight in Gameumsa to listen to the dragon who entered the yard …
(Bell Essay 5) The Ancient Korean Bell and Magoism by Helen Hwang

Part V: The Nine Nipples and Korean Magoist Identity Part V demonstrates the difference in bells of Korea, China, and Japan with regard to the relief of nine nipples. Chinese bells after the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE) got away with the nipples wholesale, whereas Japanese bells inaccurately mimicked nine nipples. On the other hand, the nine nipples continued to be sculpted on Sillan Korean bells and throughout history. In fact, the nine nipples became the hallmark of Korean bells. Why did post-Han China discontinue the nine nipples, a legacy from Shang and Zhou times? What made Japan mimic the nipples on the bell? What does it mean that Korean bells kept the nine nipples intact throughout history? These questions remain unanswered without the framework of the mytho-history of Old Magoism that defines ancient Korea as the creator and defender of Magoism in pre- and proto-Chinese times. The fact that bells with the nine nipples re-emerged during 7th-8th century Silla (57 BCE-935 CE) is no accident. In fact, it supports the premise that Old Magoism during which Magoist female shamans ruled was revived by Sillan leaders. Silla Koreans took the role of witness to the legacy of Old Magoism before it vanished into the subliminal memory of history once and for all. Like other symbols of the number nine such as the nine dragons, nine-tailed fox, and nine maidens that I have shown in a series of preceding essays, the nine nipples are the cultural/conceptual relic from the bygone Magoist history underlying Sinocentric historiography of East Asia. On one level, the relief of nipples forged on the bells from Korea, China, and Japan in one way or another at some point of history substantiates the cultural influence of Old Magoism across the national boundaries of East Asia. On another level, the fact that the nine nipples characterize Korean bells throughout history suggests the primary association of ancient Koreans with Magoism. Korean bells have served the mission of carrying the cultural memory of Old Magoism. Let us backtrack a bit and ask: Is it possible to conclude that the Zhou bell was the original model of the Sillan bell? It is dubious to deem that the Sillan bell took the model of the Zhou bell solely. That is primarily because the Sillan bell is far more explicit than the Zhou bell in female symbology. The Zhou bell’s nipples are not even called nipples. Foremost, official history of ancient China has no explanation for the female principle embodied in the nine nipples of Zhou and Shang bells. It appears that the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE) was the landmark that defined China without regard to its attitude toward Old Magoism. The umbilical cord was not only cut off but also used to matricide, marking the birth of full-fledged patriarchy. The bloody hand was washed in falsified historiography. The Han dynasty marks the period of transition from the pseudo-Magoist to the anti-Magoist for China. In other words, China as a political force began, or rather continued, to abandon the legacy of Old Magoism and forged a new identity of patriarchal rulership in writing. In about four centuries thereafter, we find the bells of the Dang dynasty (618-906) utterly non-traditional in style, showing no sign of female symbology. Bell, Chen Dynasty (575), China Jingyun Bell, Tang Dynasty (711), China Protruded knobs are expressed in Jingyun bell cast in 711 CE but hard to associate them with nipples. The number nine symbology is no longer included. Instead, the magnitude in size and weight (247 cm and 6,500 kg) was there to adumbrate what has gone into oblivion, the magical work of epiphany. Discontinuity between Zhou bells and Dang bells cannot be more overt. As seen in above images, Chinese bells of the post-Dang period are adorned in entirely new styles among which the convoluted end-lines are one of the most distinctive features. Creativity without harmony is no ingenuity but an expression of confusion. Power without harmony is only a disguise of fear and guilt. And harmony comes from the Great Goddess, Mago. The contrast of the Dang bell is heightened when it is juxtaposed with the contemporaneous Sillan counterpart. It is unequivocal that the Sillan Korean bell is closer to the Zhou bell in appearance than the Dang bell to the Zhou bell. Experts may deem this as a corollary that ancient Silla was under the influence of Zhou culture. However, I suggest that both Silla and Zhou took the footstep of the pre-Chinese tradition of Old Magoism. Put differently, there were older models that are not fully exposed at this time. Precisely, Sinocentric thinking is under investigation. On the part of proto-Chinese Korean history, according to mainstream historians, Joseon (2333 BCE-232 BCE) is rendered a myth lacking historicity. Silla not only duly inherited the heritage of Old Magoism but also sought to revive the rule of Old Magoism whose political stance strikingly differed from her contemporaneous neighboring state, Dang China. In fact, the Dang dynasty (618 CE-906 CE) coexisted with the united Silla period (668 CE-936 CE), shorter than the last third of the Silla period (57 BCE-935 CE). What prevents one from thinking that Silla inherited the symbolism of nine nipples directly from pre-Chinese East Asian/Korean Magoist Culture? Interestingly, Japanese bells have nipples whose numbers are, nonetheless, inconsistent, more than nine. While showing no overt symbology of female sexuality, the Japanese bell displays the nipples in the four corners aligning with its predecessors. In comparison with Korean bells, nonetheless, they are evidently monotonous in artistry. Absent are the breast circumferences as well as the seats for nipples. Neither goddess images nor intricately designed rinceau designs are employed. However, a hue of mimicry is echoing. The lack of originality in Japanese bells seemed plainly noticed by the Japanese themselves upon encountering Korean bells. More than fifty Korean bells were taken to Japan during the colonial period (1910-1945) and even before then and still remain there. Among them, six bells are known from Silla, cast before the 10th century CE. In fact, the bell in Unjuji, Japan, is alleged …
